German license plate index. Car numbers, German license plates What German numbers look like on cars
An exclusive license plate is a way for drivers to express themselves. However, some combinations of numbers and letters are prohibited in Germany. What are these combinations and why are they not allowed?
The date of birth of a child or the abbreviation of the place where the meeting with love took place - often motorists use a license plate to leave a memorable message about the event. In this case, you should be aware that not all combinations of numbers and letters in the license plate are allowed. For example, in Germany you will never be given a license plate with the letters "HJ".
These license plates are prohibited in Germany
The grounds for the prohibition of certain license plates are specified in paragraph 8 of section 1 of the Vehicle Registration Regulations (FZV). It states: "The combination of an identification number, as well as the combination of a geographic code and an identification number, must not violate integrity."
Regardless of the federal state, in Germany you will never see vehicle with a license plate beginning with "HJ", "KZ", "SA", and "SS". The reason is simple: these combinations of letters stand for the concept of National Socialism.
"HJ"– Hitlerjugen: youth organization of the National Socialist Party (NSDAP), which was formed in 1926 under the name of the German Working Youth Union (HJ, Bund deutscher Arbeiterjugend). It was used by the Nazis for the ideological and military education of young people.
KZ– Toonzentrationslager(concentration camp): At the initiative of the National Socialist leadership of the Third Reich (1933-1945), hundreds of thousands of people were killed in concentration camps.
SA– Sturmabteilung(assault troops): during the National Socialist Third Reich (1933-1945) they played a decisive role in the Holocaust.
"SS" – Schutzstaffel(security detachments): military organization of the National Socialist Party (1920-1945).

Font
Since November 2000, registration plates have been using a special typeface developed in Germany by Karlgeorg Höfer (Ger. Karlgeorg Hoefer) back in the 70s of the XX century by order of the government. The reason for the creation was the relative ease of counterfeiting license plates using the old font. For example, P could easily be corrected R, B- per number 8 or 3 , a O- on the Q and vice versa.
The uniqueness of the new font (the name is often used FE script) lies in the fact that letters similar in configuration and spelling are almost impossible to “interrupt”. Thus the letter O extremely difficult to convert into a letter Q, from P get R, and from L and F - E and vice versa. The same is true with numbers.
This typeface was called "hard to falsify" (it. Falschungserschwernde Schrift ).
Issuance of registration plates
In each district of the federal state there is a special department that deals with the issuance of registration plates - German. Zulassungsstelle or him. Kfz-Zulassungsbehorde, which literally means "the agency for the admission of the vehicle to operation."
Before obtaining license plates, the car owner must insure the car. After insurance, a person is given a special code (German. Versicherungsbestätigungsnummer ), with which you need to contact the district office ( Zulassungsstelle), fill out an application and make payment. After that, the department provides a special paper on which the alphanumeric combination of the future license plate is written. Next, the motorist goes to a special shop located next to the building of the department (and sometimes in the same building), where registration plates are made. After payment, the vehicle owner receives his license plates and must go with them back to the district office, where the last stage of obtaining "numbers" is carried out - a sticker of the federal land district is installed and the entire package of documents is issued.
Insurance numbers
Insurance license plates.
Insurance numbers (German) Versicherungskennzeichen) are issued by an insurance company and are installed on mopeds and other low-powered vehicles (also on vehicles with a maximum speed of 25 km/h used by people with disabilities). These license plates are smaller than regular registration plates and are only valid for one year from the beginning of March to the end of February of the following year. These marks have been replacing official registration marks since low-powered vehicles began to be registered through insurance companies. 4 colors are used for license plates: red (used very rarely and for temporary use of the vehicle), black, green, blue. The last three colors alternate every year, which allows you to track whether this vehicle is insured and whether it has an up-to-date license plate. In addition, the year is "printed" on the bottom line of the sign. It is not possible to use a license plate of the same color every three years as the police check if that particular alphanumeric combination is valid. The format is as follows: three numbers at the top, three letters at the bottom of the license plate. Numbers and digits are chosen randomly, and personal numbers impossible.
Each year has its own license plate color.
Stickers
Emission test sticker. 2007
Vehicle security check sticker. 2007
Emission Test Sticker was installed (cancelled since January 2010) on the front license plate, and vehicle safety sticker installed on the rear license plate and since 2010 combines the functions of both stickers. The year is in the center of the sticker. The black marks next to the number 12 allow officers to identify from a distance when a particular test has been passed. These stickers are installed on the license plate in a special way - the stickers rotate. If you imagine a clock display, then the stickers are rotated so that the number 12 coincides with the desired number on an imaginary clock face. The numbers on the imaginary dial indicate the numerical equivalent of the months.
