We use the service - KiwiTaxi
We ordered a taxi online, paid with a card. We were greeted at the airport with a sign with our name. Drove to the hotel in a comfortable car. We have already talked about their experience in this article.

How much time to allocate for inspection of Mueang Boran

The area of the Ancient Siam Park in Bangkok is quite large. This is not for you, which we also really liked at one time, but it is not so large-scale and it will not be difficult to get around it in just an hour. To slowly walk around the entire territory of Muang Boran, sit, relax, have a bite, take pictures calmly, you need to lay at least 4 hours. Better to come for 5-6 hours, especially if you are with a company. You can even arrange a mini picnic.

We arrived at the Ancient Siam Park at 16 o'clock and literally ran around everything in order to be in time before dark. Despite the fast pace, we still had a good time, 20 times were surprised and even more admired this wonderful park, which is worth visiting for everyone who comes to Bangkok. What is it with the annoying Indians and a bunch of bred, trying to shove you a suit from "Armani". Ancient city Muang Boran is where you really should go to get a lot of positive impressions.

How to get to Muang Boran Park in Bangkok

Mueang Boran is located on the outskirts of Bangkok in the Samut Prakan area. Already in 2018, a metro will be built almost all the way to the park. But for now the nearest metro station is 15 km away. How to get to the park on your own?

There is an option to take a bus near Samrong metro station, and then change to a minibus. It is long, inconvenient and it is not clear where and what stops. Better to take a taxi.

Taxi from BTS Samrong Metro - 120 baht by meter (Grab and Uber are more expensive). The driver was told Mueang Boran (Mueang Boran, Muang Boran, Mua Bora, etc.) several times with different stress until he understood our pronunciation. Or show the name on the phone (do not show the map, the Thais do not understand it). Drive 20 minutes.

How to get back to the metro. It was already dark when we left the park. There are no taxis in the parking lot. We went to the track and stopped the first taxi we came across. The driver was told by BTS Samrong and got it right the first time. Taxi back at the counter 140 baht.

Travel budget for two: 960 baht ($ 30). If we had gone in the morning, it would have left 1660 because of the full cost of the ticket.

For example, towers on stilts for storing manuscripts were recreated, a fishing village, a floating market, a pharmacist's shop, a spinning workshop and a farmer's house were built, where buffaloes, goats, cows and other domestic animals are kept (they can be fed).

A giant fish, encircling the islet and the sanctuary located on it, is a symbol of Mount Meru, which is considered the center of the universe in Hinduism. The palace ensemble on the island is decorated with openwork wood carvings. The smooth surface of the picturesque ponds is covered with blooming lotuses. On the canals, rook boats sway, on which the kings traveled.

The Garden of Gods, located on an island in the northern part of the park, is also dedicated to the deities of Hindu mythology, which had a significant impact on the beliefs of the inhabitants of the kingdom. The sculptures of 12 gods of the pantheon are cast in bronze.

On the western section is the Pavilion of Enlightened and a fountain with water dragons. The golden figure in the center is the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of compassion in Buddhism. Duplicates of prototypes, mostly restored to their true dimensions, are marked in red. Buildings that have never existed are highlighted in blue, this is the result of a flight of imagination of the creators of the "Ancient City" in Bangkok.

How to get there

Historical and Landscape Park Muang Boran is located in Samut Prakan province, 30 km from the center of Bangkok towards Suvarnabhumi Airport. A budgetary but time-consuming way to get to the Ancient City Park-Museum is to use ground public transport. The journey may take 2 hours or more, taking into account Bangkok traffic jams. The busy Sukhumvit Trail is nearby, bus route No. 511. An air-conditioned bus passes both Khaosan Road and the Democracy Monument. The conductor needs to show the name of the park in Thai, printed or saved in a smartphone, in Thai: เมือง โบ รา, and they will tell you where to get off in order to change to the route tuk-tuk number 36, going straight to the gate of "Ancient Siam". The widespread Russified versions of "Muang Boran" or "Mueang Boran", the Thais, most likely, will not understand, in the original the name sounds like "Mumboran" with an emphasis on last syllable and a lingering "a".

The fastest way to get around the metropolitan city and its environs is skytrain. In 2017-18. The BTS SkyTrain, which starts at Mo Chit North Bus Station (green line of the Sukhumvit Line), has opened several new stations near Mueang Boran. Previously, the destination was Bearing, then Samrong, now Kheha. Taxi drivers are on duty near each of them. You can call a taxi online using the GrabTaxi mobile application.

