Kutaisi is a sea. Kutaisi and surroundings: main attractions

In western Georgia, on the banks of the Rioni River, there is an amazingly calm, striking beauty, one of the oldest cities in the world, the city of Kutaisi, administrative center Imereti. Today Kutaisi ranks second in terms of population and third in terms of economic significance among all cities of Georgia.

From the time of its foundation, Kutaisi was the capital of the Abkhazian and later Imeretian kingdom. During Soviet times, Kutaisi was turned into the most important industrial region of Georgia. Since 2012, the city has been the parliamentary capital of Georgia.

In a strange way modern striking imagination coexists well in the city architectural structures, classic Stalinist five-story buildings and the most ancient architectural monuments of world magnitude.

The Rioni River stretches across the city, dividing the city into two parts. The right bank is old part Kutaisi, where the historical and cultural sights of the city are located, numerous new buildings are located on the left bank. Both parts are connected by a series of picturesque bridges and bridges that emphasize the majestic beauty of the city and give it a unique flavor.

Weather in Kutaisi

Kutaisi and its surroundings have a subtropical humid climate. The weather throughout Imereti and in Kutaisi in particular is characterized by strong gusty winds in the spring-autumn period. During heavy rains, the water level in the river rises, and the streets of the city are often submerged. In winter average temperature ranges from 0 to +4 ° C, and in summer - + 25 ... + 27 ° C. Winter absolute maximum - + 17 ° C, summer - + 44 ° C.

Nature

The city of Kutaisi is located on the territory Colchis lowland, a significant part of which was formerly covered with magnificent forests. Today, most of it is used to grow crops such as citrus fruits, tea, grapes, etc.

A stormy river flows through the city Rioni, which originates in the mountains overlooking the plain.

Streets, squares, parks and squares of the city are buried in greenery. One of the districts of Kutaisi is called Mtsvanekvavila, which literally translates as "green flower garden".

Caves in Kutaisi

A unique natural formation is the famous karst caves of Sataplia- one of the main tourist sites in western Georgia near Kutaisi. There are five caves in Sataplia, where amazing representatives of flora and fauna meet. Only one of them is presented to the attention of visitors. Well-preserved footprints of dinosaurs have been found in the caves. The vaults of underground palaces are decorated with huge stalactites and stalagmites of the most bizarre shapes. Underwater rivers seethe here, continuing to continuously punch themselves more and more new passages. And from the very Mount Sataplia, in which these amazing caves are located, a picturesque view of Kutaisi and its environs opens up.

Attractions in Kutaisi

Bagrat temple

Modern Kutaisi inherited from its majestic past a number of architectural monuments, which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of these monuments is Bagrat temple standing on the very ancient site in the city - on the hill of Ukemerion. For a long time, the Bagrat temple was a symbol of united Georgia, because it was here that King David IV was crowned, who created a single Georgian kingdom. The temple was partially destroyed during the Turkish attack in the 17th century. and did not recover after that. Since 2001, open-air services have been held here.

Gelati

Of great historical interest is the historical architectural Gelati complex located 11 km from Kutaisi. The complex includes:

  • Gelati Monastery of the Virgin,
  • Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
  • academy,
  • three-tiered bell tower.

Thanks to the academy, where the best scientists of the country taught and studied science, Gelati became the center of the scientific life of medieval Georgia. Gelati was also the tomb of the Imeretian kings.

Motsameta monastery

While exploring the sights of Kutaisi, you should pay attention to a small picturesque monastery with pointed round turrets, which is called Motsameta... The monastery stands above the river itself, immersed in coastal greenery. According to legend, it was built on the site of the execution of the Georgian princes Konstantin and David Mkheidze, who refused to convert to Islam. The relics of these great martyrs are kept inside the monastery. The building was rebuilt in the 10th and 19th centuries.

A walk along the streets of the old part of the city, where on the steep mountain slopes, as if overhanging each other, are located low stone and brick houses, will leave a unique impression.

Nutrition

The brightest and most refined gastronomy in Georgia is precisely Imeretian cuisine... It is based on the active use of all kinds of herbs and vegetables. This is due to the fact that for centuries the inhabitants of Imereti, the land of rocky and low-yielding, had to show a rich imagination to invent culinary masterpieces. For example, for the preparation of the delicious "mkhali", beet and radish tops, nettles, spinach, cabbage and young shoots of shrubs are used. All the ingredients are boiled and mixed with nut dressing, garlic and spices. The dish strikes the imagination of the most fastidious gourmets.

