Do large bags need to be checked in with carry-on luggage?

Large bags that meet the carry-on requirements may still need to be checked in for free at the gate. This is done due to the limited volume of overhead luggage compartments in the cabin. Small bags can be stowed under the seat in front.

What are the baggage rules at KLM?

Luggage for children.
Infants under 2 years of age who fly in the arms of their parents. By child ticket parents can carry 1 piece of luggage measuring 55x35x25 cm and weighing 10 kg.

Children flying in their own seat have the same baggage rights as adult passengers.

Payment for excess baggage.
The amount of payment for excess baggage depends on the flight and flight distance,
number of seats, weight of luggage and are a fixed value.

The weight of one piece of excess baggage cannot be more than 23 kg and more than 158 cm in size; in case of excess weight and dimensions, you will need to pay an additional fee.

Baggage of transfer (transit) passengers.
The baggage of a passenger flying with a transfer will be checked in until the final point and will not need to be checked in at the stopping point, except in special cases when:

- if the passenger makes a transit stop at a transfer point, or continues the second part of the journey by bus or train.

It is necessary to reserve a place to transport skis, snowboards, bicycles, scuba gear, kayaks, and canoes more than 48 hours in advance. Sports equipment is carried for a fee.

The amount of the fee depends on the flight, direction and size of the equipment transported, and may vary in size even for round-trip flights. For example, to transport a bicycle within France you need to pay 50 euros, but taking the same bicycle with you to India will cost 100 euros.

Transportation of animals.
Pets fly in the arms of their owners in the cabin or in cargo compartment as checked baggage. For transporting an animal, you need to pay a fixed fee, which depends on the weight of the pet along with the cage and the flight distance.

For example, for transporting a cat in a container weighing 6 kg within France you need to pay 20 euros, and for transporting the same cat to Brazil you need to pay 200 euros.

Note. For transfer flights, if the animal is transported in the cargo hold, and the transfer in Amsterdam from one flight to another lasts more than 2 hours, you will need to pay an additional fee of 150 euros.

When flying to America or Canada, animals are transported only in the luggage compartment, where the temperature and pressure are the same as in the cabin.

Transportation musical instruments, household appliances.
Sweet instruments and bread machines can be carried as hand luggage in the cabin or luggage compartment for fragile luggage. For bulky or especially valuable ones, you can buy an additional ticket and your treasure will fly next to you in the next seat.

Excess baggage at a discount

However, you can also carry one piece of excess baggage at an attractive fixed price. Check in excess baggage during online check-in and receive a discount of 20% or more on the amount of excess baggage you would have to pay at the airport!

You can arrange your excess baggage allowance online if your flight is operated by KLM. If you are traveling from Australia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany (Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt), Hungary, Ireland or the United States (except Chicago, San Francisco or Washington DC), you can only check additional baggage at the airport. This means that the discount will not apply to your luggage.

Travel to/from the USA

You may not lock your luggage as the United States authorities require that your luggage be checked for explosives.

Are you traveling to the US and then connecting to a local flight to the US or Canada? In this case, you must receive your luggage when transferring to connecting flight and check it in again at the check-in and baggage drop-off point.

Baggage for children under 2 years of age

One piece of carry-on baggage containing essential child care items weighing no more than 10 kg (22 lbs) and measuring no more than 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.5 x 13.5 x 10 inches).

If you have booked a child seat, you can bring your own child seat with you on board the aircraft. This seat must fit between the arms of an aircraft seat and must not exceed 42 cm (16.5 inches) in width. Only child seats that are free from visible defects and that bear the seal of approval for use by the European Union or any other government agency may be used on board aircraft.

Baggage and transfers

There are a few exceptions to this rule:

• If you purchased two or more tickets from different airlines with different rules
• If you are connecting from a France or KLM flight to a domestic flight, such as a domestic flight in the USA

• If the transfer time to the next flight is more than 24 hours
• If your travel route includes travel by bus or train
