It is here that Evia is connected to the mainland by 2 bridges. The Old Euripus Bridge, only 14 meters long, is located right in the center of Chalkis over the Euripus Strait, famous throughout the world due to the peculiarities of the tidal phenomenon - the current changes its direction every 6 hours. The new bridge, 600 meters long, is designed only for vehicles.

The ancient quarter of Castro, located on the hillsides facing the coast, retains traces of Venetian and Turkish development. The quarter is inhabited by Turks who came here in the 1980s. from Thrace, where the oldest Greek Jewish community is also located. In this quarter it is worth seeing the 19th century synagogue and the 15th century Emir-Zadeh Mosque. with a marble fountain, as well as the Church of Agia Paraskevi, a huge 13th-century basilica, of which there are few in mainland Greece. The interior of the church is a mixture of different styles and centuries-old layers.

Northern Euboea, surrounded by beautiful beaches, breathes tranquility and tranquility, and the incomparable sunsets further emphasize the island character of this beautiful place. Pine trees abound on both the sandy and rocky shores, creating a swirl of breathtaking views, turning this part of the island into a magnificent creation of the divine universe. It is here, 172 km from Chalkida, that the resort town of Edipsos (Edeps) is located - one of the largest resorts with hot mineral springs in Greece. In Greek myths, the waters of the spring were used by Hercules to restore strength. In the Roman era, the general Sulla, and then the emperors, came here to be treated for gout. The ruins of the Baths of Sulla with arches have survived to this day. Today, on the territory with radon springs, there is a unique Thermae Sylla Spa complex.

The Elimnion region combines the beauty of the mountains with the beauty of the sea, being one of the favorite destinations in Euboea.

The mythical city of Elimnion, modern Limni, was the place where Zeus and Hera were married. This city has seen invaders, pirates and fought bravely during the Rebellion of 1821 and World War II. The impressive town has a rich island flavor with its traditional cafes, places to sip a glass of ouzo, picturesque streets and courtyards full of flowers. Limni is one of the most colorful settlements of Euboea, which retains the character of an island town.

There are many historical sites in the Elimnion region. The town of Kekhries, where there is a source from which, according to legend, Erotokritos once drank water, mountain Kurkuli, where the very ancient church of St. Paraskeviya is located, the village of Skepasti, which is proud of the skillful iconostasis of the church of St. Nicholas, the creation of Epirus woodcarvers 1860 year, the town of Daphne, which invites guests to admire the picturesque ancient church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul. And finally, the village of Rovies, on the site of which the ancient city of Orovia once existed, which was destroyed, according to the historian Thucydides, in 426 BC. during a strong earthquake.

All along the azure lacy bays that start at the foot of Candilia and reach the olive groves of Rovies, you can try all kinds of water sports. Diving, surfing, water skiing, spear fishing, swimming, kayaking, rowing, fishing and sailing are just a few of the activities offered along the coasts.

22 km southeast of the capital is the city of Eretria, which will appeal to history buffs and not only. The city has quite well preserved ruins of the agora, temples, an ancient theater, where echoes of ancient theatrical performances can still be heard, a sanctuary to the god of wine and feasts Dionysus, a Gymnasium, sections of the walls of the Acropolis and the pediment of the temple of Apollo Daphnophorus (Laurel-bearing). The city's archaeological museum displays many exhibits that bring to life the everyday life of the golden era, and a collection of amazing Eretrian vases.

Ferries arrive at the port of Eretria from Oropa in Attica.

Not far from the port there is a small island connected to Evia by a small road bridge - Dream Island.

70 km southeast of Chalkis is the city of Kymi. Local merchants at one time controlled the Mediterranean silk trade, hence the rich buildings built in the neoclassical style. A collection of local silk embroideries is presented in the Ethnographic Museum.

The entire surrounding area is rich in vegetation; in the Choneutiko area, in a plane grove, there is a famous mineral spring. To the south of Kima are the beautiful sandy beaches of Platana and the village of Oxilifos, located at the pointed peak of the mountain of the same name. To the north of the town, on the edge of a cliff, stands the Moni Sotira convent (XVII century). Ferries depart from Kima Paralia, 4 km from Kima, to the island of Skyros.

