From the village to the cultural center
According to legend, Vorobyovy Gory got its name from the name of the priest Vorobya who owned these territories, who parted with them in favor of the Grand Duchess Sofia Vitovtovna. During the existence of the USSR, Vorobyovy Gory has radically changed. At the time of the foundation of the university (1949), the wooded bank of the Moskva River was inhabited mainly by moose, wild boars and hares (which, by the way, were regularly seen by students back in the 80s). In 1953, when the university was completed, the design of the observation deck was completed. From that moment on, the edge of the Sparrow Hills became a traditional place of national festivities, and not only the residence of kings and princes.
What to see
It is better to start a walk in Vorobyovy Gory from the building of Moscow State University (10 minutes walk from the Universitet metro station or 3 minutes by minibus). Walking along the Alley of Scientists, you will come to the observation deck, from which Karamzin, Lermontov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Gorky, Blok, Bulgakov admired, and although the writers of the past saw a completely different city, you will get no less pleasure. Sparrow Hills is the main observation deck of Moscow. In fact, these are not mountains, but a river bank, indented by cliffs and landslides. Since September 1, 1900, the Rublevsky water supply system began to be erected here. The city grew, there was not enough water, and then the water supply of the city went from the Moskva River precisely through the Vorobyov reservoirs.
This prompted the idea of building a park. The idea was in the air, but nothing went beyond vague dreams. Muscovites came here for a walk - to drink tea, to listen to gypsies. In 1924, there were peasant gardens with tables and benches dug into the ground, with handwritten signs "Wave", "Rendezvous of Friends", "Eldorado", waiting for their guests.
Since 1953, the era of Moscow State University begins, a site appears with a magnificent panorama of Moscow and a ski jump. A metro station is being built here, but it is extremely unsuccessful - in order not to disrupt the deadline, the builders add salt to the concrete, which leads to an early destruction of the structure. After some time, the station for a long time becomes a blind spot on the map of the Moscow metro, leaving an abandoned escalator vault for the edification of the hurry.
In the restaurant, located on the observation deck, Chaliapin often sang. In winter they went skiing and sledging, and in summer they could ride a motor boat or a steamer.
The Soviet government planned to build here whole city- a stadium for 40,000 seats, a park, an open theater. All types of transport, including the plane, were going to be brought to the latter. But for some reason they did not embody this idea.

To the right, behind the famous house, there is a skyscraper on Kudrinskaya Square, better known as the house on Barrikadnaya. A little more to the right and below in the photo is a white candle from the bell tower of the Novodevichy Convent. The next visible vertical line is the powerful skyscraper of the Foreign Ministry building. In the center, behind the large Luzhniki sports arena, rise the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower of the Moscow Kremlin. True, it is already quite difficult to distinguish the bell tower at night. Another visible Stalin skyscraper from Vorobyovy Gory is a skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya embankment, it is slightly to the right of the stadium. On the right side of the photo is the dimly illuminated Shukhov Tower, known for its New Year's "Blue" lights and the already mentioned building of the Academy of Sciences. Not far from the observation deck is the Church of the Life-Giving Trinity on the Sparrow Hills. The history of this church is connected with the village of Vorobyovo, which existed here in the middle of the 15th century, after which this area was named. The church miraculously managed to avoid the fate of many other Moscow churches during the Soviet era. To this day, she continues to delight everyone with the bell ringing, in the evenings spreading over the slopes of the Moskva River.

This skyscraper was erected at the suggestion of Stalin in 1949-1953 by architects B. M. Iofan, L. V. Rudnev, S. E. Chernyshev, P. V. Abrosimov, A. F. Khryakov and V. N. Nasonov.
At the time of its construction, the building was the tallest in Moscow; its height, together with the spire, is 240 meters.
