This year we went to Rio again and visited one of the main attractions of the city - Mount Corcovado, on which stands the world famous statue of Christ the Redeemer.

We did not manage to get to the very top by car - we had to transfer with all our equipment to the bus. Then the usual story happened - we were stopped by the guards at the entrance near the statue and refused to let us go further without the permission of the park administration. Takeoff attempt from bus stop was also promptly suppressed by the guards. There are no other places to take off next to the statue, so the shooting did not take place that day.

Having found out where the park administration is, we immediately rushed there. We searched for quite a long time, since the exact place was not marked on the maps. In the end, with the help of hints from local residents, they found it. Highly a nice place: high in the mountains, in the heart national park... Funny, cell phones don't work near the administration building, but free WiFi works great.

I will omit the details of our conversation with the administration. In principle, they were not opposed to the shooting, but we could not allow it, since first we had to get approval from the church. For some reason, the Church could not give us such approval promptly. After a day wasted, we returned to the hotel with nothing.

The next day, Dima flew to film Christ from a large helicopter, and we did not deal with permits. In the evening, without much hope, we called the park administration. And oh, a miracle! The employee who dealt with our issue was able to obtain permission to shoot from the representatives of the church. We were allowed to take off from the statue!

The next morning we got up before dawn. It was still dark when we approached the bus stop. The guards at the gate were alerted and we were allowed inside in our own vehicle.

As we climbed to the top of the mountain, our faces grew more and more gloomy: the top was covered with a thick, dense fog. From parking to observation deck we walked practically in "milk". We met a group of filmmakers who were filming a film about Rio.

Minutes of agonizing expectation dragged on: whether the fog will stretch or not. It would be so disappointing to fly half the world, spend so much effort to get here at dawn and not take anything off because of the overcast ...

But luck nevertheless smiled upon us this morning: with the sunrise, a wind blew from the ocean, and the fog at the foot of the hill began to gradually recede, turning into fantastic colors with the first rays, but the statue of Christ remained in the shadows. And, suddenly, the sun peeped out into the clearing of the clouds, and a huge heavy cloud that was floating above us lit up with a fiery orange color. Dima shouted: "We are taking off urgently!", But I was already lifting the helicopter!

Per Last year I have seen many amazing sunrises, but I have never seen such a riot of colors. The dawn extravaganza did not last long - only 10 minutes. During this time, we managed to shoot only a few panoramas, which you can watch on our tour.

And now we bring to your attention a few facts about the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

Many great cities have their own business card... Speaking of Paris, I recall the Eiffel Tower, New York is associated with the Statue of Liberty, Vienna - with the opera, the most famous landmark of Moscow - the majestic Kremlin towers ... Rio de Janeiro also has its own symbol: this is the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

On the 700-meter-high mountain of Corcovado, there is a giant figure of Christ, with his arms outstretched over the city, as if blessing this land. Every year, almost 2 million tourists and locals climb the top of the mountain to be photographed against the background of the monument "for good luck."

The exact dimensions of the Christ the Redeemer monument in Rio are: height - 38 meters, including the pedestal - 8 meters; weight - 1145 tons, arm span - 30 meters. It is believed that the idea of its creation arose in 1922, when the 100th anniversary of Brazil's independence was celebrated. However, in fact, the history of the statue goes back to a more distant past.

Back in 1859, the Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss, visiting Brazil, was struck by the majestic beauty of Mount Corcovado. It was he who proposed to build a monument to Christ on its top. But then these plans were not destined to come true: at first the Brazilian court had no money, and then the monarchy had to give way to republican rule. And since the church was legally separated from the state, the idea of a monument faded into the background.

But the mountain was too good to be empty, and in the 20th century, Catholic organizations in Rio de Janeiro raised the issue again. A collection of signatures and funds was carried out, as a result, more than 2 million flights ($ 250,000) were collected for the ambitious project - a colossal amount at that time.

The Rio de Janeiro Administration announced a competition for best project, during which there was serious competition from the participants. The winner was the idea of the engineer Heitor da Silva Costa. His concept was that the pose of Jesus Christ, with arms outstretched to the sides, was supposed to represent a cross, and a massive pedestal - a globe. Thus, the sculpture is designed to convey to people one thought - "All that exists in the hands of the Lord."

The final design of the monument was designed by the artist Carlos Oswald. After making a number of adjustments, he rejected the idea of the globe. And now, finally, everything was ready for the erection of the monument itself.

The construction took about nine years. For a number of reasons, primarily technological, it was then impossible to create a giant sculpture in Brazil, so all its parts, including the frame, were made in France.

Disassembled parts were delivered to Brazil, and then transported by rail to the top of Mount Corcovado. The opening of the monument took place on October 12, 1931 - this date is considered the "birthday" of the statue of Christ in Rio and is celebrated annually with all possible solemnity.

