What you can't take with you on the plane: a detailed list

Are you on an airplane flight? Then it is better to study in advance the rules for transporting baggage that apply to your airline. Each carrier has its own requirements for carry-on baggage and baggage, but there are general rules. If you familiarize yourself with them, you will save time, get rid of conflicts with security personnel, and even keep your belongings from confiscation.

What you can't take on a plane, even in a suitcase

Passengers are not allowed to take the following items either on board or into the hold:

  • flammable and explosive substances;
  • poisonous chemicals.

If you are flying to America, please note that lighters cannot be taken even in checked baggage. We'll have to buy a new one upon arrival.
Weapons are allowed in checked baggage, but the passenger will need to inform Customs in advance. If the weapon is registered, there will be no problems with the inspection. This applies, in particular, to biathlon athletes, whose sports equipment is included in the category of weapons.

List of items that cannot be taken in carry-on baggage

What is prohibited in carry-on baggage on the plane

  • Liquids must not be taken on board the aircraft if they are packed in containers with a volume of more than 100 ml. Even opened and started drinks will be confiscated from you. However, it is allowed to carry liquids purchased from the DutyFree store.
  • Products in carry-on baggage are prohibited, even if packed in jars. Canned food is also not allowed on board the aircraft. So it's better to put red caviar in your luggage. From products you can take chocolates, sandwiches, cookies, nuts, etc. Vegetables and fruits in hand luggage are allowed in the amount necessary for a snack. Nobody forbade sweets in hand luggage either.
  • The main thing is to avoid gas-forming and strong-smelling foods. If you take yoghurts, jams or other products packed in containers with a volume of no more than 100 ml, present them to the security service at the time of control. Exception! At the moment, the rules of most of the world's airlines allow passengers to take baby food in their carry-on baggage.
  • Stabbing and cutting objects (any!). Do not take knives, nail scissors, other scissors, nail files, screwdrivers or other tools on board. Even carefully packed souvenir knives will not be allowed to carry in your hand luggage. In order not to lose a valuable purchase, put it in a suitcase.
  • Weapon or imitation. Even if your son decided to take a toy pistol to the plane, the police will certainly confiscate it. So it's better to choose another toy.
  • Cosmetics - creams, lotions, perfumes, sprays, oils, shower gels and other cosmetics are prohibited in carry-on baggage. You cannot even carry open shampoo in your carry-on baggage. Put all cosmetic products in your luggage at once, except for those that you bought in Duty Free.
  • Pressurized cans (deodorant, shaving foam).
  • Toothpaste. You will have to endure several hours without brushing your teeth. Take your gum with you.
  • Lighters are also strictly prohibited on board.
  • Pets: if you are flying with a pet, you will need to send it to the luggage compartment in a special box for transportation during the flight and pay the fee.

Alcohol in carry-on baggage

Passengers are allowed to take alcohol purchased in Duty Free shops and packed in a special container in their carry-on baggage. One passenger can take on board up to 5 liters of alcoholic drinks from 24 to 70%. The container volume should not exceed 5 liters.

Medicines on board

Medicines are taken on a trip by everyone who cares about their health. Medicines can be brought in by packing them in plastic containers and presenting them to security personnel when passing through security. Prohibited medicines in carry-on baggage, which may be required by sick people, are separately discussed. In this case, the passenger will need to present a written confirmation from the attending physician. In the document, the doctor will have to write that without a specific drug there will be a threat to human health. For example, people with diabetes will be allowed to take insulin syringes.

Sport equipment

Sports equipment may not be carried on board. If you need to take the equipment with you, you will need to check it in your checked baggage, after informing the airline about it. Some carriers offer special rates for the transport of sports equipment.

Musical instruments

Many people think that it is impossible to take musical instruments in hand luggage. But small items that can be placed in the small luggage compartment can be taken even without additional collection. Large musical instruments that cannot be carried in the hold must be transported in a separate seat next to the owner. You will also have to buy a ticket for the instrument; some airlines offer a discount on it.

Carry-on baggage dimensions

Pay attention to the requirements of your airline for the size of hand luggage. This is especially strictly regulated on low-cost airlines. For example, if you are allowed to take a bag of a certain size, then nothing else should be in your hands: neither a jacket, nor a camera.
We wish you a pleasant flight! And do not forget to take a jacket with you: after takeoff, air conditioners start working on the plane, it gets cool, and there are often not enough blankets.