Below the vehicle safety stickers and the toxicity test stickers on the license plate, there is a sign of the federal state, and this sign also indicates the name of the region of this federal state in which the car is registered.
Stickers are made and installed on license plates in a special way, which does not allow them to be removed without damaging the license plate.
If it becomes known that the car owner has not paid the insurance premium for more than three months, the police will remove the federal land sign with a special device, thereby damaging the license plates. This will make the use of numbers illegal and the car owner will have to wait for the insurance company to provide new license plates.
The sticker colors are repeated every six years.

German license plates are a very capacious and interesting topic. By and large
account, we are talking about a whole system of registration and control of the use
vehicles (hereinafter referred to as the "TC"). The very first car numbers
appeared in Berlin in 1892, and in 1906 the
All-German license plate system. Currently in use
format adopted in 1994; the left side of the license plate is occupied by blue
rectangle with the symbol of the European Union, below it in white
the letter D (Deutschland) is applied, followed by an alphabetic code or prefix,
containing from one to three characters, depending on the population
point and location. The following rule applies:
the larger the city, the fewer letters - so, a one-letter prefix
assigned in the most big cities Germany(B - Berlin, K - Cologne, M
- Munich, F - Frankfurt am Main). But to designate the cities of Eastern
Germany more often uses several letters, because after the unification
countries in 1990, short letter combinations were already used in
cities of West Germany. Here is a small example: in Düsseldorf
single-letter prefix "D", and in Dresden - "DD", in addition, in the eastern
areas have fewer registered cars, and this allows
use three letter codes. There are a few other exceptions -
letter combinations in the codes of the former Hanseatic cities, in their prefixes on
The letter "N" is in the first place. In Hamburg numbers, the code combination
"NN" (Hansestadt Hamburg), and in Rostock - "HRO".
After the prefix of the code of the city or region of the federal state, there are
emission test sticker and test sticker
safety of a car or other vehicle, after them there is another
letter code and number combination. No more on the license plate
eight letters and numbers.
If the area of the federal state does not change during the sale of the vehicle, then the numbers may remain the same.
Car owners have the opportunity to install on their vehicles
personal license plates, which are reflected as the name
cities, and own initials with the year of birth, but only in
if the selected code has nothing to do with "forbidden
letter combinations. Most of the forbidden letter combinations are associated with
period of Nazism German history(SS, SA, HJ, NS, KZ), so on
license plates in Saxony-Anhalt adopted the prefix "LSA" (Land
Sachsen Anhalt). In addition, combinations are strongly discouraged,
which denote obscene expressions.
For special seasonal license plates, the last two digits of the combination
indicate the period during which the vehicle is considered
registered, the upper digit indicates the month in which such
period, and the last - the month of its end.
Short-term license plates are provided for unregistered vehicles,
which are valid for five days, their digital code begins with "04".
On the right side of the license plate there is a yellow stripe, which indicates
end date of the number.
When a car is taken out of the country, special signs are issued for
exported cars whose owners are not citizens
Germany. On the left side of such signs there is no blue field with the image
symbol of the EU, instead of it there is a red bar with the expiration date
insurance contract.
They have their own characteristics and car numbers of persons with a diplomatic
immunity. Instead of a prefix, a number is shown on the license plate
"0", and for the cars of representatives of the highest echelon of power, the following
designations: "0-1" - for the TS of Presidents, "0-2" - for prime ministers, "0-3"
- ministers of foreign affairs, "1-1" - chairmen of parliaments.
Vehicles armed forces have numbers on which instead of
blue stripe with the EU symbol, the national flag of Germany is depicted, and
the code starts with the letter "Y" followed by a six-digit
a combination of numbers or a five-digit number when it comes to motorcycles. At the machines
assigned to NATO units located in Germany,
similar license plates, only the code starts with "X" and the number
four-digit, for example: X-2345.
Not everyone knows that for thirty-year-old collectible cars
also have their own, "special" numbers, their digital combination
starts with "07". In addition, the collector must have
a special certificate confirming that the cars do not have a criminal
history, and all components are original and in working order.
It is allowed to have one set of signs for the entire collection, but in this
In this case, the collector must clearly record all operations with numbers.
In the 70s of the last century, by order of the German government, Karlgeorg Höfer
(Karlgeorg Hoefer) developed a unique font, which later received
the name "hindering falsification" (Fälschungserschwerende Schrift).
This font has only been used for license plates since November 2000.
Its feature is the impossibility of changing the code, since each
the sign has almost no common elements with other signs, and "interrupt" P into
R or F to E is extremely difficult.