The statue was repaired twice - in 1980 and 1990, and in 2010 it needed a cosmetic restoration: for some reason vandals covered it with strange inscriptions, like "Cat from home - dancing mice" (the meaning of the action is still not clear).

In 1932 and 2000, the night illumination system was modernized. And in 2007, this famous landmark of Rio de Janeiro was selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

You can get to the statue by electric train or along a mountain road. It is impossible to tear yourself away from the window already during the ascent: the Brazilian nature is so picturesque. Then a stunning panorama of Rio de Janeiro, the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, Sugarloaf Mountain, opens up to the astonished gaze from the observation decks. national park Tijuca, Atlantic Ocean and Guanabara Bay, at the mouth of which the city is located.

Once in Rio, it is impossible not to notice the majestic silhouette of the cross crowning the bay - it is Christ himself who seems to be trying to embrace the city, blessing it with outstretched arms. This gesture personifies peace and tranquility, for "all that exists is in the hands of the Lord."

More than one and a half million travelers from all over the world come to Corcovado every year. There is a reason: the statue of Christ the Redeemer can rightfully be considered one of the most grandiose structures of mankind. Its size, combined with the panorama that opens from the observation deck, captures the spirit of everyone who happens to be there.

A monument made of reinforced concrete and soapstone is installed on height 709 m, its height is 38 m, weight 1145 tons (of which only the head weighs 36 tons, hands 9 each), and the arm span is almost 30 m.

In the dark, the statue looks especially beautiful. The bright beams of searchlights directed at him create the impression that Jesus is descending from heaven to earth.

Historical reference

The history of the statue of Christ the Savior begins in 1859, when the Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss came to the "city of happy dreams" and, amazed by the mysterious splendor of Mount Corcovado, set fire to the idea of creating a religious monument on its top. In the same year, he turned to the daughter of the emperor Isabella with a request for funding for this project.

The gamble was approved, but the difficult financial situation of the state did not allow spending such huge funds on such ideas, so the decision to create the statue was postponed for 30 years. Instead, construction began on a small railroad to the top of Corcovado. By 1884 the canvas was stretched, it was on it that the delivery of materials for construction was subsequently carried out, but this was much later, because as a result of the separation of church from state, funding was completely cut off, and the erection of Christ was again postponed.

Father Pedro's plans were remembered only in 1921.The reason for their implementation was the upcoming anniversary of the 100th anniversary of Brazil's Independence in 1922. With the support of the church, in the person of Archbishop Sebastian Lemme, and the entire Catholic community, Monument Week was announced - a massive collection of funds and signatures for the construction of a monument that should become a Christian symbol of freedom and the country's rebirth. People supported this idea, for example, the well-known Brazilian magazine O'Cruzeiro collected almost 2.5 million from its subscribers in 7 days.

Therefore, the erection of the statue can be safely called a truly People's Project, the start date of which is April 22, 1921.

Erection of the statue of Christ the Redeemer (1928)

A whole team of both local and foreign specialists took part in the process of working on the sculpture. After the artist Carlos Oswald drew the sketch, engineers, architects and technicians met in Paris to discuss everyone technical problems the installation of a huge structure on the peak of the hill, where it is open to all rain and wind. After discussing all the details, the French sculptor Paul Landovsky began modeling plaster arms and a head, while engineers were developing a reinforced concrete frame. All parts of the statue were made in France and transported by sea to Rio.

The facing layer was chosen steatite, durable and easy-to-process material, which, due to its oily texture, is popularly called "wax" or "soapstone". It was specially imported to Rio de Janeiro from Sweden (Limhamn deposit).

In 1931, after 10 years of continuous construction work, the statue was fully completed. On October 12, at the grand opening, the first lights were lit on it, and the majestic Christ the Redeemer, seeing which, many people shuddered, crying with delight.

In 1965, the monument was consecrated by Pope Paul VI.

On October 12, 2011, the statue, without which it is already impossible to imagine modern Rio, turned 80 years old.

Brazil is different from many others southern countries the fact that there are practically no natural ones in it. Despite the presence on the territory of the state of many mountain ranges, active volcanoes there is no. No devastating floods or dangerous tsunamis were recorded either. The Brazilians themselves believe that on the seventh day the Lord did not rest, but created a great capital. This city is spread among the endless sandy beaches and even climbed the slopes of huge granite rocks. And on top of one of the highest hills - Corcovado - the world famous statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro rises, as if hugging the city. It is she who, in the unanimous opinion of all the townspeople, keeps him from all misfortunes.

