In this film, animated scenes are interspersed with musical numbers and game scenes shot with the participation of actors and illustrating the events of the cartoon or concerning certain problems related to the pirates' lifestyle: for example, greed, smoking or alcoholism. At the same time, the manner of filming musical numbers and game episodes differs in different episodes: somewhere the image is color, somewhere it is black and white. One game scene simulates a silent film using intertitles, and in some episodes, live filming is combined with animation.

Plot

An unusual guest comes to the inn "Admiral Benbow". The scars on his face betrayed him a former pirate who had experienced many storms and drunken fights. This is Billy Bones, a sailor who was once in Captain Flint's crew. He was very scared and drank a lot of rum all the time. He promised to pay Jim Hawkins - a boy who works in an inn - three pence in silver, but every month, if he suddenly noticed near the inn "... a sailor on one leg ...". The sailor got a map of the island from Flint, where he buried his treasure, and now he was afraid that it would be taken away by the gang of John Silver, a one-legged pirate who was ready to do anything for a gold coin.

During his entire stay at Admiral Benbow, his former ship comrades came to Billy Bons: Black Dog, who was hunting for a map of Treasure Island, then Blind Pew, who gave Bons a black mark. Due to intense experiences and excessive use of rum, some time after coming to the inn of Blind Pew, Billy Bones died, and as a result, the map falls into the hands of Jim. He escapes from a gang led by Blind Pew, heading straight for Dr. David Livesey. V Eventually, the pirates fled from the inn, and Blind Pew fell into a barrel and drowned in it. With squire John Trelawney involved, all three prepare a ship for Treasure Island. Discussing the details of the upcoming journey at the inn, the friends encounter a hostile pirate. But Jim is quick to deal with him because he does exercises every morning. Gathering a group of seasoned sailors under the command of Captain Alexander Smollett, the heroes on a ship called "Hispaniola" head for the island.

On the way, a conspiracy is exposed. It turns out that most of the crew consists of the pirates who were in Captain Flint's team, led by Silver. Dr. Livesey, Squire Trelawney and Captain Smollett take refuge in an abandoned fort on the island, while Jim, along with the thugs and their commander, finds Captain Flint's cache. But there is no treasure there. They were found long ago by Ben Gunn, a pirate once abandoned on the island. He and his partner attack the pirates and help Jim carry the treasure to the ship. At the end, the ship, the Hispaniola, sails back to England.

Differences from the book

The lines of the heroes of the film are almost identical to those of the heroes of Stevenson. However, in order to achieve comic effect or to simplify the plot, what is happening does not fully correspond to the novel:

  • In the book, Jim Hawkins is a teenage boy who lives at the Admiral Benbow Inn with his parents. In the first part of the novel, his father dies, and Jim and his mother are forced to survive the pirate attack on the inn. However, in the cartoon, Jim is already almost an adult young man and lives in his tavern alone. He is helped by a one-eyed cat, which Billy Bones brought with him, and Jim's mother is only mentioned in passing.
  • In the book, Dr. Livesey bleeds Billy Bonsu, and in the film he listens to him with a stethoscope and counts his pulse. There is also Dr. Livesey - a merry fellow who can do everything playfully. This image of the doctor does not match his prototype in the book.
  • In the book, Blind Pew is trampled by the horses of the soldiers of the customs guard, who galloped to the "Admiral Benbow" to help. In the film, he rolled off a cliff in a barrel and drowned in the sea. In the same place, Pugh unfolds from his bosom a whole canvas with the state military awards awarded to him (that is, Pugh was once both a royal sailor and a privateer who bravely defended his homeland, unless, of course, he stole these medals).
  • In the book, Jim identifies the Black Dog in the Spyglass and shouts. He escapes, after which Silver plays a nice guy, convincing Jim that they will catch him. In the cartoon, Black Dog drinks rum in a tavern with other visitors and watches Jim's battle with a fat pirate, and then even becomes one of the sailors of the Hispaniola that Silver recruited.
  • Sometimes the exact adherence to the lines of the characters in the novel leads to contradictions with what is happening on the screen. For example, when the heroes, while still on the schooner, learn about the conspiracy, to Trelawney's question, "How many people are loyal to us on the ship?" - Captain Smollett replies:

There are seven of us, along with Jim.