The main meat product of Imereti is chicken cooked with all kinds of sauces: isrim-makvali (made from blackberries and unripe grapes), garlic sauce, weaved (made from tkemali fruits), tomato-nut with herbs, etc.

Especially popular are Imeretian khachapuri, abundantly filled with Imeretian (lightly salted) cheese, cooked in special clay pans - ketsy.

The most popular type of bread in Imereti is corn tortillas.

Restaurants and cafes of Kutaisi will delight their guests with traditional Imeretian dishes. The menu in most establishments is compiled only in Georgian, so you should use the services of a waiter to make a choice that can best suit your taste.

Accommodation and housing prices

Various hotels, hostels and guest houses... Hotels that provide a wide range of services to their customers are Imeri Park Hotel(cost of living from $ 50 per person), Hotel Kolkha(from 70 $), Hotel Rcheuli Palace and etc.

The cost of living in hostels and guest houses, depending on the season, varies from $ 15 to $ 20 per person per day.

Detailed information about accommodation in Kutaisi can be obtained from the tourist information center, which recently opened in Kutaisi.

Entertainment and recreation

A number of museums in Kutaisi offer their expositions to the attention of residents and guests of the city. Kutaisi has a unique historical Museum , which stores amazing specimens dating back to the Bronze Age (cult-ritual objects, statuettes of animals, jewelry made of clay, stone, precious metals, etc.). The museum presents the richest collection of firearms and bladed weapons.

Vladimir Mayakovsky spent his childhood in Kutaisi, so today he works in the city memorial museum poet.

Theater lovers can visit the renovated Opera and Ballet Theatre, and Kutaisi Drama Theater.

Purchases

The best spices in the country are sold in the markets of Kutaisi. The collection of Imeretian spices will become an original, healthy and unforgettable gift for everyone who loves to cook deliciously. Experts know that the real " tklapi”(Sun-dried tkemali plum puree, which is an indispensable ingredient for making kharcho) can only be bought there.

Transport

The main public transport is the bus. Also, minibuses running in all sorts of directions are widespread. There are many taxis operating in the city. During non-working hours, this is the only mode of transport that can be used, for example, from the airport to the hotel. By the way, in Kutaisi, as in all cities of Georgia, in order to find housing, you just need to contact a taxi driver with this question. The cost of the trip should be negotiated in advance.

The Kutaisi cable car deserves special attention. It leads to one of the city's parks. From a bird's eye view, you can admire the panorama of the city.

Connection

In Georgia today, the rapid development of Internet communications is taking place everywhere. In Kutaisi, in the central part of the city, there are several Internet cafes. The cost of the service is relatively low - about $ 0.5 per hour of being online.

Tourists traveling with a laptop can use the Internet via Wi-Fi, which is provided free of charge in almost all hotels, guest houses, and hostels. You can also purchase a wireless internet card from mobile operators ( Geocell, Magti, Beeline). The cost of the Internet will be about $ 15 for 1 GB of traffic.

You can call abroad both from mobile phone, and using the services of call points, which are located in the central post offices.

Security

For a long time, the city of Kutaisi was considered the thieves' capital of Georgia, but after the police reform, the situation changed dramatically. In the course of the reform, all police officers were completely dismissed and a new composition was recruited, the salaries of police officers were significantly increased, severe punishment for bribes was introduced (imprisonment for up to 10 years), police units are equipped with modern technology and equipment.

The city was divided into small squares, for the order in which certain employees are responsible, who, if necessary, can get to the crime scene within 5 minutes. As a result of all these transformations, crime in the city (and country) is now almost completely eliminated.

Business climate

In the course of the liberal reforms in Georgia, the economic activity in the country is increasing. The result of the radical tax reform that was carried out in Georgia was a sharp reduction in the share of the shadow economy and the attraction of significant foreign investment.

The business climate of Kutaisi has significantly revived for last years... The location of the city not far from the Black Sea and in picturesque mountains, concealing many ancient unique structures, contributes to the transformation of Kutaisi into one of the main tourist centers of Georgia. The reconstruction of the airport had a positive impact on the revival of tourism in the region. Kopitnari". The beauty and uniqueness of the ancient city is emphasized by the modern system of street lighting, which, in addition to the aesthetic one, has an ecological function, while reducing the consumption of electricity at times.

