Baggage weight. Airplane baggage allowance

All baggage carried by the passenger, including hand luggage, as well as items carried in excess of the established free baggage allowance and without charging a fee, must be presented at check-in for the flight, which is due to flight safety requirements.

The passenger's baggage, which the airline accepts for transportation under its responsibility for its safety, is marked with a baggage tag and is transported in the baggage compartment of the aircraft, is called checked baggage.

Dear passengers, please note that the free baggage and hand luggage allowances depend on the class of service. If hand luggage exceeds the established standards in terms of number of pieces (for flights numbered SU 6001-6999), weight or the sum of three dimensions, the passenger must check in hand luggage as checked baggage. If, as a result, the free baggage allowance indicated on the ticket is exceeded, an additional payment must be made in accordance with the excess baggage rates.

At the boarding gate, passengers' carry-on luggage is additionally checked for compliance with size and weight standards using special measuring instruments, as well as for the number of seats (for flights numbered SU 6001-6999).

Not only the amount of effort spent, but also the cost of your flight depends on the weight of your luggage. Low-cost airlines live off the fact that many tourists cannot meet the minimum weight and are forced to buy luggage. Major airlines initially include the transportation of oversized suitcases in the price of all tickets. In any case, exceeding the maximum weight threatens with a serious surcharge, so it is better to know the norms of each airline in advance.

Everything that comes with you on board the plane is divided into two categories:

  • Hand luggage- this is what you take with you to the salon. Depending on the specific airline regulations, dimensions and weight may vary.
  • Checked baggage– these are suitcases, strollers, skis and other things that you hand over at the front desk. They are flying in the cargo compartment of the plane.

Each airline sets the weight and size of hand luggage individually. Large airlines allow up to 2 pieces of small luggage weighing up to 8-10 kg.

Checked baggage includes suitcases weighing up to 20-23 kg.

Baggage allowances for major airlines

One of the main advantages of major airlines is free baggage up to 20-23 kg. There is no need to pay extra for it.

The maximum size should be understood as approximate. The main thing is that your suitcase, based on the results of three measurements (height, width, depth), does not exceed the sum of the dimensions indicated in the table.

Baggage rules for low-cost airlines

If the restriction for large airlines is related to the safety of passengers (in case a suitcase falls on their head), then for budget airlines it is also due to the desire to make money on tourists who are inattentive to the rules.

Low-cost airlines receive the lion's share of their income from additional sales, so they limit tourists as much as possible in the allowable carry-on luggage. To do this, next to the reception desk and at the gates there are scales and niches where your bag should fit.

Unlike large companies, you must board a low-cost airline with one piece of luggage.

Some airlines allow you to bring handbags and laptops on board in addition to hand luggage.

If you know that your hand luggage is 0.5-1 kg overweight and you cannot remove anything, then it is better to register it as checked baggage in advance and pay for it as early as possible.

If it is not possible to pay online, do it at the airport at the check-in counter. It will be 1.5-2 times more expensive than online, but still cheaper than at the gate, where you will have to pay a fairly substantial amount for the advantage.

General rules for transporting baggage on an airplane

  1. The maximum weight of one suitcase is 32 kg. If there are three of you flying and packed into 1 suitcase, it should not be heavier than 32 kg. The rule was introduced for the safety of airport workers who will need to lift this suitcase and to avoid overloading the plane.
  2. If you fly business class, you can usually add 5-10 kg to the maximum indicated in the table.
  3. If your suitcase is heavier than expected, you will need to pay an overweight fee at the check-in counter.
  4. Sports equipment (skis, bicycles) has its own transportation rules. It is better to check this information on the airline’s website.
  5. If you are flying with children, check for children's luggage as well. For infants, an additional piece of luggage is usually allowed in the cabin.

Flying by plane is a very fast and convenient way to get to the right place in a short period of time. But to make air travel safe and comfortable, air carriers have developed a number of rules that must be strictly followed.

The basic rules for carrying baggage on an airplane are common to all airlines. In addition, airlines have individual conditions for baggage transportation. They depend on the country of arrival and the class of boarding ticket. To avoid any unpleasant surprises during check-in, a person should find out in advance how much baggage can be carried on the plane.

On November 5, 2017, the order of the Russian Ministry of Transport regarding the transportation of baggage on airlines in a new edition came into force. It defines the concept (weight limit) and piece concept (quantitative limit of carried pieces of luggage). There are three types of baggage rates: non-refundable without free baggage allowance and with baggage allowance, and returnable with baggage allowance.

Terminal

On a note! In civil aviation, free or paid transportation of items is determined by their dimensions (size and weight), as well as the flight range of the aircraft and cabin class. The ticket price includes baggage, which is determined by the generally accepted weight limit system. They are designated as weight.