This corresponds to the plot of the book, but not the cartoon - there are only four positive characters in the cartoon, not seven. However, after defending the fort, the captain says:

There were four of us against nineteen. Now there are four of us against nine.

This phrase already answers the plot of the cartoon, not the book. In the film, the number of pirates cannot be counted. Most often, apart from Silver, there are four or five pirates in the frame.

  • Returning to the fort, which was surrendered to the pirates, Jim Hawkins says that he killed Israel Hands (as it happens in the book). Meanwhile, in the episode of the capture of the schooner by Jim Hands, it remains to hang between the masts of the Hispaniola, holding on to the ends of a rope cut by his own dagger. In addition, it stays there when the heroes head back.
  • In the book, Captain Smollett received two bullet wounds during a battle with pirates and was unable to move independently. In the cartoon, a fort wall fell on him, but he was safe and sound.
  • In the book, Dr. Livesey performs a medical examination of the pirates long before they reach the place where the treasure was.
  • In the film, the treasures from the island were taken out completely, and in the book only gold was taken out. The rest (silver bullion and weapons) remained on the island, waiting for other treasure hunters. “Let whoever wants to go after them,” says Jim in one of the translations.
  • The cartoon ends with a sail, and the fate of the treasure is not described. The book ends with a description of who and how disposed of his share. The only thing that is not described in the book is the fate of Jim's share.
  • Squire Trelawney is characterized as blunt, greedy, voracious, lazy, cowardly and arrogant. This description suits Trelawney's moneylender from the 1937 Soviet film and contradicts what Jim said in both the book and the film: "The squire is the most generous person in the whole world." In the book, Trelawney is haughty and chatty, but brave and courageous. He is also the best shooter.
  • Silver's "dossier" indicates that he is not married, like all the other cartoon characters, and the book (in a letter from Squire Trelawney) mentions the fact that he is married to a black woman. In addition, Silver himself tells one of the sailors that his wife is waiting for him at the "agreed place" with the money raised from the sale of the tavern and left over from other trips "for luck" (Jim hears this conversation while sitting in a barrel of apples).

Parallels with other works

Features of animation

Many of the drawn sequences in the cartoon are used multiple times. For example, the night pirate raid on the inn "Admiral Benbow" and the day attack of the fort (with the difference that Blind Pugh is now replaced by Silver) are repeated. The death of minor characters in the cartoon is shown conditionally. For the entire film, only Billy Bones, his cat, Blind Pew, the pirate who remained to guard the Hispaniola, and the fat pirate, defeated by Jim with a rocket, are really killed. After the death of Blind Pew and the big fat pirate that Jim defeated, five pirates on the shore mournfully bare their heads.

Two animation teams worked on the cartoon. One used the method of conventional hand-drawn animation, and the second - a "flat puppet". The difference in methods is that in classical rendering, the artist draws a mirror image of the character. As a result, Silver is alternately missing the left and then the right leg. The same error occurs in another film by David Cherkassky, "Doctor Aibolit", where the characters (One-eyed, the captain of the "Black Cuttlefish", a fat pirate) alternately lack different legs. The last two, starting from the fourth episode, are not at all one-legged.

Dossier on heroes

In the cartoon, when introducing pirates and other characters to the audience, the director's technique "dossier" from the television movie "Seventeen Moments of Spring" (1973) is used. It is noteworthy that the version written on the screen does not always coincide with the one spoken.

One can only sympathize with those who do not know who wrote "Treasure Island". Interesting stories about pirates, about the sea, about ships and travel - everything can be found in this book. On the other hand, one can envy someone who does not know who wrote "Treasure Island". The reader will discover for the first time an immense world, where there are many secrets and unexplored places. Even after reading this work to the holes in childhood, you can return to it from time to time again and again, discovering a new one that was previously unnoticed.

A little about creating a novel

Whoever wrote Treasure Island conceived this piece in the village of Bremor in the Aberdeenshire region. On a rainy day, the author viewed a map of an imaginary romantic island drawn by his twelve-year-old stepson Lloyd Osborne. Now the reader knows where "Treasure Island" was written: in the mountains of Scotland, in a village that stands on the River Dee.

