Can I take food on the plane? Carry-on baggage on the plane.

Many of us fly on airplanes on vacation, a business trip to get a job, and so on. If you do not fly for a long time, problems with food do not arise.

And if the flight is long and even not with one but several transfers? And if you fly on budget airlines, where you will have to pay for tea or juice. And even if you wait for the plane for several hours during the transfer, and the prices in the airport buffets are incredible.

Then the question arises: - "Is it possible to take food on the plane?"

I think this question interests not only me, but it will be useful to others as well.

Carry-on baggage on the plane

Hand luggage- this is your unchecked baggage, things that you take with you on the plane.

Holders of an economy class ticket can take 1 piece of hand luggage on board, business and first class passengers each.

The allowed carry-on baggage size is usually 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm or 115 cm in the sum of 3 measurements.

The allowable weight depends on the airline, aircraft type and route, below are the allowable weights for one piece of carry-on baggage of some airlines:

Baggage, the dimensions and weight of which do not fit into these standards, are transported in the cargo hold.

Many have already heard that on carry-on liquids certain restrictions apply.

Liquids (including creams, aerosols and gels) may only be carried in carry-on baggage in accordance with the following requirements:

  • The volume of containers containing liquids should not exceed 100 ml. (i.e. even if the liquid itself is only 50 ml., the container in which it is located should hold no more than 100 ml. To prevent controversial situations with the security service, it is recommended to use containers for liquid (tubes, jars, etc.) with indicating their volume).
  • All containers should be stored in one transparent, resealable plastic bag. The total capacity should not exceed 1 liter. (i.e. you can take 10 bottles of no more than 100 ml each)

You can read about special containers and bags for packing liquids in our post on baggage packing.

Medicines (provided that you have a prescription or a doctor's note with you) and baby food that you may need during the flight do not need to be placed in the plastic wrap, but must be presented to the security service. Be prepared to be asked to open the baby food jars and taste the contents.

Items purchased in Duty Free

When traveling within the EU: You can purchase liquids (spirits, perfumes, etc.) at Duty Free or on board all European airlines. The liquids you purchase will be packaged and sealed. If you are flying with a transfer, the sealed liquids must not be opened until you arrive at your final destination.

If your journey starts outside the EU and then you transfer to a connecting flight at an airport in the EU, you can also carry liquids and gels purchased in Duty Free outside the EU.

Note! The authorities of some states, for example the Netherlands, prohibit passengers, when transferring to a connecting flight at an airport in the EU, from transporting liquids purchased from duty-free shops outside the EU.

It is allowed to carry liquids bought in Duty Free shops of the following airports in hand luggage:

  • All airports in Canada
  • All US airports
  • Kuala Lumpur
  • Singapore
  • Croatia: Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Zadar or Zagreb

Items not allowed in carry-on baggage.

These items include:

  • Liquids, excluding liquids in small quantities and packaged according to the rules specified above
  • Animal products (dairy products, meat, cheese). This requirement does not apply to passengers departing from Switzerland, Andorra, Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, San Marino and the Faroe Islands.
  • Weapon
  • Blunt and pointed objects
  • Explosive, flammable, chemical and toxic substances

You can find a complete list in our brochure.

In addition to carry-on baggage, you can take it with you on the plane the following items:

  • handbag (including laptop bag);
  • coat, shawl, plaid or umbrella;
  • a laptop, a camera (a tripod is usually asked to be checked in, but some airlines allow it to be taken in hand luggage if its length does not exceed 60 cm when folded) or binoculars. You can read more about transporting a laptop on an airplane in the post "Can I take a laptop on an airplane?" ;
  • a reasonable number of prints to read during the flight;
  • baby carrycot / chair or stroller up to 10 kg.
  • crutches or other necessary orthopedic devices

If you plan to take food with you in your hand luggage, then read on "Can I take food on the plane?"

Can I take food on the plane?

Perhaps not everyone knows about this, but you can take food on board the plane, and not only the one that was bought in Duty Free before boarding.

Knowledgeable tourists take with them not only chocolates and cookies, but also sandwiches and other homemade products. There are only restrictions on drinks, but they are already carried by the flight attendants, unless you are flying on a budget airline, where you will have to pay for tea or juice.

It is advisable to take with you foods rich in protein: chicken, beef, cheese, nuts. Choose products that do not have a strong odor that will not crumble or deteriorate during a few hours of flight and waiting at the airport.