The southern part of the island offers landscapes that are strikingly different from the northern part, and places that are suitable for hiking. Here you will find natural and historical monuments of exceptional interest, such as the Dimosari Gorge, the aquatic biotope of Lake Distos, the “Dragon Houses” and the cape of Cavo Doro, washed by the stormy sea waves.

The southernmost port of Evia, the picturesque town of Karystos on a horseshoe-shaped bay is located at the foot of Mount Ochi, the second highest mountain, and is considered one of the main resorts of Evia. Near the port stands the Venetian fortress of Bourtzi, and to the north of it on the mountain slope are the villages with traditional architecture of Mili and Grabia. On a hill near Grabia was the ancient Carysto, famous for its powerful fleet with the Venetian fortress of Castel Rosso, which offers magnificent views of the sea and Mount Ochi. At the very top of Mount Ohi there is the famous Drakospita (House of the Dragon), consisting of solid blocks of stone, some reaching 15 meters in height.

In the south of Evia (Evia) you will find modern hotels, sea sports, picturesque seaside taverns, beautiful beaches and a vibrant nightlife. All this gives the southern part of the island a cosmopolitan character. Visitors to the island will be able to admire the beauty of the Petalia archipelago, consisting of 13 large and small green islands.

Here the mountains, sea, traditions, history and vibrant life are perfectly combined. There are so many holiday options that there is never enough time. Therefore, over the years, Euboea has remained a favorite holiday destination for both Greeks and foreigners, and it is not at all surprising that among them there are many dedicated admirers of the island.

In terms of gastronomy, few places can compare with Evia (Evia) both in the quality and variety of dishes. Livestock products of the highest quality, fresh fish and seafood will satisfy even the most sophisticated taste.

Comparative Advantages of Eubia

Every place has something special to offer its visitors, something that sets it apart and makes it unique. What we call comparative advantage. The comparative advantages of Euboea, in addition to the sun, nature, picturesqueness, cuisine and hospitality of the local people, are unique natural phenomena that can hardly be found anywhere else. In addition, it is worth mentioning a large number of Byzantine monuments, as well as the Church of St. John the Russian.

Tidal phenomenon in the Euripus Strait in Chalkis

In the capital of Euboea, Chalkis, you can observe a unique tidal phenomenon in which the water flow changes its direction every 6 hours. Ebbs and flows exist everywhere. However, in Chalkis they have their own peculiarity: every 6 hours the current freezes for 8 minutes, and then rushes again, but in the opposite direction. It seems that there is a river in front of us. The strength of the current depends on the position of the moon. We are talking about a phenomenon caused by the gravitational forces of the moon and the sun and the difference in water levels in the northern and southern parts of the Euboean Gulf. This rare natural phenomenon has been the focus of attention of many researchers since ancient times, but its reasons still remain unclear. It was studied by the great Greek Aristotle, who died in Chalkis, Eratosthenes and many modern Greek and foreign scientists.

The healing waters of Edipsos and Yaltra

In the north of Evia there are the villages of Loutra Edipsou and Yaltra - charming villages with hospitable residents, bright colors and colorful aromas. Nature has endowed them with a valuable gift - healing springs. Today their number exceeds 80, and the temperature in them ranges from 28 to 86°C.

The mineral waters of the Edipsos resort are considered one of the richest in beneficial elements and the most effective in the world. The evaporation of hot water, the temperature of which sometimes exceeds 80°C, makes a strong impression.

Various hydropathic facilities have been built here - in the form of traditional baths and in the form of swimming pools, which operate both inside and outside the hotels. Outdoor pools allow you to undergo water treatment without high costs. However, physiotherapy rooms in hotels, equipped with gymnastic apparatus and electrotherapeutic devices, help the body to respond most fully to water treatment.

The municipal beach is intended for those who want to combine treatment in the springs with the healing effects of sea water.

One of the main attractions of the Edipsos resort is the recently renovated hotel THERMAE SYLLA. The hotel is named after the Roman commander Silla, who, according to Plutarch, stayed in the city to undergo hydrotherapy for a leg disease.

The conclusions of hydrotherapy specialists and other scientists indicate that the mineral waters of Edipsos and Yaltra are indicated for the following diseases: arthritis, rheumatism, spondyloarthritis, radiculitis, sciatica, ankylosis, migraine, tendonitis, chronic gynecological diseases, angiopathy, diseases of the endocrine system and etc.

