Here is one of the legends that you can hear about this place. Long ago, young men from Manarola went to fetch water from the stream that ran near Riomaggiore. As usual in ancient legends, the inhabitants were at enmity with each other. One of the young men met a beautiful girl from Riomaggiore by the stream, and they, falling in love with each other, began to secretly meet. The girl's brothers found out about this and locked her in the house. She got out and ran to her lover, but their meeting ended tragically: they both slipped and fell off the rocks into the sea. Since then, the residents have stopped strife and live in peace, and the road was named Via del Amor. The 2011 flood severely damaged the Cinque Terre, but almost all of its effects have now been reversed. Unfortunately, landslides and rockfalls often lead to the fact that the road is closed.
