Carry-on baggage international flights. Hand luggage

It’s just pointless to talk about it. V family trip you cannot do without suitcases and bulky bags, baby carriages and other things necessary for a small passenger, most of which are sent on a flight to luggage compartment aircraft.

And so that everything goes smoothly at the airport, it is important to know in advance how many things can be carried for free, what are the permitted dimensions and weight of baggage for the purchased ticket in the selected airline, how to organize the transportation of your belongings correctly, how to transport non-standard large things, how to deal with some emergency situations , for example, if you suddenly lost your luggage or found that there are too many things in your luggage. And today is just about that.

General baggage rules

Air carriers around the world are extremely concerned about flight safety. And for this, strict standards and rules for transportation are being developed. Among the priority norms is the calculation of the maximum weight of baggage per passenger. Because being overweight on board is a direct threat to the safety of passengers.

All things with which a passenger goes on a flight can be called with one word "baggage", which is conventionally subdivided into:

  • checked baggage - bags, suitcases, boxes and other items with which the passenger leaves at check-in at the airport, entrusting the care of them to his employees;
  • carry-on luggage - bags, packages and suitcases that will be with him until the end of the flight. Previously, a special tag was attached to them. Under the new rules, no;
  • personal belongings that are transported free of charge in excess of the established one (a complete list can be found in clause 135 of the Russian Aviation Regulations (FAR)).

Air travel around the world is highly regulated. All carrier airlines and passengers are required to comply with the established Rules. For Russian airlines with regard to the carriage of passengers and baggage, various regulations and rules air transportation, which were amended in accordance with Law No. 409 of October 5, 2017.

According to the law on non-refundable tickets, not only have some norms for the carriage of hand luggage and baggage changed, but Russian airlines have the opportunity to offer passengers cheaper tickets without baggage space, that is, without free baggage, independently determining for which fare to provide baggage.

However, for passengers with tickets that include baggage, a single free baggage allowance has been introduced. It is impossible to reduce this rate. And if the carrier wants to show generosity and increase the allowed limit upwards - please. This is not forbidden.

Each carrier has the right to change and establish its own standards, without going beyond the established general rules and without worsening the conditions of passenger service. The maximum value may be different (it depends on the rules of the carrier, the type of aircraft, the duration and direction of the flight, the cost of the ticket and the class of service), but its maximum weight is limited - no more than 30 kg (previously it was 32 kg) for one seat. Foreign airlines have their own rules that correspond to the laws of their countries.

Each specific situation has its own nuances. In order not to be mistaken, be sure to specify the weight and dimensions of your free baggage, the parameters of which are indicated for a specific fare in the ticket. This information can also be found on the carrier's website.

How much do you have to pay for the overweight?

Sometimes it happens that at the counter at the airport it suddenly turns out that the suitcase weighs more than indicated in the purchased ticket, and the free baggage allowance is exceeded in some way: by weight, size or number of seats (depending on the rules of the company). There is nothing you can do about it, in most cases you will have to pay extra for an advantage.

The amount of additional payments is different: from 2,500 to 7,500 rubles for domestic flights and up to 200 euros - for international flights. The amount depends on the carrier's policy (some of them turn a blind eye to a small overload of 1-2 kg, while others may issue an invoice in full) and how big the overweight is.

The following restrictions are most often encountered in airlines:

  • for economy class - 1 free seat (suitcase / bag) no more than 20-23 kg;
  • for business class - 2 pieces of baggage (each no more than 30-32 kg);
  • by the sum of three dimensions (length, width, height), the luggage must not exceed 158 cm (or 203 cm).

Sometimes by expensive ticket It is more profitable to fly with heavy luggage than in Economy class with an excess weight surcharge.

Within the maximum permitted limit (within international airports- this is 1 piece of baggage no more than 32 kg, according to Russian rules - no more than 30 kg) it is allowed to carry baggage in excess of the free allowance. In this case, you will have to pay extra at the carrier's rates for excess baggage (that is, for baggage that is not included in the cost of the purchased fare ticket) and agree with the carrier for the transportation of such baggage.

