Habitas Tulum is located in Tulum in the Quintana Roo state, 3.5 km from Tulum Archaeological Site. It has a private beach and open pool working all year round. Enough unusual hotel, not for all. There is a vivid idea and concept, but the whole idea was not a little tweaked. That is, what is intended is not being fulfilled, but in general the atmosphere is good for a high-quality secluded holiday. Stay more than 2 days for amateurs only. The cuisine is more or less normal, even good enough for Tulum. Nearby there is Azulik, where you can go to parties and for dinner.

Offering a garden and bar, Kai Tulum Hotel is located in Tulum, 1.1 km from Tulum Archaeological Site. The location was beautiful set amongst sand dunes and the protected park The accommodations were wonderful - brand new cathedral thatched hut was superbly crafted with whitewashed wood finishes, spa like shower but with a beach feeling Only 11 huts so not crowded Some of the areas south are too crowded and trying to hard to be a wellness resort! There is a public beach to the north but the people coming through to the beach were all decent The staff was excellent and service top notch Restaurant food was great I've been to Tulum before and some of the resorts further south are packed tight together and are better to visit and have a drink or eat Kai Tulum is affiliated with Hotel Pescadores which has a restraurant also that is quiet with great food Walk to the Tulum ruins but go early .... fun beach clubs on either side that a very hip & local vs the “trying too hard” to be the latest hot spot We enjoyed the available boating on our beach Easy access on a boat to snorkel on the reef or go fishing This isn't available further south We went deep sea fishing which was so much fun We enjoyed Happy Tour group on the beach Great young guys all with smiles Kai Tulum was wonderful The chef cooked our freshly caught fish into a world class ceviche Be sure to have their mohitos!

Hotel in Zona Hotelera, Tulum

Amor Hotel is located opposite the beach in the seaside town of Tulum. It features a rooftop terrace with jungle views and an outdoor garden. My partner and I absolutely loved our stay at Amor Rooms. This place has something that the pictures cannot describe. Like the name says, once you arrive to Amor Rooms, you fall in love with it. At least, we did. As a couple, we really enjoyed waking up in a large comfortable King-size bed. The fans keep you cool at night and were quite powerful. The shower is also very comfortable and has yummy products (shampoo, shower gel etc). There is a large counter with a mirror, which makes it a good setting for a girl to get ready: there is enough space to lay out jewelery and makeup. The view from the room is on the jungle. The property feels more like a home since it "s tucked away away from the touristy beach front. On the other hand, the location was perfect. We could walk to most places by foot (nearby restaurants and beach cubs) and otherwise took short taxi rides to move around. Abraham, the property manager, is a sweetheart. He has a kind soul and was very helpful in explaining everything. He also gave us a list of his personal favorite things to do, and we followed his local suggestions. He was always available by WhatsApp and booked us an early-morning cab even though we had already checked out. We reminisce about this place and would love to return. We definitely recommend it for a wonderful romantic stay! You won "t regret it! :) Nativus Glamping & Cenote Tulum

I'll start talking about my recent trip to Mexico precisely from the ancient city. Tulum.

Do not even think to deny yourself this excursion, you will not regret it! That's for sure!

The only Mayan settlement on the seashore, not hidden in the jungle. And the sea is probably the most beautiful in the world! See for yourself the color of the water - it's incredible.

I think any hotel in resort cities will offer an excursion to Tulum. Usually offered in a set with Tulum - Koba, and maybe a cenote. But we have already visited Chichen Itza , Palenque and Uxmale , so Coba was not of much interest, we stopped in for a swim in the Cenote Grand Cenote near Tulum.

The three of us traveled, and at the moment when we were going to visit Tulum, we were resting at a hotel in the RIVIERA MAYA. Tour operators offered a tour for $ 70 per person, lasting until lunch.

None of us like to walk with a crowd and a tour guide, so we just left the hotel in the morning to catch a taxi. It takes about half an hour to get to the city, and in a taxi it would take $ 30 one way. But, as you know, the language will bring to Kiev (= We talked with the taxi driver, crossed the road and got on the intercity minibus to Tulum right from the side of the road, paying per person for 2.5 dollars! Simply gorgeous!

Another 10 minutes walk - and we are at the checkout. The ticket price is 65 pesos, which is about 4 ye.

On the way through the forest, a flock of such noses talked to us. Grab 2 bananas - the beast will eat right out of your hands with pleasure.

And now specifically about the city.

Picturesque ruins with tropical vegetation in the territory. In the bright sun it is very beautiful, it is pleasant to wander between the ruins.