On Saturdays and Sundays, there is the option to leave by shuttle-bus, unless the weekend coincides with national and religious holidays. The minivan picks up passengers at 11:00 from Bearing station (reference point - Esso Petrol) and drives to the Erawan Museum, from where it departs at 12:00 and follows to the "Ancient City", and at 15:00 - from Ancient Siam to the metro. From the terminal station Kheha, the car travels in only one direction - to the park, leaving at 9:30 and 14:30.

Excursions to Muang Boran from Pattaya are offered by all street agencies and hotel guides.

Located in the vicinity of Bangkok Park "Ancient City", aka Muang Boran(thai name) or Ancient siam(name in English) is unique place, which is quite capable of replacing a whole set of standard metropolitan attractions described in most guidebooks and from this have become unnecessarily noisy and crowded with tourists. This article provides information on how to get to the Ancient City - Mueang Boran - and why visiting it will be one of the highlights of your trip to Thailand.

Why visit Ancient Siam in Bangkok

What is so remarkable about the "Ancient Siam" park that for the sake of it it is quite possible to refuse to visit the magnificent Royal Palace in Bangkok, many other metropolitan temples and simply popular tourist attractions in the city? Why do the impressions of visiting Ancient City Park so long remain in your memory and make you come back there again?

For several decades, the Ancient City Park (Mueang Boran), which recently replaced official name to Ancient Siam - remains the world's largest open-air park-museum. The territory of the park is 320 hectares, and the shape of the park itself resembles the outlines of the entire Kingdom of Thailand in its modern borders. This is clearly seen on the page below. map of Ancient Siam's park high definition with an indication of all objects ( click to enlarge ).

Ancient Siam Park Map - Mueang Boran - Ansient Siam - High Resolution

It is the objects located in the park that are its main asset. Currently, their number in the park is more than 120, and the number is increasing annually, because the construction of the park, which began in 1963, is still actively ongoing, and the still free territory of Mueang Boran is able to accommodate almost as many objects as has already been built.

Looking at the map of the park, you might think that this is just another of the many miniature parks, like the Mini Siam Park in Pattaya, where the ancient temple complexes and the buildings are just many times smaller copies of the real ones. I warn you right away that this is far from the case, because the structures and temples erected in the park of Ancient Siam are made either in full size, or only slightly inferior to their originals in size. Moreover, unlike traditional miniature parks, most of the properties at Mueang Boran have meticulously reproduced interiors, i.e. temples and buildings can be viewed not only from the outside, but also from the inside.

Another advantage of the park is the opportunity to better explore the history and culture of ancient Siam. All objects in the park are placed in such a way that their location corresponds to the real geographic location a real temple in this or that part of the country or that dream where the temple was located many centuries ago. Unfortunately, many structures and ancient temples have not survived to this day, and only in the Ancient Siam park today you can admire their beauty and grandeur, because restoration work is carried out with the involvement of many experienced historians and archaeologists.

Moreover, for the construction of some of the objects, fragments of the originals are used, which were mined during archaeological excavations in Thailand. Thus, all objects of the park can be divided into three types. Firstly, these are those that were built from the original fragments transported to Mueang Boran Park and which no longer exist where they once were. These are the sights that can only be seen in this park (under the green numbers on the map).

Secondly, these are slightly reduced copies of objects, the originals of which can be found in different regions Thailand (marked in red on the map). Finally, thirdly, these are, so to speak, "mythical structures", i.e. flight of imagination of modern architects on how buildings and other buildings preserved only in legends would look like. The same category, marked in blue on the map, includes buildings that did not exist in reality, but were built using architectural styles this or that period of Ancient Siam.

As a result, after spending most of the day (and it’s better not to count on less, because the park is huge, and time runs unnoticed in it) to explore Ancient Siam, you will take a kind of excursion throughout Thailand, you will see most of the most significant temple complexes of the country and individual majestic temples from different time periods of Ancient Siam, and you will also be able to inspect many of them not only from the outside, but also from the inside (if there is enough time for this). And all this - at the price of an entrance ticket, which is more than democratic.

Ancient Siam Park: location + how to get there

As I wrote above, Mueang Boran Park is not located in Bangkok itself, but in its special Bang Na district, in Samut Prakan province. Perhaps it is this circumstance that explains the fact that on weekdays the number of foreign tourists in the park can be counted on one hand, and there are usually few local visitors. As a rule, these are Thai students who visit the park in groups as part of history lessons. But you should not be afraid of them either, since the park is huge and there is enough space for everyone. For example, during the whole day I met only one such group near the entrance to the park.