Petrified Forest and Museum of Fossil Mammals in Kerasje

A completely unique natural phenomenon is the petrified forest at Kerasje in northern Evia, one of the richest and most beautiful fossil forests in all of Europe. The main area of the forest is located in the area of Psili Rakhi (High Ridge), west of the village of Kerasya, where there are entire clusters of large petrified trees, as well as parts of petrified trunks.

Based on studies of ancient flora, it was concluded that its age is approximately 10-25 million years. The petrified forest was formed as a result of intense volcanic activity, which was observed after the collision of the Eurasian (in the north) and African (in the south) lithospheric plates. Volcanic activity resulted in the release of large amounts of lava, dust and other volcanic elements that settled over a large area. Volcanic dust covered the dense forests. The subsequent intensive circulation of hot liquids rich in silicon led to the perfect petrification of plants. During this process, the replacement, molecule by molecule, of organic plant matter with mineral matter contained in the hot waters took place (basic petrification). Therefore, both the internal structure of the tree and its external structure are perfectly preserved.

Kerasya Museum

During excavations, fossilized remains of mammals that lived on Euboea more than 6 million years ago were found. Saber-toothed tigers, Elladotherium, Chalicotherium, elephants, Hipparion and Icthytherium lived here.

The Museum, which opened in 2006, houses paleontological exhibits found in the area.

"Dragon Houses" in Karistia

We are talking about stone structures made of grayish limestone, almost always large in size, built with skill and scattered throughout Central and Southern Evia.
In total, more than 20 “dragon houses” were discovered in this part of the island. However, the most important is the one located on the top of Mount Ohi. This ancient structure, measuring 4.85 m x 9.80 m, is constructed from giant stone blocks without the use of any joint mortar. Its walls are so impressive that tales of monstrous dragons come to mind. The method of making the roof is interesting. The ceiling stones are stacked on top of each other, creating a structure that resembles an overturned boat.

Although it has not yet been precisely determined what these temple complexes were intended for, it is believed that they were dedicated to the ancient Greek gods Hercules and Hera.

Mountain village in Papades

This is an extremely well-equipped and fenced village with an area of about two hectares, located in a beautiful place with a beautiful view of the sea. It consists of two-room houses of 58 m2 each.

The village hosts guests from Greece and abroad who stay there to indulge in some activity beneficial to both the mind and body - cycling, trekking, horse riding, volleyball, basketball, herding, milking, visiting a winery, cheese factory and oil press.

Monasteries and places of pilgrimage on the island of Evia

Religion is the faith that a person comes to with his mind and feelings. The New Testament says that religion is the totality of human acts of faith. Religious tourism, as an expression of this human need, is an important component of the Greek tourist flow, and consists of visiting places of religious worship such as churches and monasteries.

In Greece, many Orthodox monuments have been preserved, which are an integral part of the national heritage, attracting numerous visitors. Today there are 16 monasteries throughout Evia that make an unforgettable impression.

One of the most important places of pilgrimage not only in Evia, but throughout Greece, is the Church of St. John the Russian, which is located in the village of Prokopi in the north of Evia. The temple contains the relics of St. John the Russian, which were brought with them to their new homeland by the Greeks, residents of the village of Prokopi, who fled from Cappadocia in 1925. Thousands of pilgrim visitors arrive at the monastery, especially on the day of the church holiday, May 27. Christians from all parts of the world come to worship the saint and ask him for help in difficult moments.

Skyros Island

Administratively, the island is part of the Euboea nome. This traditional Aegean island fascinates with its constantly changing landscapes, captivates with its special atmosphere and is suitable for any type of tourism.

Tourist development has not changed the traditional character of the island. Linarya Bay welcomes visitors arriving from Kimi by ferry. The island also has an airport with daily flights to Athens.

The change in landscape is striking. The northwestern part of the island is forested, while the southeast is wild and rocky. Peaceful green landscapes on the one hand, and wild and majestic beauty on the other - this is what every nature lover dreams of when going on vacation.

The majestic Chora (Skyros) with its Byzantine castle, picturesque villages, magnificent sandy beaches and deep crystal clear waters leave an unforgettable experience. As you walk through the city and villages, you will undoubtedly notice shops selling traditional art. Ceramics, embroidery, carved wooden decorative arts and furniture have a centuries-old tradition in Skyros. They are distinguished by high quality and intricate patterns.