There is a free industrial zone in Kutaisi - a specially equipped area for the operation of industrial enterprises.

Real estate prices

As a result of the transfer of parliament from Tbilisi to Kutaisi, there was a significant increase in property prices in the city. First of all, this affected the real estate on Irakli Abashidze Avenue in the immediate vicinity of the parliament building. Today, the average price for rented housing is about $ 250, while in many areas of the city there is no hot and often cold water.

After a long stagnation, the development of Kutaisi began quite recently, in this regard, tourists should remember that they can pay with a credit card only in a few places (large restaurants, hotels, shops). The standard of living of the population is still quite low, therefore, it is better to exchange cash with a higher denomination for notes of lesser denomination.

Going on a trip to Imereti, you should be prepared for the fact that many houses and even hostels may not have either hot water or heating.

You should also pay close attention to bans in public places, for example, to a ban on smoking - the fine will be about $ 6.

One should refrain from conversations touching upon national topics and from anecdotes about Georgians. Respectful attitude towards the owners of the city will provide guests with the most cordial welcome.

Kutaisi is one of the oldest cities in existence in modern world... The history of the city dates back several millennia ago. Very modest today, Kutaisi was once the capital of the Colchis kingdom.

However, tourists are attracted not by the city, with its centuries-old history, but by the treasures that they keep. In future articles I will tell you how we climbed into caves and admired the ancient monasteries, but this one will be useful to those who decide to stay in the city for at least one day.

Guesthouses and hotels

There is a huge selection of accommodation in Kutaisi, however, for the most part - budget guesthouses or inexpensive 3 * hotels. Dima and I love guesthouses, so we always try to stay with a family so that we can chat with someone and see how the locals live.

  • Guesthouse Mariami is clean, comfortable and not far from the center (15 minutes walk). The friendly hosts talked about the sights of Kutaisi and even prepared brochures and maps for us so that we could better navigate the city. In addition, they helped us with organizing an excursion to the Gelati and Motsameta monasteries and negotiated a good price with the driver.
  • The Smile guest house is also clean and comfortable, but the room in which we lived, I liked more. What was especially surprising - when booking, we did not include breakfast in the price, but the hostess went to the market in the morning and fed us delicious food, without taking a penny for it (although we offered, we even insisted!).

In my opinion, the sights of Kutaisi are boring and mediocre. As I already wrote, people come here to see the surroundings of the city; a stop in Kutaisi is more a necessity than a tourist interest. However, if you have some free time, there are a few places worth looking at.

Bagrat Cathedral

The cathedral, towering on the Ukimeroni hill, can be seen from almost anywhere in Kutaisi. The ancient temple has a thousand-year history, is included in UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is listed in all guidebooks as the main attraction of the city. The entrance to the Bagrat temple is free.

If Georgian shrines do not particularly attract you, you should come here at least for the sake of a beautiful panorama of Kutaisi. It is especially beautiful here before sunset or dawn.

Rioni River and White Bridge

I love nature and the fact that Kutaisi stands on the river only adds victory points to the city. I like to walk along the Rioni, listen to the noise of the mountain river and admire the authentic houses. Perhaps it is the embankment with small bridges that is mine favorite place in Kutaisi. The most famous bridge is white, there are many cafes and restaurants near it.

Cable car

The best way to see the whole city is to look at it from above. In Kutaisi, this can be done in two places: near the Bagrat temple or in the Gabashvili park, which is also located on the mountain. The amusement park is small, like from my childhood: an old Ferris wheel, a shooting gallery, a chain carousel, cars and several other attractions. Despite its modesty, there are always a lot of people here.

Cable car, which goes to Gabashvili Park, is located near the white bridge, on Kantselebi street. The cost of lifting is 1 GEL, attractions for 2 GEL.

Market

To get a feel for the country, you need to go to the market where local products are bought. It is in such places that the genuine color that shows the life of people from the inside. Everything is real here, not for show, not for tourists, for yourself. In the Georgian markets, you and about the most interesting places cities will tell and share valuable advice, and even feed them as if they were a native.

