Pingyao ancient city

Ancient city Pingyao - real museum under open air... It is the only Chinese city that has fully preserved the architecture of the Middle Ages. There are 99 museums in the city, each of which is protected by the state.

Pingyao was founded several hundred years BC during the Western Zhou era. Together with the city, a wall was built, which was rebuilt in 1370. The wall is twelve meters high and over six kilometers long. 72 observation towers were built on it, and in the wall itself there are several thousand holes intended for defensive shooting.

Pingyao clearly demonstrates the tradition of urban planning of the Han nationality: in the closed center, the central city tower and many large and not very large streets and lanes are neatly placed. 3797 courtyards survived here, of which 400 are perfectly preserved.

There are many interesting things in Pingyao, and one of its key features is that all the streets here are pedestrianized. The only vehicles permitted are bicycles and horse-drawn carts.

Bei Lin Museum - Forest of Stelae

Xi'an - the administrative center of Shanxi province - a city that served as the capital of 13 dynasties for over a thousand years. One of its main attractions is the Bei Lin Museum, created on the site of a former Confucian temple at the beginning of the 20th century. The central road leads to a huge monument, on the edges of which the sayings of Confucius and his followers are carved. Stone steles, telling about the history of China, form the basis of the museum collection, therefore the second name of the museum is the Forest of Steles.

The texts carved on the edges of the steles are the classic heritage of the Confucians and the most important historical source. To make it easier for scientists to study ancient texts, copy-copies were made from the steles, which are also kept in the museum. To obtain such a copy, specialists glue thin rice paper onto the surface of the stele and then run a swab soaked in ink over it. Gradually, the surface of the leaf turns black, while the hieroglyphs remain white. Museum visitors can see this process with their own eyes.

The exhibition pavilion presents numerous archaeological finds, zoomorphic images of the Han and Tang eras, ancient sarcophagi. The exposition also contains stone turtles, on whose shells are carved stories about the lives of the dead and the famous stone bas-reliefs of horses from the imperial tomb of the Tang era.

Also known as the Museum of Ancient Sculpture, Shuanglin Temple is located in Chiaotou Village, six kilometers from Pingyao Town. His collections contain more than 2,000 samples of sculptures made with masterly craftsmanship by artisans from different dynasties. In 1997, Shuanglin Temple was included in the list of world cultural heritage UNESCO.

The temple includes ten large and small rooms, as well as halls for reading sutras and rooms in which the monks lived. A sculpture of the goddess Kwon-yin is kept in one of the halls. She sits on a pedestal. Her right leg is bent, with her left leg she steps on a lotus leaf. In the same room is the Veda - a collection of the most ancient sacred scriptures of Hinduism in Sanskrit. This is her best specimen in China, and therefore deserves special attention from museum visitors.

Xuankong-si monastery

Xuankong-si Monastery, located 65 kilometers southeast of the Chinese city of Datong, was built in 491 on a cliff near sacred mountain Hengshan during the Northern Wei Dynasty. Translated from Chinese, the name of the monastery is translated as "Hanging Monastery".

The buildings are held on wooden piles that rest on the rock. The largest statue of the 80 statues in Xuankong-si Monastery is the relief statue of the Tathata.

Huangdi's grave

Emperor Huangdi is considered the founder of the Chinese nation. He ordered to build himself a mausoleum when he was only 13 years old.

In the work on the construction of the mausoleum, 700,000 convicts were involved, many of whom also had to leave their lives in the mound. They built in the mausoleum many palaces, pavilions with various valuable rarities and other treasures. During the excavation of the grave, a clay army of more than 6,000 horsemen (Terracotta Army), made in full size, was found. Their faces and outfits are completely different. They guarded the tomb of the emperor. Also in the caves are chariots, horses, weapons. Rivers made from mercury moved and flowed into a miniature ocean. The ceiling of the dungeon depicts the sky with stars, and on the ground - the entire earth's surface.

The body of the emperor was walled up in a crypt and placed in a dungeon, and the mountain masks the grave, which now reaches 76 meters in height. Guided tours are now held in the dungeon.