The island has a tourist infrastructure to suit every taste. The cuisine of Skyros is full of gastronomic pleasures - this includes unique dishes from fresh fish and seafood, and traditional meat dishes and cheeses.

Guests of the island, and especially its little visitors, will be crazy about the charming Skyros horses. This breed of horse is not found anywhere else in the world. Their height ranges from 90 to 110 cm and they are very friendly, making them ideal for children's riding.

You will find plenty of entertainment on the island. In bars and cafes with live music you will spend unforgettable evenings, and those who stay until the morning will be able to admire the magnificent sunrise, as if rising from the depths of the sea.

Skyros with its impressive Kohilas and maples, with the famous colored marble known as the “Skyros mottled stone”, more than 300 churches and chapels, with the characteristic accent of the islanders, chanting songs, preserved manners and customs, with the archaeological museum and the Faltaits museum, with The incomparable cuisine is a unique place.

The article uses reports from the 2nd Russian-Greek Forum:

  • Nikos Peppas, Head of Tourism and Culture "Evia (Evia) - A YEAR-ROUND TOURIST DESTINATION"
  • Evangelos Angelis, Chairman of the Tourism Department of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Euboea "Evia (EVBOEA)"
  • Olymbia Fortotira, Head of Tourism Development Department of the Municipality of Elimnion "Elimnion Region: Green-Blue Paradise of the Island of Evia (Euboea)"

Evia (or Euboea) is the second largest island in Greece after Crete and the third in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is located just 80 km north of Athens and stretches along the northern coast of Attica. The island is separated from the mainland by the Euripus Strait, which narrows to 14 m near the capital of the island, the city of Chalkida - at this point a bridge is thrown from the island to the mainland.

The Evripos Strait (Evripos) is famous for the fact that every 6 hours with the ebb and flow of the tide, the current freezes for a short time, the famous “standing” waves form on its surface, and then the water again rushes at a speed of up to 8 miles per hour, but in the opposite direction . According to legend, Aristotle drowned here while trying to solve the riddle of the strait.

The interior of the island is covered in a continuous mass of centuries-old pine and spruce trees. The magnificent beaches are protected from the wind by cliffs against which the waves of the Aegean Sea crash. In the silence of mountain gorges, healing hot springs bubble - these are the typical landscapes of Evia. The holiday here is very relaxed, and thanks to the hot springs, traditional time on the beach can be combined with treatment and intense excursions both on the island itself and on the mainland, traveling to Athens, Delphi, Meteora and other attractions of Central Greece.

How to get there

The island's capital, Chalkida, is 88 km from Athens and Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. You can get to Evia via one of two bridges (the old one, only 14 m long, in the center of the capital, and the new 600 m long, designed only for road traffic, located closer to the outskirts). Ferry service is also well established - the island and the mainland are connected at various points by 6 ferry crossings: Rafina - Karystos or Marmari, Arkitsa - Edipsos, Glyfa (Phthiotida) - Agiokampos, Agia Marina - Almiropotamos, Oropos - Eretria and Volos - Kymi.

Chalkis is also connected to the Greek capital by rail, and by sea you can reach the islands of the Northern Sporades and the island. Skyros, administratively part of the nome of Euboea.

Weather in Evia

The entire island has a Mediterranean climate. The region is characterized by moderately hot summers with an average temperature of about +28-30°C and humid winters, when the thermometer barely drops below +5°C.

Hotels and apartments in Evia

There are few hotels on Evia, most of them are categories A and B (4* and 3*), of good quality. Almost all entertainment is on hotel premises. The beaches are sandy, but there are many secluded places on the coast.

South of Evia is the main tourist area. It is here that the most modern hotels are built, beautiful beaches are equipped, nightlife is vibrant and colorful bazaars and taverns do not stop during the day. There are also many opportunities for sea sports. It perfectly combines mountains, sea, ancient traditions, rich history and vibrant modern life. Therefore, for many years, Euboea has remained a favorite holiday destination not only among visitors, but also among the Greeks themselves.

Treatment and spa

172 km north of Chalkida is the resort town of Edipsos (Edeps), famous for its hot mineral springs. It was its waters, according to ancient Greek myths, that Hercules used to restore strength. And in the Roman era, the Roman military leader Sulla came here for treatment and restoration of strength, as evidenced by the Baths of Sulla with picturesque arches.