Now over the door of the house there is a large one that says: “Here the author spent the summer of 1881 and wrote“ Treasure Island ”, his first great job". He decided that the story should be written for boys, so whoever wrote Treasure Island decided not to overload it with psychological subtleties. The writer managed to write 15 chapters in two weeks, and the inspiration left him. The writer was completely desperate, he had a contract with the publisher on hand! But after a while, he felt a surge of strength and quite easily, with pleasure, completed the work. After that, he began to change his place of residence. The author searched in vain for seven years in Britain for a climate suitable for his ill health.

A little about the writer

Of course, we know who wrote the novel "Treasure Island", but we will not mention this world famous name for now. Perhaps someone has read The Kidnapped or Ekaterin, the adventures of David Belfour, to whom the writer gave his mother's last name? This same master of fascinating novels is the one who wrote "Treasure Island". The author of this work is a multifaceted person. He is a poet, essayist, playwright, and creator of renowned novels. Scot by nationality, he was born in 1850 in Edinburgh and was the only and also sickly offspring of a wealthy family of naval engineer, lighthouse builder. In he studied law, however, like Walter Scott, he did not practice law. All his thoughts were attracted by literature. The one who wrote the book "Treasure Island" first visited America, traveled around Britain and, finally, settled in the Pacific. Here stood his house, which was called Vailima, while the natives themselves gave the name to the owner - the Narrator.

He was friends with local residents, took an active part in their fate and enjoyed a sincere reciprocal disposition. The author of "Treasure Island" died overnight, before dinner. Uncorking a bottle of wine, he suddenly asked his wife why his face and hands looked so strange, and suddenly collapsed. He was 44 when he passed away. On the day of his death, December 3, 1894, national mourning was declared on the island. The Council of Chiefs chose the highest and open mountain in Samoa.

There he was buried.

Pirate romance

It was originally called The Sea Chef, or Treasure Island: A Story for Boys. This work was first published in Young Folks magazine under the pseudonym Captain George North. The chapters of the novel were not accompanied by illustrations, and the reading public did not notice him. Rather, the readers did not like the new thing. Negative responses in letters went to the editorial office. But a separate edition, when "Treasure Island" was published, the author of the work signed with his own name - Robert Louis Stevenson.

This happened in 1883 and the success was undeniable. In 1885, Stevenson's book finally came out with illustrations. And people of different ages read to her. It is known that Prime Minister Gladstone could not tear himself away from the novel and read it deep into the night. Since then, this is the first book written by R.L. Stevenson, is included in the golden fund of English and world literature. What, in fact, is this fascinating novel in which the author, by the way, did not include a love affair? We will consider this below.

The beginning of the novel - "Admiral Benbow" tavern

A weathered sailor settled in a quiet tavern on the shore of a small bay.

He was very afraid of the one-legged man, and the main character of the work, Jim Hawkins, the son of an innkeeper, gave some money so that the boy would warn him if he saw a man with one leg. But a completely different sailor arrives, after visiting whom the guest of the inn suffered a blow, and he died. Jim and his mother want the money the old sea wolf owes them. They open his chest and find documents in it, which Jim takes for himself. The owners of the inn have to flee, as “friends” of their guest have appeared. They are looking for documents and, failing to find them, destroy the inn. But the robbers arrive and flee. Meanwhile, Jim goes to see Dr. Livesey and Squier Trelawney. To these respected people, he shows the papers of the old pirate, and in them it turns out detailed map the island where Flint hid his untold treasures. Livesey and Trelawney decide to equip an expedition after them.

On the sea

Squier Trelawney has hired the schooner Hispaniola and her crew. He acted so imprudently that everyone in the port soon knew that the ship was on its way to retrieve Flint's treasures. The team as a selection, with the exception of a few people, consisted of pirates and dark personalities, who were controlled by the cook, the one-legged John Silver.