As for low-cost airlines, they often do not have free luggage. For example, for the Russian one, all baggage at the standard non-refundable tariff is paid, and its cost depends on the weight and number of pieces. In the salon, however, it is allowed to take any safe items (regardless of their weight and any lists) that can be squeezed through a measuring frame with dimensions of 36 x 30 x 27 cm.

How to transport oversized and heavy baggage?

Heavy luggage - according to Russian rules, it is anything that exceeds the weight of one piece of 30 kg.

Oversized baggage is an excess of the baggage allowance in size, that is, 1 piece of more than 203 cm (or 158 cm, as in most airlines). When specifying the size of a packed suitcase (bag), wheels, handles, and pockets are taken into account.

For excess weight, as well as for oversizing, you will have to pay.

Depending on the maximum weight limit set in a particular company (in the order of the Ministry of Transport, the maximum weight of baggage allowed for carriage is 50 kg) and size (excess in the amount of 270-320 cm), such heavy and bulky baggage may not be accepted for carriage even for money.

What should the passenger do in this case? Such items can be sent (of course, by agreeing this with the carrier) along the route as unaccompanied cargo, which is accepted at the cargo terminal in the company's cargo service. You can get your luggage at the airport of arrival using the air waybill received during baggage registration.

What if you have non-standard baggage?

Most often these are large, unusual and heavy things: musical instruments, snowboard and surfboards, skis, household appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, TVs, vacuum cleaners) and more. For the carriage of such baggage, airlines prescribe special conditions, indicating the maximum size, weight and contents of one set of baggage, which it is advisable to familiarize yourself with in advance.

Non-standard baggage (most often sports equipment) can be transported free of charge as an addition to the rest of the baggage or as regular baggage within the normal range of the ticket fare or for an additional charge. Special conditions may apply, such as no size restrictions that apply to regular baggage. For some types of such non-standard baggage, a flat fee is set.

Items listed in clause 136 of the Federal Aviation Rules (baby carriages, walkers, wheelchairs and other luggage) are carried free of charge in checked baggage, if it is impossible to place them in the cabin without violating the comfortable and safe conditions for passengers.

Lucky for those who travel with skis and snowboards. Many carriers (for example, Aeroflot from November 1 to May 15) allow passengers to carry ski equipment and snowboards free of charge in addition to their main baggage or at no additional charge if they fit into the free weight allowance (often without size restrictions).

But, again, you need to double-check everything for reliability. For example, airlines with low fares and low-cost airlines often lack the option of free transportation of sports equipment. And in some, the permissible weight (usually 20-23 kg) is reduced to 10 kg.

On some destinations (usually on long flights), sometimes there are own rules, which allow at certain periods to transport sets of equipment of a certain weight for surfing and diving at no additional charge.

You can also bring golf bags, hockey sticks, fishing rods, musical instruments for free, if the established norms are not violated. But if the weight, size, number of seats exceed free rate, then all of the above will go on the flight only with an additional payment.

The passenger must discuss the transportation of such cargo with the carrier company in advance (36 hours before departure). Because it may happen that the airline does not have the conditions for carrying such non-standard baggage (the size of the cargo does not correspond to the type of aircraft, or baggage of this size simply cannot be placed on board). Without prior agreement, you may simply not accept it due to lack of free space.

If it turns out that it is not possible to organize the transportation of non-standard and heavy baggage, then it may be possible to send it as regular baggage with payment for exceeding the free norm.

Fragile baggage transportation

Very often, passengers of airliners have questions about what to do with fragile and fragile things. It is safest (if possible) to carry such luggage in the cabin, registering it as hand luggage. If this is not possible, baggage is checked in at check-in with an announcement that it requires particularly careful transportation. If such an option is provided by this airline, a special sticker is glued to the cargo and things are delivered on board manually, and not in the total mass of suitcases on the tape.

Experienced travelers, who often fly with non-standard luggage, argue that, although there are many different nuances, if the rules of the carrier are strictly followed, everything usually goes on as usual.