The water in the Silla Baths contains low concentrations of healing radon. It is known that these hot radon springs are ideal for the treatment of rheumatic diseases, gynecological and endocrinological disorders, and diseases of the cardiovascular system. In addition, the local waters are good for beauty treatments, which is why the popular Thermae Sylla SPA complex has grown here.

Near the city is the city of Kymi (70 km from the capital of Chalkida), in a plane tree grove near Choneutiko there is a famous mineral spring and popular health resorts. To the south are the magnificent sandy beaches of Platana and the village of Oxilifos, located at the top of the mountain of the same name. On the edge of the cliff to the north of these places stands the Moni Sotira convent (XVII century).

Karystos - the main resort of Evia

In the south of Evia, at the foot of Mount Ochi and a horseshoe-shaped bay, lies the picturesque town of Karystos. It is considered one of the main resorts of Evia. Near the port of Karystos stands the 13th-century Venetian fortress of Bourtzi. A little further north, on the slope of a mountain near the village of Grabia, rises the ancient Caryste, once well known for its powerful fleet with the Venetian fortress of Castel Rosso. From here there is a magnificent view of the sea and Mount Ohi, on the top of which is the famous Drakospita - the House of the Dragon, made up of solid stone blocks up to 15 m high.

Amazing structures are called Dragon Houses simply because it is extremely difficult to imagine any other way to build them: they are assembled from giant blocks of stone without any connecting mortar. The ceiling stones are stacked on top of each other, creating what looks like an overturned boat. What these buildings were intended for has not yet been determined, but there are assumptions that these are temple complexes dedicated to Hercules and Hera.

Another popular resort is Eretria.

Thermal resort located on the island of Evia, 152 km northeast of the city of Chalkida - the capital of the island of Evia. It is the second largest island in the Aegean Sea after Crete. It is located along the eastern coast of mainland Greece and is separated from the mainland by the narrow Euripus Strait, narrowed at the city of Chalkis to 15 meters, where a bridge spans it.

Getting to Euboea possible either by bridge or by ferry, connecting the island to the mainland at various points.

From ancient times to the present day, this strait continues to amaze with a mysterious phenomenon: every 4-6 hours the current changes its direction due to the periodic change of tides and the formation of so-called standing waves.

Aristotle, and later many other researchers, including modern ones, tried to unravel the mystery of this phenomenon, but so far to no avail. There are also mineral springs in the southern part of the island.

A little about history...

Rich history of Euboea manifests itself in the many religions professed in Chalkis.

Chalkida is the capital of the island, here you can see ancient baths, the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the Palaestra with mosaics and an ancient theater in which unique underground passages have been preserved.

In general, the number of ancient monuments on Euboea is small. Among the widely known and recommended ones is the ancient city of Eretria.

And although there are no major historical monuments here, Eretria is worth a visit. Frankish and Byzantine fortresses are of great interest. The city once competed with Khalkis for the right to be the first city of the island. Eretria in 87 BC was destroyed.

Modern Eretria grew up on the site of the ruins of the old city. The best exhibits were transferred to the Archaeological Museum of Chalkis, but still there is a lot of interesting things in Eretria.

In the Archaeological Museum of Eretria you can see image of Medusa Gorgon , found in a villa from the 4th century BC. Next to the museum is the House of Mosaics, a restored 4th-century building with perfectly preserved floor mosaics.

In the northwestern part of the city, the ruins of an ancient theater have been preserved. Of great interest is the corridor under the stage, at the end of which, during the action, a deity sent by providence suddenly appeared. The unexpected intervention of the gods - the arbiters of human destinies - is a fairly well-known theatrical device that was often used in ancient Greek drama.

In the city center you can see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the ancient market. The modern picturesque town of Eretria stretches along the coast and has become one of the leading resorts on the island of Euboea. And today Eretria is a wonderful place to relax with sandy beaches and azure-clear sea

Built in a picturesque location - right on the seashore, just two kilometers from Eretria, a city famous for its rich historical past, surrounded by centuries-old pine trees and dense plantations of tall shrubby trees, the Negroponte Resort Eretria opens its arms to the sea, giving its guests a truly unforgettable view of the Evian (Eubean) Gulf and the eastern coast of Attica.