This person is unusually intelligent, cunning, resourceful, charming and extremely adventurous. who became a cabin boy on "Hispaniola", is ready to listen to his stories for hours. By chance, at night, he overhears the conversation of the pirates. They are going to kill everyone and get to the coveted island themselves. Warned by Jim Trelawney, Livesey and the captain safely reach the island and release the crew. Pirates rush to search for treasures.

Whom did Jim meet on the island?

Jim hid in the boat along with the pirates. When they find him, he manages to escape and in the depths of the island he meets a white man overgrown with a completely tattered white man. This is Ben Gun. Previously, he was a pirate and knows the sinister Silver and his bloodthirsty cronies well. Ben Gun wants to meet Jim's companions.

Island Adventure

Meanwhile the captain, Squier Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, and the servants left the ship. While they are sailing to the shore, pirates shoot at them from the ship. The core flies very close, but no one is hurt. And although the skiff is sinking, everyone gets out to the shore. They find shelter behind a palisade. In this blockhouse, they raise the British from the ship, shell this shelter, and the others, who are on land, led by John Silver, demand that those in the fortress surrender. refuses them. Then the pirates begin to attack. They climb onto the palisade, and some climb over it. Hand-to-hand combat begins. The attack was repulsed, but all suffered losses.

Jim's Adventures at Sea

Jim decided to steal the Hispaniola. When he arrived on it, he found two pirates on it, who were very drunk. Together with Jim, they put the schooner in safe place... And they decided to kill Jim, but the teenager, realizing that they were very unreliable companions, kept on his guard.

Captured by pirates

At night, Jim returned to the fort and found himself in the den of his enemies. The pirates want to kill him and Silver too. But the crafty lame man spoke his teeth to them and convinced them not to touch anyone. It turns out that they now have a map of the island in their hands, and they will go to find Flint's treasures. Jim was led on a rope on his treasure hunt. They came to the place where the treasure should be, but they found an empty pit. The pirates blamed Silver for everything and wanted, but did not dare to kill him.

Return

At this time, shots rang out, they killed many. It was the team of Dr. Livesey and Squier Trelawney who attacked them. The treasures were safely loaded onto the ship. A one-legged cook was also taken, which, after returning to England, was to be handed over to the authorities. But the cunning man escaped, and our travelers returned safely to their homeland and honestly divided the treasures among themselves.

Such a wonderful book, fanned by the salty winds of the sea and full of adventure on land and at sea, was written by Robert Louis Stevenson.