Carriage allowance by weight

As for weight indicators, the new regulations determine the list of baggage with permissible weight in the aircraft cabin, as well as in its cargo compartment. The restrictions were introduced due to the specifics of the air movement of people. The technical characteristics of airships, compared to trains, provide for a smaller amount of transported cargo.

The new regulations set the maximum weight of free hand luggage per passenger for non-refundable tickets at 5 kg. Some carriers may increase this figure for the sake of competitive advantage. And on some airlines, restrictions have become stricter. So, in 2018, Aeroflot adjusted the rules for baggage transportation. What weight of baggage is allowed on planes of leading Russian airlines?

You can take onboard Aeroflot for free in your hand luggage:

  • One seat, the size of which is 55x40x25 centimeters and weighs 10 kilograms in economy and comfort classes and 15 kilograms in business class.
  • A backpack weighing 5 kilograms and 80 centimeters in the sum of 3 dimensions, a handbag or briefcase.
  • A duty-free package, outerwear, a suit in a case, a folding baby stroller or wheelchair for the disabled, medical supplies, etc.

Important! According to air travel rules, if baggage weighs more than 20 kg, passengers with return tickets have the right to carry from 10 to 30 kg of baggage without additional payments.

According to this system, the following indicators are provided for adults and children at least 2 years old:

  • 1st class – permissible weight 40 kg.
  • Business class – 30 kg.
  • Economy class – 20 kg.

According to the rules of air transportation, if the weight of baggage is more than 20 kg, the passenger will be required to pay extra for it if the flight is carried out at an economy fare.

Luggage in the cabin

Note! Each child under 2 years of age without a separate seat is entitled to a free baggage allowance of 10 kg.

Many international airlines allow you to take a personal item (an oversized handbag, a laptop or a camera packed in a case) as part of your carry-on luggage. In addition, carriers may allow the carriage of an umbrella, outerwear and duty-free bags.

Local transportation norm

Most airlines have adopted a piecemeal (according to the number of seats) baggage system. The piece system is differentiated depending on the class of service and/or type of tariff applied. This can be a suitcase, backpack, bag or regular bag - it is important that hand luggage fully corresponds to the size of 55x40x25 cm.

Below are the baggage allowances for several leading airlines in economy class:

AirlineDimensionsWeight
Aeroflot55 x 40 x 25 cm.10 kg.
S7 Airlines (“Siberia”)55 x 40 x 20 cm.10 kg.
"UTair"55 x 40 x 20 cm.Economy class - 10 kg, economy comfort - 2 pieces of 10 kg each
"Ural Airlines"55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
"Victory"36 x 30 x 27 cm.No limits
Nordwind55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
Red Wings55 x 40 x 20 cm.Base and Light tariffs - 10 kg, Standard tariff - 5 kg
Turkish Airlines55 x 40 x 23 cm.8 kg.
Lufthansa55 x 40 x 23 cm.8 kg.
NordStar Airlines55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
"Yamal"55 x 40 x 20 cm.5 kg.
Aegean Airlines56 x 45 x 25 cm.8 kg.

Summarizing the above, we can say that the permissible size of hand luggage for economy class is 158 cm, and for 1st and business class – 203 cm.

Oversized luggage. Kinds. Transport rules and regulations

Oversized baggage can be carried by agreement with the air carrier. The conditions will be announced to the passenger at the stage of booking the ticket. If oversized cargo is transported in the aircraft cabin, then the person will need to purchase a separate boarding pass for it.

Limitation: weight per seat cannot exceed 75 kg. If the weight nevertheless exceeds this limit, then so many tickets are purchased so that their number is a multiple of the ratio of its weight and the norm of permissible transportation; loading and unloading of luggage for a flight of any distance and complexity is carried out at the expense of the airline.

Carriage of fragile luggage

To be able to transport fragile luggage safely, it makes sense to take it with you into the cabin. But this issue also has its limitations:

  • The dimensions of the box, bag or suitcase must be no more than 55x40x20 centimeters (115 centimeters in the sum of the length, width and height measurements).
  • Many airlines do not accept items longer than 60 centimeters (except the tube) in hand luggage.
  • According to the standards of most air carriers, the weight of cargo should not exceed 5-10 kg.

If the luggage is fragile but large (for example, musical instruments), then a separate seat is purchased for it.

Important! Discounts and bonuses from airlines do not apply to the transportation of fragile luggage.

Fragile cargo can also be checked into the baggage compartment of the aircraft. In agreement with airline representatives, it will be marked with a special tag.

List of baggage restrictions and prohibitions

In order to ensure flight safety, baggage rules prohibit the carriage of a number of items and substances on passenger aircraft. These include all types of weapons and their imitation. Stabbing and cutting objects (knives, knitting needles, scissors, etc.). Explosive substances (gasoline, gunpowder, aerosols). Alcohol with an alcohol content of more than 24%.

