In the early 1960s, there was a need to provide Karelia with air communication with other regions of the Soviet Union. The authorities decided not to build a new civil airfield, but to use the existing one in Besovtsy. Thus, in 1964, it was reorganized into the jointly based Petrozavodsk-2 airport. Along the way, a separate Petrozavodsk civil aviation squadron was formed. In 1990, it acquired international status.

Time for a change

The drastic change in the political and economic situation has brought about significant adjustments to the operation of the airport in Petrozavodsk. In 1994, in the wake of the general wave of privatization, the airline was corporatized and transformed into the State Aviation Enterprise "Airport Besovets".

However, the best times for the airfield are over. A protracted period of stagnation began, caused by the rise in the cost of flights and a sharp decline in demand for air services from the population. By 2001, the enterprise was in a pre-bankruptcy state, the authorities introduced external management.

In 2003 the company was transferred to the Kalevala Group of Companies. The new owner is investing heavily in modernizing the facility. A new passenger terminal was built in 2004. The 2008 economic crisis hit the airport hard. The owner was unable to provide the necessary conditions for the operation of the airfield, and the company was deprived of its license. Flights were terminated.

This situation was unacceptable - the republic was deprived of air communication with the regions of Russia. The authorities of Karelia have found funds and bought the airport. 47 million rubles were spent on this.

In 2009, a lot of work was done to modernize the technical equipment. In particular, the latest lighting equipment was installed, which made it possible to receive aircraft at any time of the day. A plan has been developed for the construction of a new modern airport terminal and improvement of the adjacent territory.