For a snack, a mixture of nuts and dried fruits, sandwiches or salad in a container is perfect.

Avoid strong-smelling and gas-forming foods (onions, garlic, fish, beans, broccoli) and fatty foods. You can ruin your stay on the plane, not only for yourself, but also for numerous neighbors.

Remember that liquids, including gels, are prohibited for carriage. Except when they comply with the standards:

  • The volume of containers should not exceed 100 ml.
  • All containers should be stored in one transparent, resealable plastic bag. The total capacity should not exceed 1 liter.
  • Each passenger is entitled to carry only one such package.
  • The packaging of containers containing liquids must be presented separately at the security control desk.

What products are liquids and gels? The list is not very long, it includes: yogurt, sauces (for example, for salad), cottage cheese, peanut butter, jam, jam, jelly, soup. But not everything is so simple, no one will definitely answer the question of whether you can take a pie with a creamy filling or a cake with you. This will depend on the decision of the security service.

All products must be carefully packed in transparent bags or containers so that security personnel can see what is inside.

And one more little advice, before you spread the food you brought with you on the table, cover it with a napkin. You do not know who sat here before you and how long ago you wiped it.

What food is worth taking on the plane

Food on planes is often poor. Heartburn-inducing chicken macaroni and an insanely sweet chocolate waffle as a dessert are unlikely to whet your appetite, as you can only eat when you're hungry. Meanwhile, putting together a bag of tasty and healthy food with you on the road will not be the slightest difficulty, the main thing is to have a clear plan. And then you don't have to think about whether food is included in the cost of the flight, and not worry about its quality. The same supply can be saved on long flights, when a considerable time passes between two meals. So, what can you use with pleasure and comfort during the flight?

Fruits
Fruit is perfect both as a dessert and as a way to quench your thirst. The main thing is not to take with you those that you want to clean. Dirty hands, splashes on clothes, and extra weight in the form of skins are not at all what you need. It is best to take seedless grapes or any other berries with you, as well as apples. All this must first be washed, dried and it is best to put it not in a bag, but in a plastic container with a lid.

Mix of nuts and dried fruits
Of course, there are ready-made mixes in stores, but usually they will probably contain something that you do not like at all and will eventually remain at the bottom of the can, so it is better to prepare dry rations from what you love. For example: mix a glass of fried seeds without husks, a glass of dried apricots or prunes, half a glass of nuts (almonds or hazelnuts) and a couple of handfuls of dried cherries. All this, again, is more convenient to place in a plastic container, since plastic bags tend to open, tear and crumble at the most inopportune moment. And it is inconvenient to put them on the table.

Small carrots
This tasty and easy-to-transport root vegetable is often forgotten, and in vain. Firstly, it is very good for them to crunch during takeoff or landing, because it perfectly saves you from blocking your ears. Secondly, carrots satisfy the desire to constantly chew something out of boredom, without harm to the figure. And, finally, if you take some sauce with you, you can perfectly dip the root vegetable into it and get almost a restaurant snack. The main thing is to wash the carrots in advance. By the way, in the season, small cucumbers will replace carrots, the main thing is to find tasty and fresh ones.

Sauces
Not necessary, but people who are accustomed to using sauces, bring one or two sauces with you. These may be small boxes from McDonald's. But remember that the transport of liquids on the plane is limited.

Crackers
Grabbed crackers, breadsticks, or FinnCrisp are great snacks. The main thing is to choose an option that is not very crumbling.

Muesli bars
If you don't have time to collect food for the trip at all, take a variety of granola and dried fruit bars with you. A great variety of types of such bars are sold, and you can buy them not only in a supermarket, but also in almost any pharmacy.

Inedible items
Of course, you should definitely take wet and dry wipes with you, which will definitely be used. If there are shops in the sterile area, you can also take an empty travel water bottle with you and fill it with your own mix, the ingredients for which can be purchased after security checks.

Advice

And many more on the plane really want to drink, but you can't take a lot of liquids, you can take liquid with you in your luggage. But you can take juicy fruits and an empty bottle.
And fly with a bottle, which you have to fill at the airport, after all the checks. You can ask the stewarts for water. Dehydration is terrible, so the more you drink the better.
Apples-bananas can be taken.

Advice - take dried fruits, nuts (preferably not peanuts, so that your neighbor's Quincke's edema does not start :() Take sandwiches, which are individually packed, with chicken, regular, non-stinking cheese.

And don't forget to bring your empty trash bag!