Magnificent temples on the water - a real decoration of the ancient Siam park (Ancient Siam)

Do not be afraid that the park is not in the capital itself: getting to it is no more difficult (and not more expensive) than in many urban areas, because it is only 33 km from Bangkok. The easiest way to do this is by taxi, which will cost you around 250 baht per car from the city center. When planning to visit the Ancient City Park (Ancient Siam), it is better to choose the area as a place of residence in Bangkok Suhkumvit Road, because it is not far from this longest road in the country, practically on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, that Ancient Siam Park is located.

Since I originally planned to visit the Ancient Siam Park, I stopped at, which is located literally next to the On Nut metro station of the BTS Skytrain. As a result, the taxi to the park cost me only 178 baht on the meter, and the trip took just over half an hour. Considering that I was with a friend, the fare for each was about 90 baht, i.e. less than $ 3 per person. Taxi drivers usually know the place, but you can print and show them the map below (the park is marked with a Thai sign in the lower right corner).

An even more affordable way to get to Mueang Boran is to use public transport... The required bus number 511 Pinklao - Paknam is equipped with air conditioning and stops under the same station - On Nut and goes towards the park. Landing should be done on the opposite side of the road from McDonalds and Tesco Lotus. Please note that in this place several bus stops, so look for the one where the number of the required bus is indicated on the plate. Immediately warn the conductor that you need to get to Muang Boran Park (this name is more understandable to Thais), but taking into account the fact that you need to go to the final one, you can do without it.

The rest of the way will need to be done by tuk-tuk (open pickup songthaew) # 36, which will take you directly to the park entrance. The total trip for one person will cost about $ 1, i.e. translated into, 20 baht + 10 baht. Despite the fact that the option with a bus is more budgetary, I still recommend a taxi, because it is also very inexpensive, especially if there are several people, and the option with a bus will take at least twice as much time on the road, which is better spent in the park.

The way back is done in the same way. There is a taxi rank near the park entrance, and if you don’t stay too long in the park after it closes (which is not uncommon), then it’s quite possible to find a taxi in Bangkok that will take you over the counter. For example, for me the return trip cost 195 baht. But this is due to the fact that I had to do the extra way along Sukhkumvit Road to turn to the right side of the road to the hotel, although it was possible to leave earlier and just cross the road somewhere at around 185 baht :). For reference: my friends drove from Ancient Siam Park without a meter to the center of Bangkok for 300 baht.

Useful information about Ancient Siam park

Below is information that is useful to study before visiting the park, which will allow you to more efficiently plan your time and see more than when you go to the park without preparation.

★ On the Internet, you can find information that the entrance ticket to the Mueang Boran Park is 500 baht, but this is somewhat outdated data. Currently, the entrance for foreigners is 700 baht for adults, and for children, local residents and those who officially reside in Thailand for a long time, the entrance ticket will cost 300 baht. Together with the ticket, a card is issued in the selected language (Thai or English, there may be others).

Bicycles at Mueang Boran Park (Ancient City) are included in the ticket price. In the photo there is a bicycle "for locals"

back side medals for the cost of visiting: foreigners receive a modern multi-speed bike as a means of moving around the park, while those who bought discount ticket forced to ride a classic bike that is not the first freshness.

★ Bicycle rental is included in the cost of entrance tickets, while if you wish to walk around the park on foot, bicycles can either be left in the parking lot using the issued bike locks (the main thing is not to forget the place), or they can be returned at one of the bike stations, having received a similar one at the other ( such stations are marked on the map of the park).

★ For an additional fee, you can rent electric cars of various capacities and prices. For example, a 6-seater golf cart will cost 450 baht per hour, while for the smallest electric car for two people you will have to pay three times less. Groups of people can even hire a small open type bus. The roads in the park are wide, so you can initially go around the park on electric cars, and only then visit the objects you like most while riding bicycles.

From a distance, the statue does not look large, but being close - the size is striking

★ After spending a few hours in the park, you will definitely want to quench your thirst and have a snack. The map shows the places where you can buy a cool cocktail and an inexpensive snack. The largest selection of such establishments is presented in the "Floating Market" area, located in the central part of the park. The prices are very affordable. For example, for two of us hot dishes with rice, eggs, chicken, vegetables + salad + 2 bottles of water in total cost about $ 6, i.e. about 90 baht per person. Of course, we are talking about, perhaps European dishes are more expensive.

