The address:

Alexander Garden - Moscow, Alexander Garden

Subway station:

Alexander Garden, Borovitskaya, Library. Lenin

How to get there:

In the very center of the capital, next to there is a small piece of paradise, a park of incredible beauty - the Alexander Garden. In this place you can enjoy the magnificence of well-groomed trees, shrubs and lawns, admire the quaint fountains, feel the delicate aroma of fresh grass and flowers.

The harmonious interweaving of ancient history and nature, majestic architecture and soulful atmosphere - all this attracts to the Alexander Garden and always fascinates visitors.

The Alexander Garden is located behind the Iversky Gates on the slopes of Borovitsky Hill and stretches along the western Kremlin wall: from Revolution Square to the Kremlin Embankment.

Once upon a time, a river flowed here, from the side of Red Square - a moat was equipped that connected the Neglinnaya with the Moscow River. Thus, the Kremlin was surrounded on all sides by water, which turned it into an impregnable fortress for enemies.

But over time, the coast of the river began to collapse, overgrown with plants, on the banks of the Neglinnaya they began to build household buildings - all this significantly spoiled the view. After the end of the Patriotic War of 1812, when the restoration of Moscow began after a fire, Emperor Alexander I decided to fill up the ditch, enclose the Neglinnaya River under the ground, and plant gardens in the resulting place.

Initially, the park was called the Kremlin Gardens, and only after the coronation of Emperor Alexander II (1856) did it begin to be called the Alexander Gardens. At the same time, they used to say exactly “gardens”, and not “garden”. The fact is that the Alexander Garden itself is three gardens conceived in a single landscape style.

upper garden, 350 m long, opened in 1821 (stretches from the Revolution Square to the Trinity Gates).

Middle garden, which was opened in 1822, has a length of about 382 m and runs from Troitsky to Borovitsky Gates.

The shortest garden is the Nizhny (132 m), opened in 1823 and stretches from the Borovitsky Gates to the Kremlin embankment.

In the Lower Garden there are no walking alleys, in the Upper and Middle Gardens there are three alleys, which stretch parallel to Manezhnaya Square and the Kremlin wall. Between them, a large number of trees and ornamental shrubs are planted on lawns, and numerous flowers delight visitors in well-groomed flower beds from spring to autumn.

During the restoration of Manezhnaya Square in 1996, an artificial reservoir with sculptures and fountains was erected along the fence of the Upper Garden, which imitates the bed of the Neglinnaya River.

The main fountain of the artificial reservoir is the Geyser. It got its name from the jets that shoot up like geysers.

Four bronze horses placed on the same reservoir are called "Four Seasons".

In the artificial channel of the Neglinnaya River there are also sculptures of various fairy tale characters: from a sleeping mermaid to Ivan Tsarevich with a frog.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

In 1967, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the victory over Nazi troops near Moscow, an architectural memorial ensemble, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, was created on the territory of the Upper Garden. The remains of unknown Red Army soldiers who died the death of the brave in 1941 in the Battle of Moscow were reburied here.

A bronze composition was installed on the tombstone, which consists of a soldier's helmet, a laurel branch and a battle banner.

In the very center of the memorial there is a niche made of labradorite, on which the inscription is engraved: "Your name is unknown, your feat is immortal."

To the left of the grave there is a wall made of Shoshka crimson quartzite with the inscription: "1941 To those who fell for the Motherland 1945".

On the right side of the grave there is a granite alley with separate blocks made of dark red porphyry. On each of the blocks there is the name of the hero's city, a chased image of the "Golden Star", and inside the blocks there are capsules with the land of hero cities.

Near the memorial is burning "Eternal Flame", which was delivered from the Field of Mars from Leningrad.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War, a monument to Marshal of the Soviet Union Georgy Zhukov was erected opposite the entrance gate of the garden.

To date, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a traditional place for visiting tourists and newlyweds.

One of the attractions of the park, which is reminiscent of the military triumph, is the massive cast-iron gate through which you can get to the Alexander Garden from the side of the Historical Museum.

Grotto "Ruins"

In 1841, at the very base of the Middle Arsenal Tower, in the center of the Upper Garden, the ruins grotto was erected (the author of the project is O.I. Bove) - a semicircular arch made of black granite and red brick, inside - a marble gate with four massive columns .