THERMAE SYLLA is the ultimate healing center for people of all ages, blessed by nature itself - hot mineral springs bubble out from underground both on the territory of the hotel complex and in the entire surrounding area (the age of the springs is about 2000 years).

Description of the island

The beaches of Greece and the Greek islands are a place to relax alone with nature, the sea, try healthy Mediterranean cuisine, visit ancient Greek churches and other attractions, and improve your health.

Euboea (island, Greece) is the second largest in the Aegean Sea. Only Crete is bigger. Euboea belongs to the Northern Sporades archipelago, separated from the mainland by the Euripus Strait.

Evia Island Greece

Euboea (Greece) is great for a summer beach holiday. Although the island is mountainous, it is covered with picturesque forests; olive groves, vineyards, and orchards grow on its fertile soil. The view of clean beaches with a clear sea surface makes the island even more attractive. Its beauty and watercolor transparency of views attracts artists and aesthetes.

The area of the island is about 3662 square kilometers. Located along the northeastern coast of Greece. Population - 193,720 inhabitants (excluding tourist flow). Evia island in Greece on the map.

History of Evia

The history of the island is very rich. The inhabitants of the island were Abantians, Ionians, Dryopes and Thessalian tribes. Until the end of the 6th century BC. e. The Greek policies of Chalkis and Eretria operated on the island. The island reached its greatest development during the period of Antiquity. The cities of Euboea during this period were included in the Roman Empire, from the 4th to the 13th centuries AD. e. the island was controlled by Byzantium (East Roman Empire).

By this time, Orthodoxy had finally established itself on the island. In the 13th century, the island was plundered by participants in the 4th Crusade, and the island itself became the lordship of Negroponte. From the mid-13th century, Byzantium again controlled the area, but by the end of the century this control was again lost.

This is interesting! In the 14th century, the island of Evia was controlled first by Catalonia, then ruled by the Venetian Republic for almost a century. In 1470, the Venetians surrendered the island to the Ottoman Empire, which held it until 1829. From 1830 to the present day it has been part of Greece. Now famous for its resorts.

Climate of Evia

The island's climate is dry subtropical (temperate Mediterranean). In the summer months there is usually heat, which is easily tolerated due to low air humidity. Temperatures in summer range from 25 to 35 degrees, in winter - from 5 to 15 °C. From mid-winter to early spring it is cold and windy, but there is little precipitation. Basically, these are short rains, sometimes thunderstorms from October to April, but no more than 12-13 days a month.

Island Monument

Sights of Euboea, Greece

There are not many attractions on the island of Evia, but they are all unique.

Note! The main attraction is the monastery of St. John the Russian in the village of Prokopi, where his incorrupt relics are kept. And the church in honor of John the Russian.

The city of Chalkida is the first city that welcomes tourists coming from Athens. Chalkida is a city with a long history and will be attractive to those interested in antiquity. It houses one of the very first Orthodox churches in Greece - the Church of St. Paraskeva. The building was rebuilt. The temple is still in operation.

In the northern part of the city there is an interesting building - the Red House, which belonged to the noble Malliu family. Interesting buildings include the House with Statues. This is the city hall. From the Red House there is the Chalkida embankment, which is interesting for vacationing tourists to walk along.

Holidays in Evia

In the city you can see the only surviving mosque of the 11 mosques of Chalkida, Emir Zadeh. It was built in the first years of the Muslim yoke. Now it houses a valuable collection of Byzantine mosaics and ceramics.

The Architectural Museum of Chalkida is also worth visiting. The exhibition there is small, but it allows you to get acquainted with all periods of the life of an ancient city with a rich history.

The second most important city in Evia is Eretria. During Antiquity, these two policies were rivals, and their confrontation led to war. Chalcis won, but Eretria remained a large and influential city for a long time.

Although the Archaeological Museum of Eretria has a small exhibition, all the archaeological finds in it are truly exceptional. On display here is a terracotta head of Medusa. The museum has 2 rooms; sculptures and bas-reliefs found during excavations are displayed outside.

Note! In Eretria, the Castela Rosso fortress and the ruins of the palace have a very interesting history. Right opposite the museum is the House of Mosaics with preserved floor mosaics.

In the northwestern part of the city are the ruins of an ancient theater. The ruins of a gymnasium and a palace have been preserved in the city. A short path at the top of the theater leads to the Acropolis, where fragments of walls and towers are visible. In the city center you can see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the ancient market.