Georgians are very sociable, you can strike up a casual conversation in no time, and the natural hospitality and cordiality, once again, amazes with its sincerity. In the markets, we were repeatedly treated to, and when buying one product, another was given as a gift. For example, I took dry adjika to my home, so the seller poured me several different bags of spices as a gift, saying: "Very tasty, you will try it at home!"

Parliament of Georgia

The parliament was designed by the Spanish architect Domingo Cabo. It is an ultra-modern 40-meter building that contains: offices, conference rooms and plenary rooms. Tourists are not allowed to go inside, but nobody forbids looking at the building from the street. Address: st. Irakli Abashidze 26

History Museum

The museum was founded in 1912 and has a permanent exhibition that includes more than 150,000 exhibits of the country's cultural heritage. Working hours: 10:00 - 17:00, Sat. and sun. day off. The entrance is 3 GEL, on the spot you can take a guide for 15 GEL. Address: st. Pushkin 12

Art Gallery im. David Kakabadze

The Art Gallery was founded in 1976. The gallery displays the works of Georgian artists - paintings, sculptures, drawings, as well as objects of applied art. Among them are original paintings by the famous Georgian artist Niko Pirosmani. The museum is open on weekdays from 10:00 to 18:00. Entrance ticket 1 lari. Address: st. Shota Rustaveli 8

National Museum of Military Honor

The museum displays objects related to the Georgian history of military affairs - documents from the Second World War, photographs of soldiers, orders, letters, etc. The museum is open on weekdays from 10:00 to 18:00, admission is free. Address: st. Brosse 2

Transport Kutaisi

You can move around the central part of the city on foot, the distances are small and, as such, there is a need for public transport no. However, remote places in Kutaisi can be reached by buses or taxis.

  • The most popular routes are # 1 and # 200. Bus number 1 runs between the center (Colchis Fountain) and the bus station (near McDonald's), number 200 also goes to the bus station, but stops in the center near the Karvasla shopping center (Tsereteli street). A city bus ride costs 40 tetri. In contrast, the buses in Kutaisi were always crowded.
  • quite low, taxis are no exception. The cost of travel around the city is 3 - 6 lari, the price depends on the distance. Often, tourists are told prices a little higher, in which case you need to bargain!

Where to eat deliciously

  • El Paso is universally recommended by the locals. It is tasty, inexpensive and fast service. El Paso is located in the very center of Kutaisi, opposite the Colchis fountain. Of the minuses, I can only note that the cafe menu is not very diverse: there are several types of khinkali, barbecue, a couple of meat dishes, cheeses, sauces and that's it! But since I am a fan of khinkali, I don't need anything else to be happy. Have been here five times, always left well-fed and satisfied. Average bill 40 - 45 GEL.

  • Palaty is # 1 in TripAdvisor reviews. I can't say which is really the best, but not bad - yes. True, there are not many Georgian dishes on the menu, mainly: pizza, pasta, steaks, etc. There are also Georgian dishes, but the emphasis is not on them.

We ordered cheese slices, eggplant with nuts, bazhe peanut sauce, ojakhuri, elarji (corn porridge with cheese) and mineral water... The account was 73 GEL. Address: Pushkini Street II

  • Baraqa is the most delicious place in Kutaisi (IHMO). Each dish is a culinary masterpiece! Only the prices in Baraqa are above average. We paid 80 GEL for eggplants, cheese, khinkali (5 pcs.), Barbecue and lemonade. The institution is located in the center, near the Colchis fountain.

How to get to Kutaisi from Tbilisi

Kutaisi has good transport connection with the capital. From (from Didube bus station) buses leave for Kutaisi every half hour. The fare is 10 GEL, the journey takes about 4 hours. On the route, the driver makes one obligatory stop where you can buy water or go to the toilet. You can also get to Kutaisi by train.

For the current schedule, see official website Georgian railway. The train travels a little longer than the bus, almost 5.5 hours. And the site is not the most convenient for buying tickets, it is better to go for them to the railway ticket office. The cost of the Tbilisi - Kutaisi train is 9 - 15 GEL one way.

The city of Kutaisi is located in Imereti. He has ancient history dating back over 2500 years. In the era of antiquity, the city was the capital of the legendary Colchis kingdom, it was here that the Argonauts sailed for the golden fleece. Throughout its history, Kutaisi has played an important role in the political life of Georgia, and in 2012 it became the parliamentary capital of the country.