I will not load the names of buildings and stories about what they served for and who lived there. Just look at the photos and enjoy the scenery.

And the guide will tell you in more detail when you come to see these miracles with your own eyes. As a last resort, Google will tell (((=

Here is such a cute cactus - one of the many plants that are unusual for us:

Unfortunately, almost all the ruins are fenced off, you cannot climb, touch and stroke, everywhere you can only iguanas, which are slightly less than tourists. They calmly bask in the sun and run away if you only get closer than a meter.

Well BEACH BEACH BEACH!

An incredibly beautiful beach with blue water and white, soft as semolina sand!

Warm waves with foam are what you need after a tour of the Mexican heat.

People splash with pleasure. By the way, don't forget to put on your swimsuit right away. There is nowhere to change.

Even more sea and beach in the review of the blue Bandeau SWIMSUIT with aliexpress.

There is another small beach, but it is fenced. Turtles lay their eggs there, so tourists are not allowed to go there. But you can admire the beach without people.

Here is such a beauty!

On top of that, we were lucky with the weather. In November, Mexico has a generally favorable dry climate.

Well, how without a fly in the ointment? (((=

This is what a tourist place looks like in reality, if you do not choose angles and areas without people:

Everyone wants to see this beauty (((= Don't even count on a deserted walk. Moreover, a bunch of pictures without people, if you came with an excursion group.

But neither the crowds nor the heat can spoil the impression of this wonderful town! Only 5 stars and my recommendations.

Visit Tulum - you won't regret it! It's unforgettable!

The city of Tulum in Mexico offers the best leisure activities for modern tourist, who wants to relax in a comfortable hotel and fill his weekend with vivid impressions. Lovers of archeology and history can plunge into the world of the mysterious Mayan tribes, and those eager to visit rare and untouched places can dive into caves and cenotes.

The nature and picturesque places in Tulum itself and its surroundings confirm the fact that our land is alive and amazing. All processes occurring in its depths and on the surface are the result of amazing mechanisms. The landscape of Tutum and its secret places hidden from the first sight, amazes the imagination with its prehistoric beauty.

History of Tulum

Before Columbus visited these lands, Tulum could be called a real center of Mayan culture. The indigenous people of these places built magnificent buildings, the architecture of which is striking in its complexity and raises many questions about how this ancient civilization could have built such gigantic structures. The pyramids have columns inside, several small windows, an altar and narrow doors. The houses are built on low plinths. Tribal life revolved around the worship of deities and many of the attractions and natural wonders were then also used in worship.

Today, modern Tulum is conventionally divided into three parts: modern city, resort areas and ruins of ancient settlements.

Why Tulum has such a name

The city itself is located on the seashore on 12-meter cliffs. El Castillo's pyramid rises above the popular sandy beach where in ancient times the Indians brought food and jewelry.

Previously, the city had a different name, known as Zama. This word means dawn. V modern history the city bears the name Tulum, which is rather appropriated to it because of the characteristic landscape. The fact is that the city is surrounded by rocks, the height of which varies from 3 to 5 meters, and since the word tulum is translated as a wall or a fence, this name aptly described the entire city, protected from all sides by a naturally formed fence.

The ancient Mexican settlement is fraught with many interesting and unusual phenomena associated with the position of the city, its history and the influence of the elements. TO interesting facts About Tulum the following can be attributed:

  • all year round on the territory of the Riviera a comfortable temperature from 26ᵒ in winter to 31ᵒ in summer;
  • it is here and elsewhere in the Caribbean that the largest number of caves is found - Cenote;
  • the Yucatan Peninsula has the second largest cave system, with a total length of about 318 km;
  • the outskirts of the city offer their guests a closer look at the Sak-Aktun underground river;
  • Tulum was a seaport providing trade links;
  • Tulum caves are replete with stalactites, stalagnets, stalagnates, and in one of them the remains of a mastodon were found - an extinct member of the proboscis family.

Tulum landmarks

The ruins of Tulum are 13 well-preserved structures located inside the fortress wall.

Tulum pyramids

If tourists want to see the most popular ancient city of the Mayan tribes, then they should go to Chichen Itza, 205 km from Cancun. This city was founded by 500 BC. The majestic pyramids were built so that the priests could watch the sun, moon and stars. Other famous pyramids can be viewed in Guatemala.