It seems the most convenient way to anchor is from the south - over there, beyond that island. A? - Yes, yes, sir. This islet is called "Skeleton Island". One sailor from our ship knew all the names. That mountain is called the "Spyglass". There the pirates had an observation post. - Guys, you did a great job! And now, whoever wants, let him go ashore! - Hurray for Captain Smollett! Well, now everyone is on the island. - Hooray! - Hurray for Captain Smollett! - Listen, Hanks! Stay with the guys on the ship and keep an eye on the captain. And this is a great misfortune for us. - And the One-Legged? Is he there? - Silver? - Yes, yes, yes, his name was Silver! - He is our cook and is the leader of this whole gang of gangsters. - I will help you out, but only ... - I do not understand. - Only I would like to know if I will get at least a thousand pounds from the money that is already mine? - Of course, the squire is the most generous person in the world! - And he will take me home? - Of course, sir! Now tell us about yourself, sir. Oh sir, this is a terrible story! If you manage to get back to the ship, you will get a loaf of cheese like this! But - s-s-s-s! - I hear steps. They are pirates! We hide! - Ha ha ha! Our business is not important. First, where is Jim now? Second, it looks like the pirates won't let us out of here. Need to do something! Yeah, here's Jim! Who is he with? And here is Silver and the pirates. And what's that? Ha ha ha! Gentlemen! I have a great plan! (incoherent muttering) - One-two, one-two, one-two! Keep upstream! One-two, one-two! A gun! They load the cannon. What for? Oh, they will shoot! Add speed! One-two, one-two, one-two! One-two, one-two, one-two! One-two, one-two, one-two, one-two! One-two, one-two, one-two, one-two! (pirate whistles) Livesey, Smollett and Trelawney grab their weapons and escape! They have taken over the fort! - Ha ha ha! The log cabin is not visible from the ship. They're aiming at our flag. It must be lowered! - Lower the flag? Proud naval custom does not allow the flag to be lowered during a battle! Never! - Jim! Jim, take a look! See, your friends are there. - Not robbers? - Not. Silver would raise the Jolly Roger, the pirate banner. - Then, rather, to them! - Wait, wait! I have to see a doctor. Let one come! - Good. - Doctor, squire, captain! It's me - Jim! Hello! Doctor, I just met a man. His name is Ben Gunn. He has some news for you. - What is it? - Ha ha ha! White flag! “I bet they’re planning some kind of trick.” Attention! All to their places! One-two, one-two, one-two, one-two! Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! What do you want? - I want to conclude a contract with you. Do not shoot! - Good! Sit down, sir. - Well, thank you. - Tell me why you came? “We want to get the treasure, and we will get it. And you want to save your lives and you have every right to do so! Do you have a map? - Maybe! - I know - there is. Give us the card. - It's all? You, my dear, will not succeed in anything! - Then the guns will speak instead of me! - What are you saying? You are running aground, Silver. And all because you are too greedy! Now listen to a cautionary tale, sir! - Was a pirate greedy Billy. True, Billy was not liked. - Neither sailors, nor pirates, nor children, nor relatives! - Yes, and could not temper Billy Appetite crocodiles. - And so that Billy is not beaten? It just wasn't a day! - One, two, three, four, five! - You know, probably! - One, two, three, four, five! - Greed is bad! - One, two, three, four, five! - Let's say without a catch! - One, two, three, four, five! - Greed is bad! - Greed is bad! - Greed is bad! - Billy avoided women, did not meet, did not marry. - Because of greed, I never fell in love, did not suffer! - I didn’t want to pay piastres for sweets and asters. - I got an ulcer, asthma, And then I gave up the ends! - One, two, three, four, five! - Greedy century from century! - One, two, three, four, five! - Moral cripple! - One, two, three, four, five! - If you are greedy! - One, two, three, four, five! - You will ruin yourself! - You will ruin yourself! - You will ruin yourself! - That's all! And no Bill! Bill's greed killed him. - He lies at the bottom of the silt, in life he had little time. - Greed is worse than cholera! Greed is killing the filibuster! - Repeat with us, sir, This song is a chorus: - One-two-three-four-five! - You know, probably! - One, two, three, four, five! - Greed is bad! - One, two, three, four, five! - Let's say without a catch! - One, two, three, four, five! - Greed is bad! - Greed is bad! - Greed, I would say, is very bad! Yes Yes Yes! - Now you understand everything, Silver? If you come here alone, I will put you in shackles and give you a fair trial! If not, then remember - my name is Captain Smollet! And I will send everyone to the gallows! “In an hour, those of you who survived will envy the dead. - In places! Hmm ... Devil! It's been over an hour! It's getting boring! A! Here they go! Attention! Get ready! Fire! Forward! Hand-to-hand! Ah, well, hands up! - Yo-yo-yo! Yeh yeh! Yah-yah! - Not bad, not bad! Yet they got their ration for today! So, gentlemen, there were four of us against nineteen. Now, then, four against nine. Brilliantly! Gentlemen, congratulations on your victory! - Hooray! Hooray! - We are all participants in the regatta. Row, row ... - Row to ourselves! - For the glory of honor and gold: - Wine, beauties! - Etc. - Envy eats away at us, That someone will rake in more! - And consumption is increasing! - And production is lagging behind! - Dry your oars, sir, What the hell are you? Life is short and no matter how much you eat, you should not try in vain to eat for the future! - Dry the oars, sir! - Dry the oars, sir! - You should not try in vain to eat for the future! - Dry the oars, sir! - Dry the oars, sir! - Stuff the chests and belly! But all the same, in the end, the old woman will appear with a scythe And will rake the rowers to her! - Isn't it better to live easily and simply, So that no one curses you? - Get off, sir, dry the oars! - Dry the oars! Everything! - The final! - Ha ha ha! So it was you, Ben Gunn, who dug up the treasure? Wonderful! And carried to this cave? Brilliantly! Now the pirates are in our hands! I will calmly give them the map and the fort. Wonderful! Ha ha ha! - What the hell? Where did Dr. Livesey go? He just has a plan! And if he has a plan, then I will find something. I will steal the Hispaniola from the pirates! “You are a scoundrel, Israel Hanks! - I AM? - Yes, you! By thunder, it's Jim! - Who is there? Ah, this is Jim Gawkins, damn it! Come in, come in! Always glad to an old friend. Jim, well, since you wandered in here, then join us. - But, sir, how did you get here? Where is Dr. Livesey, Trelawney, Captain? Where did they go? - We made an agreement, got a fortress, and they left. Where are they now - I do not know. - Sir! Since I am in your captivity, do with me what you want. But, you know, I pulled the card out of Billy Bons' chest! It was I who overheard your conversation on the schooner and passed it on to the captain! I killed Israel Hanks and took the schooner away! Your case is lost! - Bleed him! - To the place! Who are you, John, to command here? Maybe the captain? - Johnny says right, bleed him! - And all and sundry are in command here! “Gentlemen who want to deal with me, let them come out. Let him take out your dagger. And I, though on a crutch, will see what color your giblets are. Before this tube goes out! Not too brave? So listen! Whoever touches Jim will deal with me! Are you going to tell me something? Plot