The resort occupies only a small part of the island with good tourist infrastructure - the coastal area where Eretria and Chalkis are located. This part of the coast with clean sandy beaches and good hotels is perfectly suited for a relaxing holiday. The rest of Evia is mountainous, covered with forests, olive groves and steep mountain roads. However, for a wild holiday full of adventure, this is more suitable.

Thermal springs

An important part of any vacation is recovery; you need to strengthen your strength.

For a wellness holiday, pay attention to the Edipsos resort, located in the north of the island. These thermal springs are famous even outside of Greece. A modern hydropathic clinic has been built here, and there is a comfortable hotel complex “Thermae Sylla”. The symbol of the city of Edipsos is the image of a man breaking a crutch on his leg. These baths are called “Therms of Hercules”. Today in Edipsos there are about 80 thermal baths with water of different temperatures.

You can stay and take SPA treatments at the five-star Thermae Sylla Spa & Wellness Hotel 5*, official website, and you can be treated with healing water in the hotel SPA salon. The hotel is 276 km from Thessaloniki and 184 km from Athens. The international airport is a 2-hour drive from the hotel.

Note! Almost every hotel has a swimming pool with healing water. In some places where thermal waters flow into the sea, “baths” are installed, which make it possible to use thermal springs anywhere on the island.

Beaches of Evia

The beaches between Eretria and Chalkida on the coast of Evia are directed towards the mainland and are well equipped. Hotel beaches are more well maintained.

  • Kalamos beach is very good, with clear water, it is located between the rocks and its appearance resembles a fairy-tale place. This is a sandy beach in the central part of the island, about 10 km southeast of Avlonari. Almost in the middle, the coastline of Kalamos is divided by a cliff, forming two separate beaches. One part is landscaped - with sun loungers and sun umbrellas, taverns. Nearby there are 5-star mini-hotels and apartments in Kalamos. The second beach is just soft white sand, azure waters of the Aegean Sea, pine trees and beautiful rocks.
  • Chiladou Beach is located on the other side of the island of Evia, which faces the open Aegean Sea, and not the strait, so it is often stormy there.

Attention! There is a nudist section on the beach.

Evia, or Euboea, is one of the largest Greek islands. In terms of size, it ranks second among the island territories of Greece, behind Crete; in Europe, Evia is third (moving Cyprus from second position). The area of the island is a little more than 3.5 thousand square kilometers, the coastline is a little less than 700 kilometers long.

The island is separated from mainland Greece by the Euboean Strait. In the very heart of Euboea lies the capital, the largest city of the island - Chalkida. You can get from it to the mainland using two bridges: the old and the new. From the old one there is a view of the mysterious phenomenon - “standing waves”. Aristotle also tried to unravel the mystery of the appearance of this. It's all about the changing ebbs and flows with each other. The new bridge is also famous, being one of the largest European suspension bridges.

Geographically, Evia is divided into three regions: central, southern and northern. The main urban centers of the island: Edipsos (world famous for its thermal springs), Aliveri, Amarinthos, Artaki, Vasiliko, Eretria (port of Euboea), Istiaea, Kymi, Karystos and Limni. However, the Greeks had to retreat after receiving news of the death of the Spartans.

The thermal springs of northern Evia are also known throughout the world. The western part of this territory is famous for its large number of medicinal waters. Iliya is a small village where the water literally gushes out, leaving streams on the beaches. The path from the village of Yaltra to Lihada, which runs along the coast, is also rich in thermal springs and loutras. The most famous healing place is Edipsu. The springs here are over 20 thousand years old. Mention of waters is contained in Aristotle and Strabo. Edipsu does not lose its popularity even after many years.

The temple was built in an incredibly beautiful picturesque pine forest. Not far from it, a healing spring gushes out of a rock. According to legend, St. David hit the rock with his staff and healing water flowed out of it. Residents of nearby villages helped build a water supply system.

During the Turkish occupation, the monastery served as a refuge for residents of neighboring villages. A Greek secret school and hospital were established here. Unfortunately, in 1824 the Sanctuary fell to Turkish invaders and was burned. It was possible to restore the sacred monastery in 1877. A new Catholicon was erected, consecrated in honor of St. David.