The river on which Kutaisi stands was called Phasis in ancient times; now it is Rioni - one of the deepest rivers in the Caucasus and a natural landmark of the region.

And here you can see truly holy places, feel the atmosphere of the old streets of the city and appreciate the warm Georgian hospitality. In this article, we will tell you in detail what you can see in Kutaisi in 1-2 days.

What to see in Kutaisi

The center of Kutaisi is undoubtedly the David the Builder Square paved with cobblestones. The bus "Bus station - Railway station" runs here. And the first thing that attracts attention on the square is the Colchis fountain, built recently, in 2011-12. In the words of ex-President Saakashvili, "the most expensive fountain in Georgia."

It is round in shape and consists of 5 tiers (cascades). On each of them are figurines of animals, as well as a man with a horn filled with wine. These are enlarged exact copies of figurines from the era of the Colchis kingdom found during excavations. The upper tier is the smallest; there are two gilded horses in armor - the horses of the legendary king Aet. All levels are faced with polished stone, pedestals are lined with blue tiles.

In the evening, the fountain is very beautifully illuminated, as is the Lado Meskhishvili Theater located opposite.

The theater building is a classic in the best sense of the word. Four pairs of columns with posters at the entrance invites you to attend the performance. On both sides of the entrance stretch beautiful rows arched windows. Inside there is an oval auditorium with 700 seats. The theater was built back in 1860, since then performances have been regularly held here. Standing in front of the theater building and the fountain, you can see the famous Bagrati Cathedral just above, to which the street of the same name leads.

In general, central Kutaisi is the streets lined with stone and the atmosphere of a real old European town. Everything is clean and well maintained. The low-rise buildings have been restored and look very solid. Sometimes it seems that you are somewhere in Slovakia. But this is Kutaisi, Georgia.

On the other side of the square, along Shota Rustaveli Avenue, there is the Kutaisi city square, where you can calmly walk in the evening and admire the well-groomed flower beds. There is a complex of fountains and sculptural compositions, for example, a monument to the sisters-musicians. Two girls sing sweetly in expressive poses, and their sisters (or girlfriends) play the guitars to the right and left of them.

If you walk along the street. Tsereteli and turn onto st. Pushkin, then you can go straight to the White Bridge.

It was built in 1872. The bridge has 3 spans, it is made of metal and stands on stone supports. The structural elements were custom-made in France. The bridge got its name because of the color of the paint with which it is covered. Do not rush to leave here, stand at the railing, admire the running Rioni and the magnificent view of the city. Immediately attracted by the sculpture of a boy with two hats in his hands, preparing to jump from the bridge in Rioni. This is one of the moments of the film "Unusual Exhibition" (1968), filmed here. The boy is an episodic character. In the film, he jumps into Rioni, abruptly removing the hats from the protagonist and his actor friend. Then he emerges and theatrically shouts to them: "Ampreduso-meduso!"

Attractions of Kutaisi

Historical Museum

Located a little further than the central square, you need to walk a little along the street. Tsereteli before crossing with st. Pushkin. Nearby is bus stop"Tsereteli". The museum is located in an old two-story building right on the corner. Inside, it is gracefully decorated. An adult ticket costs 3 lari ($ 1.1). Opening hours - from 10 to 18-00, day off - Monday.

The exposition of the museum includes ethnographic, numismatic and archaeological funds. Also, the museum contains more than 900 ancient manuscripts and documents - they are of interest to historians.

In the ethnographic section you can see traditional clothes, weapons of different periods (from the Middle Ages to the present day), armor, household items. The numismatics fund has more than 10 thousand coins, ranging from antique ones. The archaeological department makes it possible to see the artifacts of the Colchis kingdom, found during excavations, mentioned in historical works and ancient Greek myths.

In general, this place is worth visiting for anyone interested in Georgian history.

Cable car

Next to the White Bridge is the cable car boarding station. For 50 tetri (0.2 $), you can ride through Rioni to the other side, to the Park named after Visarion Gabashvili. The technique is still from the Soviet period, however, everything works fine. The river in Kutaisi flows violently and it is interesting to observe it from the booth and from the observation deck located above. In this position, you will see the full landscape of Kutaisi: a cozy Georgian town on both sides of the river against the backdrop of mountains towering in the distance.