Statue of the Prophet Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro

The idea of creating some kind of monumental monument - a symbol of the nation, came to mind of one of the city officials back in 1922. Then, all over the country, the centenary of Brazil's independence from Portugal was celebrated on a grand scale. Rio de Janeiro at that time was the capital of the state and it was in this city that they decided to erect a grandiose monument on the Corcovado hill, since its top was flat and was an ideal site for construction. In addition, back in 1884 was built Railway leading to this mountain. Multi-ton were delivered along it. Construction Materials for the construction of the statue.

I must say that initially the government of the country planned to create a monument to Christopher Columbus. However, most of the townspeople greeted such an offer with indignation. About Cruzeiro magazine held a popular vote. As a result, it was decided that the statue of Christ the Redeemer will be located in Rio de Janeiro at this very place.

At the design competition, the best idea was to depict Christ with open arms, as if he wanted to embrace the whole city and at the same time resemble a cross. And the symbol of the Christian faith, and compassion, and the desire to help all people was expressed by this figure.

A nationwide collection of money for the construction of a statue of Christ was announced. The church was actively involved in this project and also announced the collection of donations. In a fairly short period of time, a colossal amount was collected for those times - more than 2 million reais. But the financial problem was not the only one. In Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century, there were simply no technological conditions for the creation of such a grandiose building. France came to the rescue. It was in this country that the frame and plaster sketches of the details of the statue were made. They were taken by ships to Brazil, and already on the spot, according to the diagrams of soapstone and talcolorite, they completed the main parts of the statue, lifted them up the mountain, where a pedestal of reinforced concrete had already been erected, and put them together. By the way, the stone itself was brought from Sweden, and not only French, but also Romanian sculptors worked on the creation of, for example, the head of Christ. The project "Statue of Christ the Redeemer: Rio de Janeiro" was implemented with the participation of other countries.

Opening ceremony of an architectural masterpiece

This super-scale construction was carried on for nine long years. When all the work was completed, the ceremony of consecration and opening of the statue took place. This event brought together hundreds of thousands of tourists and religious pilgrims from all over the world. A few days before the opening, which, incidentally, took place on October 12, 1931, the statue was covered with a huge cloth. Therefore, she appeared before the audience only at night. Hundreds of searchlights suddenly flashed in the pitch darkness, and before the eyes of the astonished audience, it seemed to soar in the air. giant statue Christ in Rio de Janeiro with arms outstretched to the people. Since then, for 85 years, every day in Rio de Janeiro, any of its happy residents, as well as everyone who visits this city, can watch with delight a similar action that unfolds every evening on the Corcovado hill.

Christ the Redeemer statue: Rio de Janeiro - curious facts from the history of existence

During its existence, the statue, which has become a symbol not only of the city, but of the entire country, has, as usual, “overgrown” with a considerable number of legends, superstitions and curious coincidences. Here are just a few of them:

Although it is officially believed that the idea to create a statue on a hill appeared in 1922, back in the 19th century, namely in 1859, a priest - Father Pedro asked Princess Isabella cash for the construction of a statue of Jesus Christ on the Corcovado hill. He even offered to dedicate this building to a lady, but there was no reciprocal interest from the monarch's person, and the project did not take place.

In 2008, a storm of unprecedented power swept over Rio de Janeiro. In the city and its environs there was a large number of all kinds of destruction: houses, power lines, roads were damaged. But the statue of Jesus remained unharmed, although, as eyewitnesses could observe, lightning struck it more than once. Atheists attribute this miracle to the dielectric properties of soapstone, but Christians believe given fact a real providence of God.

In 2010, the next one ended in South Africa. At this time, at the foot of the statue, football fans, of whom, as you know, there are a great many in Brazil, posted a banner calling for the 2014 World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. As you know, their efforts were crowned with success - such a boom in the arrival of fans was not recorded in any championship.

In preparation for celebrating the statue's 50th anniversary, a French artist suggested painting the entire figure blue. In her opinion, it is he who symbolizes the world and should bring it to people. She even received the blessing of the Brazilian bishop. However, when all the necessary equipment was delivered to the site, a real tropical downpour for many hours fell on the city. The statue remained in the usual gray-green color, and believers believe that the Almighty did not like this idea.

There is no doubt that the statue of Jesus Christ installed in Rio de Janeiro will delight Brazilians and guests of the country for many years to come, and will bring many more amazing miracles. To believe in them or not is a personal choice of each person.