The highest pyramid is the Kulkan Palace, its height is 25 meters. This pyramid, like others, is distinguished by its stepped design, the sum of the steps of this pyramid is 364. This number is not something arbitrary, it corresponds to the number of days in a light year. Since the tribe's calendar had 18 months, 18 pyramid spans correspond to each of them. In addition, the pyramids themselves, which have four sides, are located in a strict position in relation to the cardinal points. Since the ancient inhabitants of Mexico worshiped the feathered serpent, the reptiles depicted in the statues represent the importance of worship cults for the tribes.

Another mysterious structure is the Karakol Observatory, which has a spiral structure inside the building, a peak that rises directly to the top of the pyramid itself.

An unusual pyramid with a well nearby is a Temple of the Warriors. Priestesses made sacrifices, and bodies were thrown into the well to appease the gods.

Archaeological sites of Tulum

The El Castillo pyramid in Tulum served as a landmark and beacon for the ancient inhabitants. The fact is that the coastal area is surrounded by a coral reef, due to which many ships suffered shipwrecks. It is this pyramid that is built opposite the only safe passage through the reefs. Torches burned here at night, making it a permanent landmark.

Tulum underground river

The famous underground river Tulum is fraught with many mysteries that have been discovered by curious researchers for tens and even hundreds of years. One of these discoveries was the Sak-Aktun underground river, the discovery of which led to the exploration of a huge system of caves.

The name of the river comes from the name of the cave, which translates as the White Cave. It is named White because the main rock is limestone. Its depth is almost 128 meters. The cave has a karst appearance and the whole territory of the peninsula abounds in such caves. Such unique formations are called cenotes, they were obtained as a result of the fact that the vaulted ceiling of the caves collapsed due to the influence of groundwater. The word cenote took its name from the language of the local tribe and comes from the word tsonot or well, because the caves really resemble huge wells.

Most of the caves are filled with water, and only about 6 km away are non-flooded galleries full of stalactites and stalagnites. The first discoveries were made in 1987, and by 2012 all connections between cenotes had been found, making the cave system the second largest in the world. At a depth of 57 meters of one of the cenotes, underwater explorers discovered the skeleton of a mastodon. Now in the waters of the river there are no living creatures due to the composition of the water, since here it is mineral and unsuitable for the life of underwater inhabitants

Tulum hotels and shopping

The Riviera offers cozy and comfortable hotels, with breathtaking ocean views. There are a lot of such hotels, but they are all small, with an average of 10-15 rooms, which is very much in line with the local flavor. Average daily rate is $ 10, and a room in a luxurious bungalow will cost $ 80.

You can entertain and pamper yourself with new purchases and gifts for loved ones at main street cities - Avenida Tulum. Although the purchase price is high, the price can be knocked down by almost half, especially if the seller is an Indian. Good advice for tourists: it is best to find a store with a rich assortment and make a lot of purchases there at once, in which case you can definitely count on a big discount.

Jewelery stores are especially popular, where jewelry with precious stones is presented at a reasonable price and good quality.

Connoisseurs of nature and outdoor activities can spend their leisure time as follows:

See Tulum on the map

The city is located 120 km from the airport in Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula in the Rivera Maya region, Quintana Roo state, along the highway from Cancun to Bacalar. For the convenience of searching, you can use the search by coordinates: -87.4653502 longitude and 20.211418 latitude.

How to get there

From Cancun to Tulum you can take an hourly bus, the fare in Mexican pesos is about $ 150 or $ 8. A rural van called "Collectivo" will take you for only $ 6. Buses pass through archaeological parks, where you can also get off and spend your leisure time.

To visit the ancient city, you need to get off at the first stop at the entrance to Tulum, and walk along the road to the ruins, which is one and a half kilometers long.

In Cancun or Playa del Carmen, you can rent a taxi, the fare starts from $ 4. Renting bicycles will cost twice as much, but the ride will be more eventful and unforgettable.

Mexico is hard to imagine without three things: spicy food, beautiful beaches and, of course, the Mayan pyramids. Almost every tourist visiting the Yucatan region strives to get to its pearl - the city of Tulum, because it is here that you can find all three components of Mexico at the same time!

Tulum has long gained popularity among tourists. It is here that the most picturesque archaeological zone is located, in which the Mayan pyramids have survived. Interestingly, Tulum is not just an uninhabited archaeological zone, which is filled with streams of tourists during the day, and by the evening everything dies out. it whole city! It is small, with only 25,000 inhabitants. All of them mainly work in the field of tourism.