Tamara: mega positive, bright and energizing. She not only knows her city very well, but she is also a certified wine guide and an excellent culinary specialist. If you want to get a couple of free tips on the right choice of Georgian wine or the secret of making khinkali, go to it! But what is most striking about her is her love for her city. It was after her excursion that I began to treat this city differently. She knows how to tell about him in such a way that after the excursion he seems like a family.

Tamara's excursions: Kutaisi is the capital of western Georgia, Underground kingdom of Prometheus + Okatse Canyon - at the height of a bird's eye view.

And if you want real adventure, then book rafting on Rioni. Rafting in the homeland of Khvanchkara - it is not just an alloy. it unique nature, soulful company, a picnic and a short sightseeing tour.

Tours from locals are not only more interesting, but also cheaper than if ordered from Batumi or Tbilisi.

This is another of the symbols of modern, modernizing Kutaisi, just like the central square, bears the name of David the Builder. It is located 14 km from the city and you can get here by a minibus going in this direction.

The terminal building is modern, glazed, a little fancy in shape, but everything here is organized conscientiously. Very comfortable sofa-sills allow you to lie down and relax, it is much better than usual waiting rooms. A couple of shops tourist centre, information desk, Wi-Fi - what else does a vacationer or tourist need? Near the terminal there is a car park and a car rental office. The length of the runway is approximately 2.5 km.

All these transformations made it possible to assign the airport category A and international status; it is the third most important airport in Georgia. In the near future, it is planned to open new directions.

How to get to Kutaisi

There are several options.

If you live in neighboring countries, then a flight is perfect, because near the city there is a small but brand new and cozy airport Kopitnari. It opened in 2012 and is constantly being modernized. A taxi is much more expensive - 15-25 lari (5.5-9.3 $), depending on the destination.

There is an option to get to Kutaisi by train from Tbilisi, the cost of such a trip is 11 lari (4.1 $), the duration is 5.5 hours.

From Tbilisi go intercity buses, such a trip will cost 16 lari ($ 6).

The bus from Batumi runs every hour from 8 am to 6 pm. The duration of the trip is about two hours. Price - 10 lari (3.7 $)

Conclusion

Many architectural and historical monuments... And they are in the first row of its attractions. I am glad that all of them have undergone restoration and even restoration from the ruins (like the Bagrati Cathedral). In Kutaisi, there really is an opportunity to see the graceful stone-paved city and get a feel for the history by visiting its medieval monasteries.

However, the new buildings made of metal and glass are also noteworthy. They create the modern look of the city.

I would like to note the really beautiful nature around, including the fast Rioni River, which crosses the city, and picturesque forests. And Kutaisi itself looks very interesting against the background of the mountains. He, like Georgia, is small, cozy and hospitable. Wonderful impressions from your trip will last a lifetime, and you will definitely want to come back!

Attractions of Kutaisi and its surroundings on the map

When drawing up a preliminary itinerary for walks in the Georgian city, you can pre-view all the sights of Kutaisi on the map. This will help you manage your time in the most rational way and get to know the many popular tourist spots. You may also need a map with the sights of Kutaisi during your stay in the city, because plans may change.

Most of Kutaisi, located on the Colchis lowland, was covered with picturesque forests in ancient times. And now, in this fertile area, the famous Georgian tea and delicious tropical fruits are grown. We are not talking about the landscapes of the surroundings - they simply fascinate with their wonderful decoration! Greenery is present everywhere, wherever possible, not only boulevards and parks, but also squares and even small streets are decorated with bright plantings. All this beauty is in the background of the mountains, which looks just magical.

The weather in the city is "ordered" by the subtropical climate, characterized by high humidity. Heavy showers usually occur in spring and autumn, and very often. The streams of water overwhelm Rioni so much that she is forced to overflow its banks. Often, heavy rains provoke flooding, whole streets are under water. Strong winds often blow in March-May and September-November. Hurricanes happen in winter too. So, in February 1979, the wind blew with a terrible force - 49 meters per second.

But the temperature indicators in Kutaisi are quite comfortable: the average annual indicator for the city is +14.5 degrees Celsius. August is the warmest, with temperatures rising to 24.6 degrees in the last summer month with a plus sign. It happens that the thermometer shows +35 ° C and above, but this is observed only for 10-12 days throughout the summer.

