In December 2004, Phi Phi was seriously damaged by the tsunami, at which time almost all of the island's infrastructure was destroyed.

However, the reconstruction was quick and the flow of tourists resumed again. New buildings were erected in strict compliance with building codes and the height of new hotels and other buildings was limited in order to preserve the stunning views of the island.