Comedy adaptation of the famous novel "Treasure Island" about the search for the treasure of the pirate Flint. Animated scenes are interspersed with musical numbers and game scenes filmed with the participation of actors and illustrating the events of the cartoon or concerning certain problems related to the pirates' lifestyle: for example, greed, smoking or alcoholism. At the same time, the manner of filming musical numbers and game episodes differs in different episodes: somewhere the image is colored, somewhere black and white. One play scene simulates a silent film using intertitles, and in the opening episode, live filming is combined with animation - there is only Billy Bones as a cartoon character.

Differences from the book

The replicas of the heroes of the film almost completely correspond to the replicas of the heroes of Stevenson. However, in order to achieve comic effect or to simplify the plot, what is happening does not fully correspond to the novel:

  • In the book, John Silver did not have a left leg, but in the cartoon, his right.
In the film, he rolled off a cliff in a barrel. In the same place, Pugh unfolds from his bosom a whole canvas with the state military awards awarded to him (that is, Pugh was once both a royal sailor and a privateer, unless, of course, he stole these medals).

Meanwhile, in the episode of the capture of the schooner by Jim Hands, it remains to hang between the masts of the Hispaniola, holding on to the ends of the rope cut by his own dagger. In addition, it stays there when the heroes head back.
  • In the book, Captain Smollett received two bullet wounds during a battle with pirates and was unable to move independently. In the cartoon, he was simply crushed by the wall of the fort that fell on him, but he was safe and sound.
  • In the book, Dr. Livesey performs a medical examination of the pirates long before they reach the place where the treasure was.
  • In the film, the treasures from the island were taken out completely, and in the book only gold was taken out. The rest (silver bullion and weapons) remained on the island.
The description is more suited to the Trelawney moneylender from the 1937 Soviet film. In the book, Trelawney is haughty and chatty, but brave and courageous. He is also the best shooter.
  • In Silver's "dossier" it is indicated that he is not married, like all the other cartoon characters, and in the book (in a letter from Squire Trelawney), on the contrary, the fact is mentioned that he is married to a black woman.

Parallels with other works

  • The episodes from the "dossier" of the film's characters in terms of content and visual and sound solution are a direct reference to the television movie "17 Moments of Spring".
  • The episode, where Trelawney uncorks and drinks rum with pleasure, refers to the Pepsi ad from the 1980s.

For the entire film, in addition to Billy Bons, the cat and Blind Pew, only one drawn character is killed for real - a fat man defeated by Jim with a rocket.

As a result, Silver is alternately missing left and right legs. The same mistake is found in another film by David Cherkassky, where the characters (sailors and pirates) lack different legs ("Doctor Aibolit").

Dossier on heroes

In the cartoon, when introducing pirates and other characters to the audience, the director's "dossier" technique from the television movie "Seventeen Moments of Spring" is used. It is noteworthy that the version written on the screen does not always coincide with the one spoken.