Also, small personal vehicles are prohibited unless their lithium battery is removed. The transportation of many medications, etc. is restricted.

To avoid troubles during pre-flight inspection, you need to familiarize yourself with the full list of restrictions and prohibitions when carrying baggage. This data can be viewed on the websites of any air carrier.

New rules for baggage transportation. Actual information

New rules for carrying baggage on an airplane, which came into force on November 5, 2017, combined the requirements of all Russian air carriers, except for the low-cost carrier Pobeda. This is the first airline to provide services at low prices.

For example, on some airlines it was previously possible to take up to 32 kg of luggage on a long-distance flight, but after the decree, only 30 kg per piece. 1 piece of luggage is one suitcase, or one bag or one backpack. There has been an increase in the carry-on baggage allowance to 10 kg.

There have been no changes to cargo size standards. They are determined individually by the carrier.

All changes can be viewed in detail on the website of the airline of interest.

Your air luggage will arrive safely at your arrival point if you follow some tips from experienced travelers:

  • To avoid damage to your cargo during transportation and not create problems with the transportation of neighboring luggage, you need to make sure that your bags and suitcases are in good condition. They must close tightly and have no cracks or cracks. You can additionally pack things in cellophane. This inexpensive service exists at almost every airport.
  • If the weight of baggage or hand luggage exceeds the individually established standards for a particular carrier, then you will have to pay extra for the extra kilos.
  • You can put things in the bag on either side, but if the wheels or handle stick out, you will have to check it in as checked luggage (if you exceed the limit, you will need to pay extra). The check is carried out at the check-in counter, before passport control and before the boarding gate.
  • You can add a laptop or other large gadgets to your basic free carry-on luggage if you put them in a backpack (up to 80 cm in size), briefcase or handbag.
  • For transporting liquids (gels, aerosols, shampoos), a container with a volume of no more than 100 ml is suitable. No other container will be allowed on board. All containers up to 100 ml must be packed in a transparent resealable bag measuring 20x20 cm. The norm is one bag per passenger. You shouldn’t hide it too deeply, as you will have to present it during security at the airport.
  • It is important to know which countries do not allow certain items to be carried on board an aircraft. For example, in some Islamic countries the transportation of attributes of a religious nature is strictly prohibited.

Loading

Carrying baggage on an airplane is subject to new rules, which are prescribed to ensure greater safety, first of all, for the passengers themselves. Therefore, it is worth understanding some restrictions. Air carrier information services will provide comprehensive information about what you can and cannot take with you on a flight.

Carry-on luggage on an airplane always raises many questions: what can you take into the cabin and what can’t? What is the maximum carry-on bag size and weight? What other requirements are there?

To answer these questions, I divided the article into two large blocks: the first contains an overview of the basic rules for carrying hand luggage, and the second contains a summary table with the conditions of specific airlines.

Rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane

Classic airlines allow you to take checked baggage and hand luggage with you on your trip (at the cheapest fares, baggage may be for an additional fee, in business class you are allowed to carry twice as much). Low-cost airlines usually only allow hand luggage in the basic fare.

As a rule, its dimensions are as follows: 55 cm × 40 cm × 20 cm or 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions. These dimensions vary slightly between airlines, as does the weight allowance.

It is important that not all items can be taken in hand luggage; there are also restrictions - more about them below. It’s better to know everything in advance so as not to be upset when your favorite manicure set or heirloom knife is taken away from you.

What can and cannot be taken in hand luggage on a plane?

The list of permitted items in the aircraft cabin is usually the same for everyone; these rules are universal. Particular attention should be paid to liquids.

  • The volume of the liquid container should not exceed 100 ml.
  • In total, you are allowed to take no more than 1 liter of liquid in total in your hand luggage, that is, if you have 10 packages of 100 ml each, that’s approx. It is important that all these jars must be in resealable transparent packaging.
  • Security will ask you to present this liquid during security screening.

What can you take in hand luggage on a plane:

  • Electronics: laptop, tablet, camera, mobile phone, electric razor, hair dryer and other small equipment.
  • Hygiene products (safety (!) razor, toothbrush, shampoo, toothpaste, creams, varnishes, gels, balms - all up to 100 ml).
  • Musical instruments. It is better to check this point and all the nuances with the airline in advance.

  • Drinks and alcohol in glass and plastic packaging no more than 100 ml.

What you cannot take in hand luggage:

  • Weapons or items that imitate weapons (including toys).

Almost all of this can be packed in your luggage. Any explosive, toxic or flammable liquids or weapons are prohibited from being carried on an airplane, including in luggage.