When designing the grotto, Beauvais used the fragments of Moscow houses destroyed by the French army as a building material, as well as a large number of stone cores that lay in the Kremlin and in the old days were used instead of cast-iron cores.

In the southern part of the Grotto "Ruins" there is a staircase that leads to a platform with sculptures of two lions.

Monument-obelisk

In 1913, in memory of the 300th anniversary of the Romanovs' reign, a monument-obelisk was erected near the main entrance to the garden.

The four-sided obelisk pointed at the top was crowned with a double-headed eagle, below - a lion with a sword and shield, then the coat of arms of the Romanovs, the names of the Romanovs, the coats of arms of the principalities and provinces of the Russian Empire.

At the end of the October Revolution, it was decided not to demolish the obelisk, but on the initiative of V.I. Completely remake Lenin: remove the symbols of the tsar, and replace the names of the Romanovs with the names of prominent socialist thinkers and revolutionaries.

Thus, the coat of arms of the Romanovs and the coats of arms of the provinces of the country were replaced by a ball, and the obelisk was decorated with a relief ornament with the inscriptions: “Proletarians of all countries, unite” and “RSFSR” and was called the Obelisk “To Fighters-Thinkers”.

In 1966, the obelisk was moved to the central part of the Upper Garden next to the Ruins grotto.

After restoration in 2013, the obelisk appeared before Muscovites in its original form.

Monument to Patriarch Hermogenes

The monument to Patriarch Hermogenes is a bronze sculpture on a massive marble pedestal, erected in May 2013 in memory of Patriarch Hermogenes, whose role in the history of Russia during the Time of Troubles is close in importance to the roles of Minin and Pozharsky.

On two sides of the pedestal there are bronze bas-reliefs, which depict: the scene of the election of M. Romanov as the king of Russia; the scene of the expulsion of the boyars by Patriarch Hermogenes, who asked him for blessings to become subjects of Vladislav, the Polish prince.

Behind the monument, on a separate pedestal, there is an inscription that tells about the history of the creation of the sculpture.

Kutafya Tower

The only surviving archer tower of the Moscow Kremlin is, which is located in front of the Trinity Bridge, opposite the Trinity Tower. The height of the Kutafya tower is only 13.5 m. The tower was erected in 1516.

Low, surrounded by the Neglinnaya River and a moat, with the only gate that was closed by a drawbridge in case of danger, the tower was a formidable obstacle for those who besieged the fortress. Slots for lifting mechanisms can still be found at the tower gates.

The Kutafya tower got its current appearance at the end of the 17th century, when it was decided to decorate it with an openwork crown with separate white stone details.

At the moment, the Alexander Garden is one of the most favorite places of rest for Muscovites and guests of the capital.

1826 - 1829,

Architect A. Menelas,

Garden masters: F. Wendelsdorf, A. Gombel, N. Rodionov, P. Erler.

The palace and park ensemble "Alexandria" - a place of permanent summer vacation for four generations of the Romanov dynasty - adjoins the eastern border of the official imperial residence, separated by a wall from the Lower Park.

The history of this place could have been completely different if A.D. In 1725, Menshikov, who owned this site, managed to build here the grandiose country palace "Montcourage" - "My Courage". However, soon the governor-general of St. Petersburg fell into disgrace, his possessions were confiscated, and the palace remained unfinished. Courage came to naught, but the Empress Anna Ioannovna subsequently opened here the Tsar's hunting park - Yardgarten.

A new page in the history of the future "Alexandria" began in the second quarter of the 19th century. In May 1826, Emperor Nicholas I ordered the construction of a dacha on these lands - "... a rural house or, so-called" cat "... with the addition of a park", entrusting all the design and construction work to Adam Menelas, an architect with Scottish roots. Menelas built the "Cottage" palace in the neo-Gothic style fashionable at that time, erected utility buildings, laid out a landscape park with an area of 115 hectares. With the participation of garden masters F. Wendelsdorf, N. Rodionov and A. Gombel, he managed to create one of the most interesting and original landscape parks of Russian romanticism of the second quarter of the 19th century on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. The romantic spirit of the place was especially emphasized by numerous neo-Gothic architectural structures: guardhouses, cast-iron wells, the Ruin Bridge thrown over a deep ravine, near which at that time the remains of the failed Montcourage Palace could still be found. The park was decorated with gazebos, pergolas, garden benches. A stone sofa, carved in a huge boulder, has survived to this day.