Rio de Janeiro, day two.
Today, the impression of Rio has perceptibly improved - apparently, Rio belongs to that rare type of cities that have an absolutely faded and nondescript center and all the beauties and sights in them are scattered on the outskirts - in this Rio is somewhat similar to Los Angeles. So, from my hostel, located near the Praca Onze metro station, I got to the Cosme Velho railway station, from where the trains to Mount Corcovado go, with two transfers - two buses and a metro. Upon arrival, it turned out that there were no train tickets for the next two and a half hours - a full house, everything was sold out. I didn’t want to climb the mountain on foot, and the railway itself is an attraction: the height difference is 690 meters, in one place it passes over a bridge 170 meters long; so I had to wander around the Laranjeiras district while waiting for the train, picking souvenirs and drinking coffee in cafes. There is a silver lining - during this time I bought all the planned Brazilian souvenirs and gifts. And just sitting for an hour in a cafe under a palm tree, slowly sipping coffee and finally realizing that you are not somewhere, but in Rio de Janeiro - it is worth a lot.

Laranjeiras district(Laranjeiras) is a fairly prosperous area in Rio. Here is located official residence the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro (at the Laranjeiras Palace) and the City Hall (at the Guanabara Palace). Neighborhoods of Cosme Velho station:

Mount Corcovado: in 1501, discovering the Gulf of Guanabara, Amerigo Vespucci named the hill overlooking the coast Pinaculo Da Tentação ("Top of Temptation"), following the example biblical mountain near the city of Jericho, where Jesus spent forty days in fasting and was tempted by the devil. The modern name Corcovadu ("hillock", "hump") appeared already in the 17th century; one of the versions says that the name allegedly comes from the Latin cor quo vado? ("Heart, where am I going?").

Statue of Christ the Redeemer: The idea of building a religious monument on the top of the mountain arose in 1859, when the Catholic priest Pedro Maria Boss proposed a project to the Princess Regent Isabel, daughter of the Brazilian Emperor Don Pedro II - but then the proclamation of the republic and other turbulent historical events followed, so everyone interested people were not up to the monument. They returned to the idea again on the eve of the centenary of Brazil's independence, in the 1920s. Construction began on April 4, 1922; according to the original design, Jesus held a cross in his left hand and a globe in his right. but locals even before the end of construction, they got into the habit of depicting numerous cartoons instead of the globe soccer ball, and the idea of a cross and a ball had to be abandoned. Grand opening statues of Christ the Redeemer(Cristo Redentor) took place on October 12, 1931; in 1937, the statue was officially recognized as a monument under state protection; in 2006 year Catholic Church declared it a place of pilgrimage, and a year later, during a vote by SMS, telephone and the Internet, it was recognized as one of the "seven wonders of the world of the New Time."

The statue is really nice and the views from the mountain are amazing - everything is wonderful, but as the world famous "emblem" of Rio, the statue attracts insane crowds of tourists. And many of them strive to stand right in front of the statue, spread their arms to the sides and stand so while their friends photograph them in the “statue pose” against the background of the original - they have to bend around these “statues” carefully in the crowd, trying not to hurt their outstretched limbs. And one Russian-speaking comrade climbed onto the parapet, raised his hands to the sky and let his companion shout from there how exactly he should be photographed.

On the lookout there was such an episode - someone once again yelled at someone in my ear, and I swore loudly out loud in Russian out of surprise. Suddenly I hear - “Are you from Russia? Hello!" It turned out that the seller of the souvenir stall, a long-time immigrant from Ukraine, heard Russian obscenities and was so delighted that we struck up a friendly conversation, during which he even gave me a piece of agate from his assortment for luck. So now I have agate from Mount Corcovado. So, it took me about five hours to visit the statue of Christ - I recommend setting up time with a margin and going there as early as possible, so as not to wait for the train, as I did. By the way, at 11 a.m. tickets were sold only for the train departing at 13:30, and at 13:00 - only at 16:00; so, having arrived at the station by lunchtime, it is quite possible to make it to the top only by sunset. And all this was at the beginning of November, that is, not yet at the height of the tourist season.

Main attraction Urca district(Urca) is, of course, Sugarloaf mountain(Pao de Azucar). The rock overlooking Guanabara Bay, along with the statue of Christ the Redeemer, is Rio's second most popular postcard storyline. Lower station cable car located on Pasteur Avenue (Avenida Pasteur, 520), from where the trailers first reach the intermediate station on the Morro da Urca hill (217 m), and from there - to the top of the Sugar Loaf (395 m).

Having reached the top, I decided to wait for the sunset there and look at the sunset and night Rio - judging by the reviews, with Sugar Loaf this is the best way to do it. Looking from the top of Sugar Loaf to the panorama of the evening Rio, you begin to understand why this city is considered one of the great cities in the world. There is something mesmerizing about this spectacle - the hills in the evening haze, and the ocean rolling over the city beaches and even favelas climbing up the hillsides.
By the way, about greatness: Rio managed to visit not only the capital of Brazil (when the capital of the Viceroyalty of Brazil was moved here from El Salvador), but even the capital of the entire Portuguese colonial empire - when in 1808, fleeing from Napoleon, the Prince Regent of Portugal fled to Brazil Don Juan VI together throughout his court.