Small backpacks and suitcases are suitable for carry-on luggage - now they are specially made so that you can take them on board an airplane. Some airlines allow you to take, in addition to one piece of hand luggage, a laptop, a camera, a handbag, and a small stroller. But the Pobeda airline, on the contrary, allows you to carry only a handbag/briefcase/umbrella in the cabin of the plane - the rest of the things must be packed in 10 kg of luggage.

Carry-on luggage on an airplane - comparison table by airline

In addition to the basic rules that all airlines require you to follow, each has its own maximum size and weight of hand luggage, usually within 5-10 kg. These rules change frequently; before purchasing tickets, I recommend that you read the latest information on the official website of the airline you plan to fly with.

For example, my mother flew on an S7 from Tyumen to Kaliningrad for 6,000 rubles round trip when they just introduced a promotional fare without baggage. It seems to be very cheap, but they are very picky about the weight and size of hand luggage and force you to pay extra for any excess of the limits. And we flew on, and no one weighed the hand luggage, much less measured it, although they have requirements, and we tried to fulfill them.

Still, it is advisable to stay within the given limits, especially for flights on low-cost airlines.

Travelers often have a number of questions regarding the transportation of luggage, as well as all the nuances associated with it. As statistics show, many want to know how much a suitcase should weigh at the airport. Yes, this is far from the only question.

You need to understand that during a flight, luggage is divided into two parts: hand luggage and general luggage. If they tell you about luggage, then they mean exactly those things that you check in at check-in. Everything you take with you is called hand luggage. Completely different rules and regulations already apply to it. The main points to pay attention to are weight and dimensions.

Airplane baggage weight

You should know that each airline has its own rules and regulations regarding weight. There are only 2 systems in the world.

  1. Weight system. These rules apply to almost all flights within Asia, the CIS and some European countries. As for the weight that can be carried free of charge, the standards are as follows:
  • passengers with economy class tickets are allowed only 20 kg per person;
  • business class includes luggage weighing up to 30 kg;
  • If you are traveling with a child under 2 years old, then he is provided with 10 kg of luggage weight.

There are some exceptions. For example, if you participate in airline bonus programs, you can take on 10-20 kg more.

You need to understand that the weight system only limits the weight itself, and not the number of places. That is, you can have at least 5 bags with a total acceptable value. If you are traveling with two or three, then it is possible to combine the weight of suitcases. For example, a family of two may have 30 kg of luggage. In this case, the permissible norm is 32 kg.

As for excess weight, you will have to pay extra for the extra kilogram at airline rates. There may also be exceptions here. Some people close their eyes to the slight difference, while others, on the contrary, will count everything, right down to the grams.

Practice shows that some flight routes initially mean increased baggage weight. This means that before you buy a ticket, you must immediately clarify the weight system and the exact values. By the way, this can be done immediately on the official website of the carrier company.

  1. Number of seats system. Already from the name it becomes clear that the carrier does not focus on the total weight, but on the number of seats. A similar system is found in the USA and Canada. Recently, Aeroflot has also begun to use a similar system. Thus, when flying from Sheremetyevo or Domodedovo, be sure to check the baggage system.

So, the system makes it possible to carry the following amount of baggage for free:

  1. Economy class ticket holders are allowed 1 seat weighing 23 kg. Most often - 2 pieces of 23 kg each.
  2. Business class means 2 seats weighing 32 kg each.

The level of customer participation in bonus programs makes it possible to transport a larger number of places. It all depends on the bonus level.

With all these standards, you should know that the total weight does not add up. For example, if at least one suitcase is more than a kilogram, you will have to pay extra for it. If you are flying as a family, the same rules apply. That is, it is impossible to sum up the number of seats and weight for three.

Interesting fact: movers are prohibited from lifting bags weighing more than 32 kg. If your luggage weighs 35 kg, you will have to buy another bag or package in order to shift the excess.

Permissible dimensions and transportation rules

As for the weight of luggage, it all depends on the established standards. For example, with a number of seats system, the sum of all sides, that is, length, width and height should not exceed 158 cm. If a weight system is in effect, then a total of 203 cm is allowed on all sides.

But what to do in case of discrepancy? There is nothing wrong with this, since it is possible to register such luggage as oversized. This includes:

  1. Various musical instruments.
  2. Large sports equipment - for example, skis, snowboards.
  3. Various appliances: TVs, refrigerators, washing machines.
  4. Simply oversized luggage weighing more than 32 kg.

Is it safe to carry fragile luggage on an airplane? Yes, just for this purpose, do not forget to inform at registration that it must be handled with special care. In this case, a special sticker or tag is placed on it. Please note that the bags do not travel along a belt, but loaders come to pick them up.