The architectural activity of Adam Menelas was continued by A.I. Stackenschneider. For 22 years, he rebuilt the farm created by a Scottish master with a pavilion "in rural taste" and a roof painted like straw, finally turning it into the Farm Palace of Emperor Alexander II. The name of Stackenschneider is associated with the appearance in "Alexandria" of the New Farm, the building of the Palace Telegraph Station and the Konstantinovsky (Admiral's) House, intended for the residence of the second son of Emperor Nicholas I and Alexandra Feodorovna - Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich. Near the Farm Palace is built by E.L. Ghanom house for the courier.

For many years the garden master P.I. Erler, whose grave since the 70s of the XX century has been located next to the Gothic Chapel - the home church of the imperial family, built according to the project of K. Schinkel in the neo-Gothic style and which has become one of the most original and beautiful buildings of "Alexandria".

Restrained and kind, Empress Alexandra Feodorovna created in "Alexandria" a special world of love, family warmth and comfort, which was highly appreciated by the royal heirs: her son - Emperor Alexander II and grandson - Emperor Alexander III, who spent every summer with his family in the "Cottage". And for the great-grandson of Alexandra Feodorovna - Emperor Nicholas II - on the shore of the bay, at the very edge of the water, the architect A.O. Tomishko built the Lower Palace, which, unfortunately, has not survived to this day.

Dacha "Alexandria" was created by Nicholas I as a place for family recreation. In imperial families, children were surrounded by special care. For their education, upbringing and leisure in "Alexandria" a variety of children's facilities were created, for example, a sports ground on the south side of the "Cottage", which was recreated according to the drawings of L.I. Linden, the gymnastics teacher of the Emperor's children. And next to the Farm Palace, a children's Fortress with a rampart, specially built according to the laws of fortification of that time, and a children's Fire Tower were recreated. Unfortunately, the Children's Village House, the Dovecote, the Children's Farm on the shore of the bay and the Water Mill, located east of the Farm Palace on the stream, have not been preserved.

The modern park "Alexandria" is a great place for a family holiday. Children together with their parents can visit the gymnastic ground of the Grand Dukes, take part in the Knights' Festival, become participants in interactive programs, historical reenactments, ring the bell on the children's Fire Tower or just take a walk in one of the most beautiful suburban parks in our country.

KP "Alexandria Park" is being built on the territory of the village of Skotnoye, 10 km from the ring road. The village is run by R5 Group.

In the first phase of the village, 38 plots are being sold, in the second - 48, in the third - 40 plots. In this part of the CP, electricity is provided at the rate of 15 kW per allotment, water supply from the central well through the winter water supply, main gas. Plots have a size of 6-12 acres, in total there are 126 of them in the KP. You can buy both a simple plot and a plot with a house or a contract for its construction. The developer offers houses made of aerated concrete and frame type, lined with bricks. The developer promises to organize children's and sports grounds, guard the fenced area. Roads to each section were built and covered with asphalt crumbs in the village, technical specifications for all communications were obtained, a well was organized, water supply was laid, as well as poles with electricity metering units, main gas was installed. Functioning street lighting. It is planned to organize the operation of the operation service in the KP.

The road to the village by car from the ring road will take about 10 minutes, you have to drive 10 km along the A-121 Sortavala highway. There is a bus from St. Petersburg to the village of Skotnoye, from the bus stop to the checkpoint you need to walk 1.2 km on foot.

The settlement arose to the north-west of the Volchya River and a large forest behind it. The highway is 300 meters away and is separated from the CP by a narrow forest belt.

The nearest infrastructure facilities are located in the village of Skotnoe: cafes, shops, children's and football grounds, private farms. On the outskirts of the city there are Mega Parnassus, Auchan, Ikea, Ob, and the Grand Canyon shopping mall. A fitness club, a bakery and other infrastructure facilities have been designed in the neighboring large residential complex. Schools and kindergartens are operating in the settlements of Vartemyagi and Agalatovo, and a hospital is being built. Nearby there is a bison-bison nursery, the ski resort "Eagle Mountain".