Advice: when transporting expensive and fragile items, it is advisable to insure the baggage and send it with a declared value (you will have to pay for this service).

And, of course, there is a list of items that will not be allowed in your baggage under any pretext for security reasons.

What is prohibited for carriage on an airplane?

Most airlines cannot carry:

  • anything that easily ignites and explodes (including firecrackers, sparklers, flares, gunpowder, cartridges, matches, gasoline and gas lighters, solvents, paints, gasoline, acetone, ethyl alcohol, and others);
  • gases of various types (liquefied, poisonous, compressed, including cans for burners and refills for lighters);
  • radioactive, toxic, easily oxidized and corrosive substances (all kinds of acids, alkalis, mercury and devices containing it);
  • rechargeable (lithium-ion) batteries with a capacity of more than 160 Wh (if the power of the devices is from 100 to 160 Wh, they can be transported inside the equipment with the permission of the airline, up to 100 Wh in laptops, phones, inside equipment, while spare batteries can only be transported in hand luggage);
  • any sharp, heavy, cutting objects that can be potentially dangerous to others;
  • firearms, cold, electroshock weapons without special permits;
  • electronic cigarettes, magnetized items.

This list is long enough. It is set out in Appendix 1 to the Rules for conducting pre-flight and post-flight inspections No. 104 dated 25.07.2007.

Is checked baggage allowed for children?

For small travelers from 2 to 12 years old, the same baggage allowance applies as for adult passengers. For kids (up to two years old) without a separate seat, free baggage allowance weighing up to 10 kg and no more than 115 cm in the amount of measurements is allowed.

Can I combine my luggage?

The new rules retain the ability to combine things into one baggage at the request of passengers traveling together (two or more) under certain conditions. Moreover, one piece of such combined baggage, according to Russian rules, cannot be heavier than 30 kg and exceed 203 cm in size.

Traveling families with one suitcase are sometimes met halfway and they are forgiven for a slight overweight. Still, in practice, a lot depends on the pickiness of employees. In each case, this is decided individually.

It is not always possible to carry one heavy bag instead of two light bags when traveling abroad: European trade unions take care of their loaders and prohibit lifting excess luggage.

Naturally, there are exceptions for bulky luggage that cannot be separated (musical instruments, sports equipment and equipment, etc.).

What to do if your luggage is lost?

You landed and your items never showed up on the tape? Don't panic. But some actions need to be taken immediately, without leaving the arrivals area. Find the employees of the service of the airline performing the flight who are looking for the lost baggage, and, presenting them with a ticket, baggage pass, passport, issue an official written request.

The search for missing baggage according to Russian laws can take 21 days (how such a search takes place, in some airlines you can track it on the website using the online service). When the missing baggage is found, the carrier is obliged to deliver it to the address indicated by the passenger free of charge.

If, after three weeks, the baggage has not been found or was found, but partially or completely damaged, you can apply for compensation to the airline.

International rules set the maximum amount of compensation payments in case of loss of baggage or partial damage to it. In fact, in each specific situation, the amount of compensation is determined by the airline and depends on its internal rules. If you refuse to compensate for the damage caused, you should go to court.

How can I pay less for luggage?

The universal advice for such a case - do not take too much. Sometimes even a small margin can provoke big problems. Especially if this is a trip abroad or you have to use the services of several airlines.

Here you cannot do without studying the rules that are applied by different carriers along the route. Otherwise, even with an overweight of 1-2 kg, you will have to pay extra. And not only this. European movers, who are forbidden by their unions to lift luggage heavier than 32 kg, may simply refuse to deliver such a load.

Be especially careful when purchasing inexpensive tickets on low-cost airlines or at no-baggage rates. Often, such tickets cannot be returned if something happens, and you will have to fly light.

Baggage restrictions may be encountered when purchasing air tickets at promotional rates and promotions, when using bonuses. Such flights, at first glance, are financially profitable, sometimes imply lower baggage allowances than with the standard fare, or even offer to do with the choice of either checked baggage or carry-on baggage.

