The An-3 biplane is, in fact, a modernized An-2 aircraft.

For the place of the ASh-62IR piston engine, the An-3 uses a more powerful turboprop TVD-20 engine, designed by the Omsk Engine-Building Design Bureau.

The single-engine An-3 is a biplane with fixed landing gear and a TVD-20 engine. The aircraft is equipped with an AB-17 three-blade reverse propeller. Fuel tanks are located in the upper wing of the aircraft. Optionally, the aircraft can be equipped with modern satellite navigation equipment, multifunctional GPS GLONASS navigation receiver CH-3301 and emergency-rescue radio beacon ARM-406 operating through the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system.

Work on the project of the An-3 aircraft with a turboprop engine began in 1967. It was originally planned to use the TVD-10 engine on the aircraft. But the project with this engine was not implemented due to a reduction in production at the Omsk Motor-Building Design Bureau.

Work on the An-3 engine project continued in 1978. The new engine was designated TBD-20-01. After the development of the engine and its installation on the aircraft, factory tests of the machine began.

The first flight of the An-3 with the TBD-20 engine took place on May 13, 1980. Pilots Gorbik and Ignatenko were the first to test this aircraft in the air. State tests of the aircraft began only in 1986. One of the reasons for such a long period for the start of state tests was the difficulties in organizing the production of TVD-20 engines. By the beginning of 1991, the entire complex of ground and air tests was carried out and the aircraft received a permit for operation. But due to the events of the early nineties and the subsequent economic decline, the An-3 was never put into production.

Already only in the summer of 1997, at the Antonov ANTK enterprise in Kiev, work on the production of the An-3 aircraft was resumed. The main attention was paid to the production of the transport modification of the An-3T aircraft, capable of carrying up to 1900 kilograms of cargo. At the beginning of 1998, the Omsk Production Association "Polet" produced the first An-3T. The first flight of this model took place on February 19, 1998. After passing all the tests, on November 21, 2000, the An-3T serial transport biplane was handed over to the now closed Zapolyarye airline, located in the city of Norilsk.

An-3TBK is an aircraft designed for business passengers. This version has double rectangular windows. It has a wardrobe and a luggage compartment.

An-3T-10 - transport and landing modification. This version of the aircraft is used to transport and drop 10-12 parachutists.

An-3T-08 - this version is used for patrolling and reconnaissance in forestry.

An-3T-07 is a transport and passenger version capable of carrying up to 12 people.

From the moment of development, the An-3 aircraft was produced in a small series at the Polyot production association, located in Omsk, from 2000 to 2009. After that, the production of the aircraft was suspended. At the beginning of 2012, the production of the An-3-100, which is an updated version of the An-3 biplane, was launched at the Kiev state enterprise "Antonov". Compared to its predecessor, the new An-3-100 has a lighter design and will be equipped with upgraded radio and satellite navigation equipment.