There are some good cafes in Tulum that serve local food. Surprisingly, unlike Cancun cafes, in which tourists are protected and do not add so many spices to dishes, the food in local cafes is seasoned to the fullest! So be careful. Also, the city has several markets where you can buy not only souvenirs, but also clothes or colorful hammocks. Tulum is famous for beautiful beaches... Often this city is chosen by celebrities for their vacation. And it's not easy - there is no active nightlife like in Cancun, the beaches are mostly deserted, so you can fully experience the unity with nature. But it is worth considering that many beaches that celebrities tend to are located at a distance from the city. There are also luxury hotels. Public beaches, which are popular mainly with local residents, unfortunately cannot boast of their cleanliness. They usually have a lot of algae on them.

Tulum is conveniently located for tourists. You can go to sightseeing of this city as part of an excursion group or on your own. Since I'm not a big fan of excursion groups, I chose the second way to visit this city. Also, I wanted to maximize not only the ancient Mayan city, but also modern Tulum. Buses from the bus station run to Tulum from Cancun and Playa del Carmen several times a day. Travel time from Playa - 40 minutes (60 km), from Cancun - 1 hour 30 minutes (130 km). Don't forget to take your swimsuit, hat and glasses with you. Since Tulum is located on the shores of the Caribbean Sea, in an open area, the sun beats down mercilessly there during the day.

Arriving in the city, you find yourself at a small bus station. It is not so far from the bus station to the archaeological zone, on foot slowly for 30 minutes. On the way you will come across several information counters. On them you can take just such a map or book a guided tour of the ancient Mayan city.

You can get such a map of the city at the information desk.

The main square, Zocalo, is located in the middle of the city. You will definitely not pass it! Life is in full swing here: street performers in Indian costumes perform. There are also local cafes where you can have a bite to eat. There is a small market on the other side of the square.

Carried away by all this, it is easy to forget the main purpose of your visit to Tulum! So, after a quick bite, I went to the ruins. The road to the ruins is not difficult to find. It starts right from the square. It takes another 15 minutes to walk to the main entrance to the complex. However, there is another way to get to the ruins - a train that runs between the square and the entrance. The ride on it is paid. Since I was still full of strength and determination, I decided to go on foot.

Here is a sign that directs you to the road to the ancient city.

There is always a long queue at the entrance to the archaeological complex. Therefore, you will have to stand for some time to buy tickets. An entrance ticket costs $ 65 (for 2016). You can also buy a guide. Before entering the territory of the complex, I recommend that you look into the toilet, since there are none on the territory itself. All right, now you can definitely go to inspect the ruins.

Ticket to the territory of the archaeological complex

If you are not at all familiar with the history of the city, you can briefly read it here

After passing through the checkpoint, you find yourself on a small stone path overgrown with exotic plants and trees. These trees provide the shade and coolness you need after spending nearly an hour in line.

Many palms have such fruits.

There are many cacti on the territory of the archaeological complex

There are no people in the ancient Mayan city for a long time, but animals liked it! Along this path, noses are constantly spinning, they rummage in the ground, completely oblivious to people. And how many iguanas are there! They are everywhere! They bask in the sun, lie on the stones of the ancient Mayan pyramids. It seems that this has long been their territory!

The noses are looking for something again

And here is their whole family

And this iguana is clearly admiring the beauty of the sea.

A shady path will lead you straight to the wall. It is behind it that the archaeological zone begins.

A little more and a stunning view will open in front of you

After passing through the entrance, the ancient city opens up in full view

To better understand what kind of buildings are located on the territory of Tulum, I will tell you a little about its history. The name Tulum itself is translated from the Maya language as "wall", "fence". Probably because the city was surrounded by a wall on three sides. Part of this wall remains today. The city itself was located on rocks 12 meters high. It is one of the few Mayan cities that did not leave before the arrival of the Spaniards. The inhabitants of the city were mainly engaged in fishing. The city itself flourished for a long time. Only 13 archaeological structures have survived to this day. All of them are badly destroyed. Tulum, in comparison with other archaeological zones of Mexico (, Coba, Chichen Itza), is being destroyed more actively. Sea air and winds greatly affect the condition of buildings. Local authorities are trying to preserve this archaeological complex and are restoring many buildings.