Opinion (May 2019):

The village is gradually developing, quite a lot of houses have already been built here, and in the first stages, the "Alexandria Park" looks quite habitable. Intra-settlement roads are made and periodically repaired, the territory is illuminated, video surveillance cameras are installed, the Internet is connected to the village via fiber optic cable. A fence is being installed around the entire perimeter of the village. The process of water supply and electrification of the fourth stage of the village continues. According to the developer, work is also underway on gas supply, however, no real achievements in this matter are reported either on the site of the village or on other official sites.

The location of KP "Alexandria Park" has a number of advantages, which we have already written about. It is quite suitable for permanent residence. The cottages that have already been built here look solid, it is clear that people consider the village precisely as a place to live all year round, and not for summer vacations.

Sales don't stop there. If at the end of October 2017 about 60 plots were sold and booked, then by May 2019 over 100 lots were sold. It turns out that an average of three land plots are sold per month. Pretty good for the current difficult market situation. There is still a choice at the moment, but it is no longer great. 24 sites remain free.

Among the nearest cottage settlements, both more affordable and comparable in price options are presented: settlements, and more expensive ones - KP, etc.

Opinion, October 2017:

A good place was chosen for the village. It's beautiful here, hilly terrain, copses. This is already a lot. I really want to live here. Another important plus is that it is not far to go to St. Petersburg. There is an interchange of the Sortavala highway nearby, there are usually no traffic jams on this wide highway, so getting to the city and back will not be a problem. We also note that Kavgolovskoye Lake is relatively close: if you have a car in the summer, you will have somewhere to go to swim and sunbathe. There are also places for active recreation nearby. In all senses "Alexandria Park" Pretty good option for both permanent residence and holiday home. At the same time, the price of a hundred square meters is quite democratic.

The risks of the project, in our opinion, can only be associated with the developer's lack of experience. Company R5 Group young and in the market to prove itself has not really had time. She implemented her earlier project, the village of Solnechnaya Dolina, nearby, also in the location of Animal. However, buyers of plots had questions about it there: on the access road to the village, on the quality of water from the central well, on the timing of connecting gas. It is impossible to exclude the possibility that similar issues may arise in the "Alexandria Park". However, so far the intensity of passions that the forum of the "Solnechnaya Dolina" breathes is not observed here. At present, a well for water supply is ready in the village, there is electricity, lighting has been done in some places, internal roads are being made, the owners are building houses, several cottages have already been built. It is partly alarming that the developer does not post any documents related to land, communications, etc. on the official website of the village.

Sales in the "Alexandria Park" are very active. Apart from the reserved plots, there are almost no free land plots left in the first stage, and about a dozen of them in the second. The largest number of options are available in the third stage of the village, where so far only individual plots have been sold. Alternative proposals are presented in the nearby village of the PetroStil company, as well as in the villages of the Lenobeko company and from the Shtab company. In addition, a little further along the Novopriozerskoe highway, there are plots for sale in another R5 Group project - a village.

The information provided on the site, including prices, layouts, contact details of developers, etc., is taken from open sources (usually developers' websites), is for informational purposes and is changed (updated) upon request from developers' representatives. For up-to-date information, contact the developer's sales department.

Stage 1 of construction: 1829 - 1831, architect A. Menelas,

Stage 2 of construction: 1838 - 1860, architect A. I. Stackenschneider.

After the palace "Cottage" was built, the family of Emperor Nicholas I traditionally spent the summer months in "Alexandria". To further emphasize the idyllic nature of the country residence, by decree of the emperor in 1831, the main creator of the palace and park ensemble, architect A. Menelas, built a farm with a cowshed, rooms for shepherds, kitchens and pantries. Especially from England, thoroughbred cows were discharged for her, which provided the family with dairy products, and even the shepherd is an Englishman. It was a modest rural house with a straw-colored roof and surrounded by galleries on pillars in the form of birch trunks. At the end of the 1930s, a two-story extension was added to the farm pavilion, which housed the living rooms of the heir to the throne, the future Emperor Alexander II.