There is only one way out - try to take a little less things and leave at least some weight reserve up to the standard set by the carrier, which you need to familiarize yourself with in advance, and take this into account when packing your luggage while still at home. To do this, having weighed your weight with luggage and without luggage on floor scales at home, it is easy to make simple calculations and get rid of all unnecessary if something happens and repack the suitcase without hassle and fuss.

Experienced travelers are advised to put on the heaviest shoes and a lot of clothes before the flight, small heavy items can be carried in their pockets. Do not take a lot of care products and cosmetics (sometimes the cost of purchasing them locally is much less than what you have to spend on paying for the overweight).

And you can find a lot of such life hacks. Another of them is the ability to properly pack a suitcase. You can read about what you need to do in order to take everything you need and save on baggage in this article.

The allowed dimensions and weight of carry-on baggage on the plane are limited by certain standards. At the same time, there are no universal parameters of baggage that a passenger can take with him in the cabin of the aircraft: basically, the norms depend on the carrier, the paid class of service, as well as the flight distance.

In any case, you will have to find out the permitted weight and size of hand luggage in advance: in order not to pay for overweight and to avoid the most unpleasant situation - getting rid of unnecessary things just before departure.

With increased attention, it is worth studying the low-cost airlines' fares and proposals for new promotional fares before buying tickets - this applies to both domestic and foreign airlines. Cheap flights may have restrictions: no baggage or carry-on baggage, or with more stringent baggage weight requirements.

Size and weight of carry-on baggage on Russian airlines

The maximum carry-on baggage weight on the planes of most Russian airlines is 10 kg, for business class - 15 kg. However, before buying a ticket, you need to find out the norms for the selected fare, since they can be very different.

Weight and dimensions of carry-on baggage on foreign airlines

The range of tolerances for the weight and size of the bag in the cabin is even wider for foreign airlines. Depending on the air carrier, the weight of hand luggage on airplanes often varies from 5 to 18 kg. In some cases, carry-on baggage allowances can surprise you with generosity, even in economy class.

Websites of airlines operating international Passenger Transportation are often available in several languages, including Russian.

How much baggage can I take on the plane? The free and paid baggage allowance on the plane is determined by:

Worldwide There are two systems for determining the amount of free baggage allowance.
  • weight concept
  • quantitative (piece concept).

Weight system for determining the amount of free baggage allowance

In Russia, the minimum baggage allowance for a ticket with baggage is 10 kg. This rate can be increased by the carrier. In general, all airlines in the world try to adhere to the following free baggage allowance for adults and children over two years old:
  • First class - 40 kg
  • Business class - 30 kg
  • Economy class - 20 kg

The free baggage allowance includes the total weight of the baggage and the weight of the carry-on baggage.

Dimensional parameters also have limitations - for the sum of three dimensions, the size of a piece of baggage should not exceed:

  • in first and business classes - 203 cm
  • in economy class - 158 cm

In the cabin of the aircraft, it is allowed to carry free cargo up to 10 kg with overall dimensions not exceeding 115 cm.

For each child under 2 years old who does not have a separate seat, the free baggage allowance is 10 kg.

If the airline makes changes to these norms, then information about this can always be obtained when buying a ticket.

In the cabin of the aircraft in excess of the minimum weight allowance for hand luggage, you can take:

  • binoculars
  • camcorder
  • handbag (including laptop bag)
  • men's briefcase
  • backpack
  • baby carrycot / seat up to 10 kg
  • magazine or book
  • umbrella
  • notebook
  • tablet
  • hygiene products
  • warm clothes: coat, shawl, plaid, socks, sweater, etc.
  • holdall
  • camera
  • small bag with food, including baby food
  • medications
  • bouquet of flowers
You can also take the following items *:
  • crutches, walking sticks, or other necessary orthopedic devices
  • walkers,
  • folding wheelchairs
* These items can be placed on the shelf above the seat or under the seat in front of the chair. In the event that there is no room for them there, they can be checked in as baggage, and no additional fee will be charged.