"Treasure Island"- Soviet animated feature film, created at the Ukrainian studio "Kievnauchfilm", based on the novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson. Consists of two parts: "Captain Flint's Map" and "Captain Flint's Treasures".

In 1992 it was released in the US under the title "The Return to Treasure Island" on video. The American version is 34 minutes shorter (no musical numbers). In 2006, the "Close-up" association released a restored version of the cartoon.

Comedy adaptation of the famous novel " Treasure Island»About the search for the treasure of the pirate Flint. The cartoon plot is interrupted by musical numbers shot with the participation of actors and illustrating the events of the cartoon or concerning certain problems related to the pirates' lifestyle (smoking, alcoholism). At the same time, the manner of filming differs in different episodes: somewhere the image is colored, somewhere black and white; one scene simulates a silent film using intertitles; in the opening episode, live footage is combined with animation.

Differences from the text of the novel

Interestingly, the lines of the characters in the film are almost identical to those of the heroes of Stevenson. However, sometimes, in order to achieve comic effect or simplify the plot, what happens does not fully correspond to the novel. Thus, in the book, Jim lived in the "Admiral Benbow" inn with his parents; his father dies, and his mother is taken to the village before the destruction of the inn. However, parents do not appear in the cartoon; Jim is helped by a one-eyed cat that Billy Bones brought with him, and Jim's mother is only mentioned in passing ("My mom says ..").

In the cartoon, Blind Pew is killed by rolling off a cliff in a barrel, while in the book he is trampled by the horses of soldiers who galloped to the Admiral Benbow to help.

In the book, Jim recognizes the Black Dog in the Spyglass, shouts, and he runs away, after which Silver pretends to be a nice guy, convincing Jim that they will catch him. In the cartoon, the Black Dog calmly drinks rum with other bums in a tavern, watches Jim's fight with a fat pirate, and then even becomes one of the sailors of the Hispaniola that Silver recruited.

Silver's "dossier" indicates that he is not married, like all the other cartoon characters, and in the book (in a letter from Squire Trelawney), on the contrary, the fact that he is married to a black woman is mentioned.

Jim promises Ben Gunn "this is a kind of cheese", although he does not ask for cheese, unlike the book.

Sometimes the exact adherence to the lines of the characters in the novel leads to contradictions with what is happening on the screen. For example, when the heroes, while still on the schooner, learn about the conspiracy, Captain Smollett, in response to Trelawney's question "How many people are loyal to us?" not a cartoon. Nevertheless, after the defense of the fort, he also says: “There were four of us against nineteen. Now there are four of us against nine. " In the film, the number of pirates cannot be counted (on average, their number in the frame, except for Silver, is four, or five with a small pirate in a yellow hoodie, less often - six; only once, when Trelawney, at the call of Captain Smollet, bravo frame, eleven pirates appear at once; already in the next scene, where they listen to the clatter of the cork, there are eight of them; before rushing to the model, they can be counted sixteen - it seems, the maximum number for the entire cartoon), while positive characters - in total four: the fifth - Ben Gunn - joined them later.

In addition, returning to the fort, which was surrendered to the pirates, Jim Hawkins says: "It was I who killed Israel Hands! .." (because in the book, Jim does kill Israel Hands). Meanwhile, in the scene of the capture of the schooner by Jim Hands, he does not die, but remains hanging between the masts of the Hispaniola, grabbing the ends of the rope cut by his own dagger - moreover, he remains there when the pirates are defeated and the heroes set off on their way back.

    Parallels with other works

    • Some moments of the cartoon are a frank parody of American cartoons and westerns (the moving door in the fight between Billy Bons and the Black Dog, the unbreakable window of Squire Trelawney, the similarity of the Spyglass tavern with the Wild West saloons, displayed, for example, in separate episodes of Tom and Jerry , when Squire Trelawn, Dr. Livesey and Captain Smollett escaped from the pirate ship, the pirates first fired with one cannonball, then with a bunch, and then they took out a machine-gun belt and began to shoot not from a cannon, but from a machine gun and the pirate who fired from the cannon began to shoot like Rambo) ...
    • The scene in which Jim meets Ben Gunn shows monkeys watching from a tree. This scene is copied from the Disney cartoon "The Jungle Book"
    • The first line of the song "Song about the dangers of smoking"("Columbus discovered America, he was a great sailor / But at the same time he taught the whole world to smoke tobacco") echoes the beginning of a courtyard romance (student song) "Copernicus worked for a century"("Columbus discovered America / A completely foreign country for us. / A fool, he'd better open a pub / On our street") dating back to the 19th century.