Over the next two decades, the building was repeatedly rebuilt under the guidance of architect A.I. Stackenschneider. The first perestroika was associated with the marriage in 1841 of Tsarevich Alexander to the Hesse-Darmstadt princess, in Orthodoxy - Maria Alexandrovna. Subsequently, the building was expanded in connection with the birth of children and the growth of the family. During the reconstruction, the barn was transferred to a new building near the Peterhof road. With the accession of Alexander Nikolaevich to the throne, the status of the dacha changed, and by 1860 the modest farm turned into the Farm Palace of Emperor Alexander II.

The decoration of the interiors of the Farm Palace, as well as all the buildings on the territory of the park "Alexandria", is made in the neo-Gothic style. Inside, elements of the original decoration have been preserved - stucco, fragments of wall and ceiling paintings, fragments of oak parquet, stoves, fireplaces and stairs. The building was equipped with all amenities necessary for living. An elevator, plumbing, toilets and bathrooms were arranged here. A marble bath in Maria Alexandrovna's Dressing Room has been preserved to this day. On the half that belonged to the Empress, the rooms are distinguished by elegance and comfort. In some rooms, Gothic elements in decoration are combined with furniture in the second rococo style.

The most significant interior detail of the Farm Palace is the Blue Cabinet of Alexander II. Here the emperor received ministers, heard reports on the course of hostilities, and held meetings of committees to reform the country. It was here that the most important bill on the liberation of peasants from serfdom was being prepared.

The Blue Cabinet contains memorial items that belonged to the emperor: a leather briefcase for documents, a cooking station, an ivory crucifix. Armchairs from the original furniture and unique clocks with many dials have been preserved. They showed the time in 66 provincial cities of Russia and Alaska. A leather pillow with traces of blood, which was in the emperor's carriage on March 1, 1881, recalls his tragic death.

Many rooms of the Farm Palace have access to the terraces or the garden. In front of the eastern facade of the palace, according to the project of the architect E. Gan, the Empress's Own Garden was arranged, surrounded on three sides by a pergola. The fountain in the oval pool is decorated with a bronze sculpture "Night", cast from a marble original by the French sculptor Joseph Pollet.

On the territory of the Farm Palace, to the south of it, the building of the Kitchen Building has been preserved. Of the various buildings erected for children (Children's farm with a garden, Children's rural house, a small mill), now, from the western facade, a children's Fire tower with a bell and a set of tools has been recreated.

The Farm Palace is interesting not only for its unusual history. This is the only palace in Russia built specifically for Alexander II. For half a century, since childhood, his life has been connected with this unique building, which changed with the owner.

For the first time since 1932, the exposition of the Farm Palace as a museum was opened after restoration on June 19, 2010.

When you visit castles, country estates or city residences of rulers or just famous people, for some reason you perceive them only as museums that you must visit, but not as human housing in which people lived, worked, loved, raised children, suffered , rejoiced ... Maybe because over the decades and even centuries of absence of the owners, the spirit of the house has weathered, or numerous destructions and subsequent restorations have forever changed the building, made it non-residential? It is a completely different matter in Alexandria Park, which is part of the famous palace and park ensemble Peterhof (Petrodvorets) in the Leningrad Region.

Initially, Peter I allocated these lands for dachas to his subjects, the owners changed over the years, Alexander Menshikov was among them, then they passed to the princes Dolgoruky, after the Empress Anna Ioannovna arranged a hunting park here. And only in 1825, Emperor Nicholas I became the owner, who presented these possessions to his wife Alexandra Feodorovna (nee Prussian princess Friederike-Louise-Charlotte-Wilhelmina) and the estate was named "Alexandria" in her honor. At that time, we could hardly visit these places freely - the personal property of the imperial family was vigilantly guarded by the Cossacks and the police.

Alexandria Park was laid out in 1826, but work continued over the years. The park gradually acquired its own special features, it seemed that romantic, cozy corners formed by themselves, paths were laid, bridges were built ... At the same time, under the guidance of architect Adam Menelas, the construction of a country house or cottage began. For three years the Palace-cottage in the Gothic style was built. Nicholas I, the son of the emperor-knight Paul I, was also brought up in the romantic traditions of chivalry. Despite the love affairs, the lady of his heart has always been the "White Rose", as Princess Charlotte was called. As a tribute to knightly traditions, the facades of the Palace Cottage are decorated with the coat of arms of Alexandria - a shield with a sword surrounded by a wreath of white roses, a symbol invented by the poet V.A. Zhukovsky, teacher of the Russian language of the Empress and educator of the heirs.