The temperature record was set on July 30, 2000, when the temperature was +43.1 ° C. But the coldest day in Kutaisi in the history of meteorological observations was January 14, 1950: the thermometer stopped at around 17 degrees with a minus sign. January is generally considered the coldest of the year here, although the temperature this month is usually above zero, average temperature indicator is +5.2 ° C.

    History and modernity

The history of the main city of Western Georgia began about three and a half thousand years ago, that is, Kutaisi is 2000 years older than Tbilisi. Not every settlement can boast of such a respectable age in the country, except for the ancient Kaspi and Mtskheta.

Kutaisi, according to archaeologists, was founded approximately in the 6th-5th centuries BC. However, the chronicle of the city began to be documented only from the 3rd century BC. The first written source in which he is mentioned is "Argonautica". Apollonius of Rhodes, the author of this work, writes that “to see Eet the city of Kitean” is possible by directing the “ship Argo” to the mouth of the “Phasis stormy”, which “carries wide waters into the sea”.

In ancient times, there was a large hill on the site of the city of Kutaisi. Representatives of the first Kartvelian-speaking tribes, the Megrelo-Chans or Svans, found such a picture when they came to these lands. This area was swampy, there were many malaria mosquitoes, so it seemed practically unsuitable for life. The Svans decided to develop the foothills, setting a goal for themselves: to get to the sea coast by water. The events described took place between the 20th and 15th centuries BC. According to some reports, the first settlement was founded by the tribes where one of the main attractions of the city and its tourist business card, the Bagrat Temple, is now located.

Kutaisi, at that time it was called Kutaya, went down in history as one of the first cities in Colchis, with which the settlements of Vani, Nokalakevi and Rodopolis were adjacent. There is every reason to believe that in 720 BC the city survived the invasion of the Cimmerians. In the era of the Byzantine Empire, no significant events worthy of a chronicler's pen took place here. After the Byzantines, the kingdom of Egrisi was formed in this area. Then came the time of Arab rule, but the Abkhaz withstood the invasion of foreigners and subsequently were able to conquer all of Western Georgia from them. As a result of these events, Kutaisi became part of the Abkhazian kingdom.

The year 808 became a turning point in the history of ancient Kutaya, when the Abkhazian king Leon “built a fortress and the city of Kutaisi” and proclaimed it “the throne city, the second after Anakopia”. It remained the capital of the Abkhazian kingdom until the 13th century. King David VI Narini played an important role in the fate of the city. Although he was subordinate to the Mongols, he showed some independence. For example, in 1260 he refused to participate in the campaign against Egypt, simply fled from Tbilisi to Kutaisi. Western Georgia, which had isolated itself into a state not controlled by the Mongols, recognized him as king. And Kutaisi, accordingly, became the capital of this state. In 1293, this prominent historical figure died and found his last rest in the Gelati monastery.

In the 1760s, Kutaisi was captured by the Ottoman Empire. He was liberated from Turkish rule in 1770 by Russian troops, and in 1810 he became part of the Russian Empire... And by no means on provincial rights: in 1811 the city became the center of the Imereti region, and in 1846 - the center of the Kutaisi province. In this status, it existed until the October Revolution of 1917. After joining Russia, the territory of the settlement began to increase, it was built up with stone houses, and many churches were erected. So, in 1823, the Annunciation Cathedral appeared - it was built for the Catholic community. In 1835, construction began on the "upper synagogue".

Kutaisi even had its own prison, in which such political celebrities as Joseph Stalin and Lavrenty Beria were held as prisoners. But in the Kutaisi gymnasium, the building of which has survived to this day, it stands on Tsereteli Street, in the early 1900s young Vladimir Mayakovsky studied.

The 20s of the last century were very difficult for the city, when a series of executions of the “unreliable” affected many families. The Soviet government did not spare the "architectural remnants" of the pre-revolutionary era. Under the hot hand of the builders of communism in 1924, the Kutaisi Cathedral fell on main square- it was demolished.