To ensure the safety of passengers on board the aircraft, the weight and dimensions of the backpack, which is carried into the cabin in excess of the hand luggage limit of 5 kg, are set by the air carrier independently.

Seat number system

Typically this system is used on transatlantic flights. It determines the norms for the number of pieces of baggage.

Passengers of all service classes are allowed free transportation of two pieces of baggage weighing up to 32 kg each.

Please note that the weight of the seats is not cumulative!
This means that if a single piece weighs more than 32 kg, there will be an additional excess charge, even if the second piece weighs less than 32 kg.

In the sum of the three dimensions, the seat size must not exceed 158 cm for Economy Class and 203 cm for First and Business Class.

Excess baggage

If the weight and dimensions of your luggage exceed the established norms, then it is better to solve all the problems associated with its registration in advance. Payment for excess baggage is made in accordance with baggage rates in effect on the day the paid baggage receipt is issued, which is issued to the passenger upon receipt of payment from him at the airline's ticket office.

According to the current rules, credit payments for the carriage of excess baggage are not allowed.

Unaccompanied baggage

In this case, baggage is accepted for carriage separately from the passenger and is registered in advance as cargo under a separate air waybill.

Oversized, oversized and non-standard baggage

If you have oversized baggage, then its transportation must be coordinated directly with the airline.

Musical instruments and animals are not included in the free carriage allowance. Payment for their transportation is carried out in accordance with the tariffs in force at the time of payment for this transportation service. Musical instruments, fragile or valuable baggage are transported in the aircraft cabin on a separate ticket.

  • With a total weight of up to 75 kg, this baggage is carried in a separate seat
  • If the total weight exceeds 75 kg, such baggage is carried on two or more seats, in accordance with this, the required number of air tickets is purchased. In this case, for each individual seat, the passenger is charged a fee corresponding to the fare of the passenger who carries this baggage. No discounts are available for this rate.
  • The established free baggage allowance does not apply to the ticket issued for the carriage of baggage in the cabin of the aircraft on a separate seat.
Oversized or non-standard baggage is baggage that, in terms of its dimensions and weight (taking into account the type of aircraft on which the carriage is carried out), differs from the usual baggage carried. This baggage includes:
  • wheelchair
  • non-folding stroller
  • large musical instruments
  • bicycle, etc.
Such baggage is carried in the hold of the aircraft.

Usually each airline has its own bonus programs and a system of discounts, so the baggage allowance for airlines may differ from the standard norms. In addition, it must be borne in mind that these rules and regulations apply only to regular air carriers... Baggage allowances for low-cost airlines (low-cost airlines) differ from the generally accepted ones, as a rule, in a smaller direction. And some low-cost airlines do not carry baggage for free at all.

If you buy budget air ticket at a low-cost airline, then the air ticket usually includes only hand luggage, and you need to pay extra for the luggage separately. At the same time, the surcharge for the carriage of one of your luggage can be twice the price of the ticket itself. But it is better to pay for excess baggage in advance when buying an air ticket, since, most likely, it will be much cheaper than paying for excess baggage at the check-in counter.

Issues related to baggage allowed for carriage by air are quite exciting for many. After all, the rules are constantly changing, some of them are getting stricter. And for many passengers, the size of baggage on the plane is of fundamental importance. important value... Therefore, it is worthwhile to study the issue in advance, so that later on the check-in of bags and when weighing hand luggage, there will be no serious problems.

Today, carriers use two systems, taken as the main ones, which allow them to carry out the final settlement for the carriage of bags and suitcases. This:

  1. Weighing system
  2. According to the number of seats

The first option is often used on flights that go to the CIS countries and to Asia.

An important point in the measurement system is the permissible weight, i.e. the one that is carried free of charge. Graduation of the number of kilograms directly depends on the ticket class. Today the following regulations apply:

  • 20 kg per 1 passenger in economy class
  • 30 kg - in business
  • 10 kg per child up to 2 years

In the first system for calculating how much baggage you can take on board, the following principle works - a passenger can take as many bags as he wants, but their weight should not exceed the permissible standard. You will have to pay for all the extra pounds.