The floating market recreated in the ancient Siam park - the best place for eating

★ Although many temples are reconstructions of the originals, a dress code must be observed when visiting the park. Those. it is better to give up short skirts, shorts and T-shirts with open shoulders and a deep neckline. By the way, more closed, but light clothing will help you protect yourself from the sultry sun. Also, do not forget about hats and sun protection creams, because even when you are far from the beaches you need to remember.

★ The hottest time of the day can be spent in one of the many gazebos, indulging in meditation, hiding in the shade from the sun and enjoying the peace and quiet. The park is really full of places where you can retire for a long time and not see either the workers or other tourists.

★ There are cages with birds, rabbits in the park, in some places you can see large monitor lizards, turtles, grazing buffaloes, deer, etc. running across the road. Reindeer can be stroked, but you need to be careful with monitor lizards.

★ For the convenience of visiting (and so as not to get lost) road signs are installed at some forks to help you find your way. Although it is better to still use the map for this, because almost all structures are unique in their own way and it is difficult to confuse them with others. In addition, there are specially installed boards with a map of the park and an indication of your current location in it.

★ It is better to take the whole day to visit the park, i.e. arrive at the park in the morning after 09:00 in the morning and leave before dark, around 17:00 in the evening. In this case, you will have time to inspect most of the park and see some of the objects not only from the outside, but also from the inside. On the Internet you can find information that the park is open from 9 am to 5 pm. But for some reason, the official map indicates that the park is open daily from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. However, remember that it gets dark early in Thailand, usually after 18:00.

★ This article contains photos of only a small part of what can be seen in Mueang Boran Park. Firstly, there are a lot of objects and I did not photograph all of them (there simply would not be enough time for this). Secondly, I only noticed when writing this article that best photos these are the ones on which I myself or a friend, so I do not publish them here. On the other hand, it guarantees that when you visit the park, it will be much more interesting for you to discover more and more new objects that have not even been seen in photographs.

★ You can observe a part of the park from a bird's eye view (and estimate its scale) using the original program, which can be accessed by following this link and turning on camera # 5 (the description of the program is available on the same page).

★ On your way to the park, you will most likely pass by the original building of the famous Erawan Museum in Thailand, but there will probably not be enough time to visit it on the same day.

★ Ancient Siam Park is not only temples and palaces, but also just very beautiful park with magnificent trees, beautifully trimmed shrubs, flower beds and original sculptures. Pay attention to the signs prohibiting visiting certain places by bike (you must leave this transport at the entrance to the territory).

Sculptural compositions and fountains on the water - the decoration of Mueang Boran Park

★ Its reservoirs give a special flavor to the park: just look at the park's map to make sure that about half of its territory is ponds and canals, with boats, bridges, fountains and statues located in the water. There is even big ship, on the deck of which you can walk.

★ Toilets in the park are located throughout the area and they are all clean, tidy and free for visitors.

★ There are cases when taxi drivers in Bangkok discouraged tourists from going to Mueang Boran, arguing that the park is closed for visits on that day. In reality, such liars should be ignored, as well as the trips they offer to other attractions in the city (and shops, of course, for bringing in which the taxi driver receives a commission).

★ Near the park entrance, close to the parking lot, there are a number of shopping places where you can buy souvenirs, children's toys, simple clothes and shoes at reasonable prices.

★ Since Ancient Siam is located next to the Sukhumvit highway, it is not difficult to get to this park from Pattaya, through which Sukhumvit Road also passes.

★ Be prepared that you won't be able to see and consider everything in one day. Therefore, plan initially: either to inspect most of the buildings only from the outside and very superficially, or to walk in the park more leisurely, carefully studying the objects and going inside most of them, initially planning to return to the park at least one more time.

I hope that the information posted in this article has convinced you that you will not regret the time spent visiting the Ancient Siam (Mueang Boran) park and soon join those travelers who, once visiting this open-air museum, will forever fall in love with this is a magnificent and incredibly interesting place, which, although not a 100% copy of the whole of Thailand, allows you to take a broader look at the culture, history and religion of this country. Construction began in the middle of the 20th century, but they are still building - somewhere they are being restored, somewhere new exhibits are being put on.

The ticket price includes the opportunity to take a bike, but I advise you to spend money and take a mini-car - there will be more pleasure. It is very easy to cope with it.