The wall formerly surrounding the city

The territory of the archaeological zone is large, therefore, there is never a huddle between tourists. Of course, the biggest influx of tourists happens in the afternoon. But even this does not prevent you from enjoying the views of the ancient city. Several buildings are of the greatest interest here:

The territory of the ancient city

Temple "Castle" which is located in the center of the archaeological zone. You will definitely not pass by him. There are always a lot of tourists here and the most beautiful view of the coast. Be careful, in addition to the beautiful view, there is also a strong wind here! The castle became the symbol of Tulum. It is him that you can find on all postcards in the city. This building was used by the Maya for ceremonies and religious festivals. The dance platform preserved in the middle is proof of this. The castle is decorated with frescoes and images.

the stone remains of a residential building, presumably belonging to an influential citizen. The house got its name thanks to the well that provided water to the entire city.

- Earlier the walls of this temple were decorated with rich frescoes and paintings. Many of them are now destroyed, some have been restored.

Also, among the surviving buildings there are houses of local residents.

Ruined Mayan Homes

Take your time around the territory of the complex, go up to the Castle Temple, enjoy the views of the Caribbean Sea and the coast. it unforgettable experience! At the bottom of the complex there is a beach where you can swim.

Beach at the bottom of the complex

In bad weather and strong winds (which seem to always blow here), tourists are not allowed to the beach. When I visited Tulum, unfortunately the beach was closed. Since I really wanted to swim on the shores of Tulum and I still had decent time until the evening, I decided to leave the archaeological zone and go to the central city beach. You will immediately understand where to go. Leaving the territory of the ancient city, you will see a pointer to the road to the beach.

Pointer to the city beach

As it turned out, it was necessary to go to it decently - about 30 minutes along the asphalt along the thickets. But my desire to swim overcame everything and I went there. The beach was not equipped, there were no changing rooms, sun beds, toilets. The coast of the beach stretched into the distance for many kilometers. But often it was covered with algae. Therefore, the city beach of Tulum did not make a strong impression on me.

But from it there was a really amazing view of the rock and the Temple of the Castle! What a delight it was after a hot meal for the sun to plunge into the cool water. After a little rest on the beach, I headed back to the city, as my bus was about to arrive.

Let me summarize my impressions, because there were a lot of them that day! Is it worth going to Tulum? - Of course yes! Don't even think about these questions. Seeing the ancient Mayan city and enjoying the postcard views is well worth the time spent here. But modern Tulum did not conquer me - the town turned out to be small, with a complete lack of attractions. Despite this, I was able to find pluses in this city - undoubtedly more "Mexican" food, exactly the kind that local, cheap and entourage souvenirs eat, and the prices here are several times lower than resort prices. But the beach upset me a little. In cleanliness and comfort, it is inferior to Cancun beaches, but you will not find this kind anywhere else!

Be sure to head to Tulum and set aside a full day for it!

In the heart Riviera Maya, 131 km from Cancun, is one of the most visited attractions in Mexico, the image of which is full of all catalogs of tourist offers. These are ruins against the backdrop of the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo. The settlement is not as well preserved as either Palenque, however, it has an additional attraction - magnificent beaches with white sand, dense jungle, in which the sacred wells of the Maya, cenotes (caves filled with water of underground rivers) are hidden. We invite you to interesting excursion to the sights of Tulum - legendary place Mexico!

Historical facts about the city of Tulum

Originally Tulum called Zama, which means dawn, was the defensive fortress of the Mayan Empire. On its walls were observation towers, from which the sea was observed and astrological studies were carried out, in particular, the study of Venus. The city was built around 1200 and a couple of centuries later reached its peak as a trading port. Wealthy merchants lived here, who developed navigational and domestic routes for the sale of products and communications with other Indian villages and peoples.

In 1518, the chronicler of the history of the conquest Juan Diez who participated in the campaigns Juan de Grijalva, compared Tulum with Seville for its beauty and fabulous wealth. In the early years of the colony, the city was inhabited by the Spaniards, but after 150 years it was abandoned and forgotten.

Priests Tulum practiced the cult of the "morning star", Venus, which was considered a double god, the patron saint of trade, was portrayed as twins and bore the name Kukulcan. Archaeological excavations discovered the ceremonial and political center of the city, temples, observatories and sculptures, the stucco molding of which is dedicated to the religious ideas of the priests of Tulum about the Setting and Rising God. The wall paintings of the sanctuaries also include images of Venus.

These are blue transparent pools where fish and turtles swim, there are convenient platforms for getting into the water, and on the banks there are palapas - huts covered with thatch and palm leaves, adapted for recreation and picnics.

More than 70 species of aquatic fauna live here, and many sports are practiced by tourists. Another feature of the park is the simultaneous thermocline and halocline phenomena that characterize the gradients of salinity and sea water temperature.