The second system implies that the minimum free kilograms should be packed only in one bag or two, if provided for by the class of the ticket. That is, if a suitcase is filled by 10 kg, it will already take up the permissible number of places, and you will still have to pay for a second suitcase or travel bag that does not belong to carry-on luggage, even if it is filled by 5 kilograms. This type of calculation is used for the most part in America. Among Russian companies, a similar scheme was introduced quite recently by Aeroflot. In such a payment system, a bonus is the fact that there is a little more free baggage allowance here:

  • For the economy - 23 kg
  • For business - 32 kg

It is important to understand here that if passengers go on a trip together, their luggage cannot be summed up. Everyone is responsible for himself. As a result, if the bottom has an advantage, while the other has a deficit of kilograms in the suitcase, the first will have to pay extra for the excess.

There is also a bonus for regular customers of the airline - they are provided with benefits on membership cards and for miles in the form of providing additional seats on board the aircraft, or the option of adding kilograms to the total amount of baggage weight is allowed.

Luggage dimensions

The dimensions of baggage, even for transportation in a special compartment of the aircraft, must be taken into account. So, it is considered standard and admissible for transportation without any additional procedures, except for weighing, a suitcase, which in the sum of its width, length and height is equal to 1.58 m. This measure is valid for a system that takes into account the number of places. In a weighing system, this indicator should be 2.03 m.

If your luggage is out of bounds, for example, you are carrying skis, bicycles and other oversized items, you will have to register them at a separate rack, and in some cases even pay extra. Luggage on an airplane in terms of size and weight in 2018 has the same parameters, but it is worth remembering that the situation may change.

After all, the principles of determining the luggage allowed on board are determined by the carrier himself. And you should regularly check the corresponding section on the airline's website or call hotline so as not to get trapped.

Excess baggage

Baggage that, in terms of weight or number of pieces, exceeds the limits stipulated by the ticket, is called excess baggage. And in most cases you will have to pay extra for it. There are, of course, carriers that allow a small overweight - a kilogram or two - without additional payment. But for the most part, for every kilogram in excess of the measure, you will have to pay money. The cost of excess baggage is different for each carrier. It is worth clarifying in advance how much money will have to be paid for an overabundance of things, if there is no opportunity or desire to pay too much.

Heavy luggage

Special attention is paid to luggage, which weighs over 30-32 kg. This is called ponderous. This includes those options that go beyond the permissible dimensions:

  • Skis and sports equipment
  • Musical instruments such as guitar or double bass
  • Household appliances such as an oven or refrigerator

Such goods can only be transported by agreement with the carrier - he should be notified in advance. On the day of departure, you must arrive in advance, because it takes some extra time to drop off such baggage. At the same time, it should be understood that the air carrier may refuse to carry baggage, for example, if the baggage compartments are small, or the space in them has run out.

Fragile luggage

There is a need to carry fragile luggage - glass, decorative elements, paintings, etc. In this case, it will also have to be drawn up separately and a corresponding mark on the cargo. If your baggage fits within the dimensions of your carry-on baggage, the best solution would be to carry it with you to the cabin to ensure the integrity of your belongings.

The issue of hand luggage in 2018 does not lose its relevance. Moreover, the data on it is constantly changing. The amendments to the law are now working. Previously, carry-on baggage included up to 10 kg of free weight, now from 5. But at the same time, air carriers independently determine how much weight they are allowed to carry on board. So, major airlines countries said they will remain at 10 for now, both for regular tickets and non-refundable ones.

In general, on average, the following options for carrying hand luggage are valid:

  • Business class - 1 piece weighing 15 kg
  • Economy - 1 piece 10 kg

It is important to take into account the dimensions of the bag so that it fits under all the restrictions. So, carry-on baggage should be packed in a bag 55 cm high, 40 cm wide, 20 cm thick. Some carriers, such as Aeroflot, plan to check compliance with the dimensions using special limiter frames, which will make it possible to immediately determine all the necessary parameters.