    Animation features

Many of the drawn sequences in the cartoon are used multiple times. For example, the night pirate raid on the inn "Admiral Benbow" and the day attack of the fort (with the difference that Blind Pugh is now replaced by Silver).

The death of minor characters in the cartoon is shown conditionally. During the entire film, in addition to Billy Bons and the cat, only two drawn characters die for real: Blind Pew and the fat man defeated by Jim with a rocket (after the death of both, five pirates on the shore mournfully bare their heads). Others tend to reappear. For example, a bearded man who fired from a "bomb" (a cannon "modified" for a machine gun) during the escape of the main characters from the ship, heated up and collapsed when they decided to cool him. But towards the end of the film, he is again present in the crowd of pirates. In the final scenes of the second episode in the crowd, you can also see a black-whisked pirate, from whom Israel Hands left only shoes as a gag a little earlier.

Two animation teams worked on the cartoon. One used the classic hand-drawn animation method, and the second used a "flat puppet". The difference in methods is that in classical rendering, the artist draws a mirror image of the character. As a result, Silver is alternately missing the left and then the right leg. The same mistake is found in other films by D. Cherkassky, where the characters (sailors and pirates) lack either different legs (Doctor Aibolit) or different eyes (The Adventures of Captain Vrungel).

    Dossier on heroes

In the cartoon, when introducing pirates and other characters to the audience, the "dossier" manner of the television movie "Seventeen Moments of Spring" is used:

    • Jim Hawkins- A very, very good boy. Polite, truthful, modest, kind. Listens to mom. Exercises every morning. The character is very soft.
    • Dr. Livesey- A very good and cheerful person. The character is sociable. Not married.
    • Sir Trelawney- Dumb, greedy, gluttonous, lazy, cowardly, arrogant. There is no character. Not married.
    • Captain Smollett- An old sailor and a soldier. He speaks the truth in the face, which is why he suffers. Bad character. Not married.
    • Billy Bones- He's the "Captain". Holder of the Treasure Island map. He drinks a lot and always has a cold. Bad temper. Not married.
    • John Silver- He's "Ham". He is "One-Legged". The most terrible pirate, but successfully pretends to be kind. The nature is secretive. Not married.
    • Black Dog Flint's friend. He hunts for the Treasure Island map. The nature is secretive. Not married.
    • Blind Pew- Also an old pirate. Flint's friend. Cheater. Greedy. For the sake of money, I'm ready for anything. Disgusting character. Not married.
    • Ben Gunn- As a child, I was a well-bred boy, but he began to play a toss, got in touch with pirates and rolled ... His character is soft. Not married.

All cartoon characters are not married. It is also noteworthy that often the text does not coincide with the spoken version. So, in the dubbing of Trelawney's dossier, instead of "coward" it is said that he is cowardly, and in the intertitle of the Musical Pause, Jim's name is missing, which the announcer however calls.

When Silver walks on a crutch at the Spyglass inn, when he rolls the crutch and opens the lock for it to go to the room where Jim overheard the conspiracy, his hat is not blue, but red. During Smolett's conversation with Silver before the attack, Alexander Smolett's boots change color several times.
    • Some pirates constantly change their appearance from frame to frame. During the conspiracy, Hands appears as a bearded sailor, but after that he appears already without a beard and in all red.
    • In the scene of the stopping of the horse-drawn carriage at " Spyglass", there is a spectacular trick - horses do not slow down, but slow down by inertia, and at the same time you can hear the creak of the brakes.
    • Also, the only characters named in the dossier by their first and last names were Silver, Hawkins, and Ben (Benjamin) Gunn. Alexander Smolett, John Trelawney and David Livesey are named instead of a name by rank or profession.