Located on two terraces - the coastal one, which borders the Gulf of Finland and the upper one, on which the main buildings are located, the park occupies about 115 hectares. From west to east, straight as an arrow, the park is pierced by Nikolskaya alley. This is perhaps the only straight road in Alexandria, all other alleys, paths and paths twist, bend, intertwine with each other, creating a bizarre network in such a way that the landscape is viewed most effectively from different points. Thanks to the work of the wonderful garden master P.I. Erler, we can still admire a beautiful landscape park in which groups of trees (mainly familiar to Russia - birch, oak, linden, maple, ash, poplar) alternate with cozy meadows and lawns. Rare exotic trees and shrubs have also been preserved here. A deep natural ravine is skillfully inscribed in the landscape, in which a waterfall was made with the help of a dam. A pond dug in front of the northern facade of the house was connected to the general water system of the park. The romantic character of the park was also given by small architectural forms - gazebos, garden sculptures and pavilions, in which the Gothic style was also visible. One of the interesting architectural finds of A. Menelas was a bridge built of roughly hewn stone slabs and granite boulders with a railing of birch trunks. The bridge, called Ruinny, since the ruins of the Menshikov Palace "Montcourage" were nearby, ironically after the war of 1941-1945. he himself was in ruins.

Passing the Ruined Bridge, we will see the Farm Palace. Initially, it was a real farm with cows, then the building was completed, remodeled and eventually turned into a real two-story palace, which became the summer residence of the next emperor, Alexander II. There is evidence that it was in the Farm Palace that the emperor conceived a decree on the abolition of serfdom. The farm itself was transferred to a house specially built near the southern border of Alexandria, which is called the New Farm.

One of the pearls of Alexandria is the summer house church of the royal family, consecrated in honor of Alexander Nevsky. Many details of this building were made of cast iron, the statues of saints were made of copper. The windows were decorated with stained-glass windows. The elements of Gothic architecture are most clearly expressed in the church building, which may be why it is better known as the Gothic Chapel.

Between the Farm Palace and the Gothic Chapel is a majestic stone. The inscription says that this is a tombstone of Pyotr Ivanovich Erler, a master gardener who took part in the creation of many parks, contributed to the compilation of the "Practical Manual for the Garden Team", which at that time was actively used by many professional gardeners. Initially, P.I. Erler was buried at the Holy Trinity Cemetery, but in 1970 his ashes were transferred to the territory of Alexandria. Not far from the Farm Palace there is another monument - a granite obelisk, erected in 1932. This is a kind of tribute to all known and unknown people who participated in the creation of parks and palaces of Peterhof. The inscription on the marble plaque reads: "To working people - the builders of Peterhof." Probably, this monument rightfully belongs to the modern servants of the Peterhof museum complex, to all workers, agronomists, architects, caretakers ...

A later building is the so-called Lower Dacha or Lower Palace, located at the northern border of Alexandria, on the very shore of the Gulf of Finland. It all started with the construction of the pavilion of "Italian architecture" for Emperor Alexander III, then, at the behest of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II, the pavilion turned into a four-story palace in the Italian style. It was here, on August 12, 1904, that the heir to the throne, Tsarevich Alexei, was born. In Alexandria Park, he had his own small field, where he sowed rye and harvested it himself with a sickle. Fulfilling his testament: “When I die, put a small monument to me in the park,” a sculpture of a youth in a sailor suit was placed near the Cottage Palace. Unfortunately, only the ruins of the Lower Dacha have survived to this day.

Numerous visitors to the park and its buildings note that, unlike the grand palaces and regular parks nearby, the quiet, almost reserved corner of Alexandria leaves a feeling of presence ... Whom? Probably former owners, members of the Romanov royal family, Russian autocrats. It seems that someone has just left the office, that the voices of playing children are still heard in the park, and unfinished embroidery will wait for its mistress.