In the era of "developed socialism" Kutaisi became the second most important industrial center of the Georgian SSR. The industry developed at a very fast pace, many factories were built in the city: automobile, electromechanical, tractor, lithopone and many others. The automobile plant, which was put into operation in 1951, until 1968 produced the famous for the whole Soviet Union in the Kolkhida truck. In the USSR, people even joked about this: "A car from Kutaisi is worse than a wolf or even a lynx."

The young years of the former first secretary of the Central Committee of the Republican Communist Party, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR during perestroika and the second president of independent Georgia, E.A. Shevardnadze, are also associated with the city. In 1956-1957, Eduard Amvrosievich was one of the Komsomol leaders of Kutaisi. He even studied at the Kutaisi Pedagogical Institute, from which he graduated in 1959.

With Georgia gaining independence, Kutaisi was chosen by the leaders of the criminal world. The group, known as the "Kutaisi", instilled fear in the entire Transcaucasia. She was so powerful that she could compete with the "Sukhumi". Most of the thieves in law lived in the Chomi quarter on the right bank. Some of the authorities settled at the western end of Agmashenebeli Avenue, or at the Zastava. The mansion of Gayoz Zviadadze serves as a kind of reminder of that odious era. In 2006, this criminal lair was confiscated by the state. At the same time, almost all Kutaisi thieves in law were destroyed. This means that main city Western Georgia has since become a safe place.

From 2009 to 2013, Kutaisi underwent reconstruction. The Bagrat temple was restored, several streets were repaired and opened - however, outside the city - national park Sataplia. Well, in 2012, as we noted above, it became the parliamentary capital of Georgia. In 2015, another important and long-awaited event happened: a bypass road was opened here.

    Attractions of Kutaisi

Main local temple, Bagrat's cathedral, is located on the mountain, from where a magnificent panorama of Kutaisi opens. This ancient building is interesting not only from a religious point of view, but also from a historical and architectural point of view. Only one thing saddens: at one time the cathedral suffered from the Seljuk Turks, so it has not survived to this day in its original form. but turbulent flow time still preserved for posterity ancient mosaics, paintings, frescoes and magnificent stained-glass windows that adorn the window panes. Not so long ago, restoration work was completed in the Bagrat temple. The architects tended to enrich its look with Art Nouveau solutions. Modernity was perfectly combined with ancient walls and the result obtained is worthy of attention.

Another popular attraction of Kutaisi is the Colchis Fountain, located right on the central square named after David Agmashenebeli. The fountain is multi-level and unique in that it is decorated with 30 copies of figurines dating back to the Bronze Age. The figurines are duplicates of the figurines belonging to the Colchis culture. They are enlarged, that is, they are made in natural growth, and also gilded. The originals were found during archaeological site... In addition to the fountain, there is also a drama theater on the square, city Library, Museum of Georgian Sports and many other beautiful buildings.

Special mention should be made of the Lado Meskhishvili Georgian Kutaisi Theater. Founded in 1861, two decades later it acquired its own troupe of professional actors, led by A. Lordkipanidze. The theater building was built of gray stone and is one of the most striking examples of the Renaissance style. And all thanks to arched windows located at the entrance, high columns and a facade decorated with bas-reliefs.

Kopitnari Airport, named after David Agmashenebeli, can also be considered a separate attraction. In August 2008, during the Georgian-South Ossetian armed conflict Harbour Air was fired upon by planes. As a result, the runway received some damage. In 2012, renovated and renovated, it was reopened on solemn ceremony the then President of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili was present. The airport was equipped with modern meteorological and navigation systems. Length runway is 2600 meters, and the first flight was to Kiev - it was performed by one of the airlines of Ukraine.

Not far from Kutaisi is the Gelati Monastery, which is considered one of the main in the country. The son of David the Builder buried here once removed the iron gates from the city of Ganja - they are now kept in Gelati. This monastery can be proud of the presence of an old observatory and even an entire academy. There is an assumption, which has not yet been confirmed by anything, that the legendary Queen Tamara is buried in this monastery.

At the top of the mountain, sandwiched between two gorges, there is another amazing monastery - Motsameta, from which simply magical views of the surroundings open. According to the legend, the monastery was erected in the place where the Georgian princes Constantine and David were executed, who flatly refused to forcibly convert to Islam, to which they were forced by the invaders. Both rulers were subsequently canonized. In the very center of the monastery, in the ark, the relics of David and Constantine are kept.
